Cattleya jenmanii 'Majestic' x C. percivaliana 'Summit' FCC/AOS
Hi all,
Have had this one for some years and it has been 2-3 years since it last bloomed. Then it only gave me two blooms, this time its producing 3-4 spikes and two buds on the first two spikes to mature. Here are the first two flowers of the bunch. Yesterday they were bluer, tonight they are much more pink than they were this morning. http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3758/1...81598975dc.jpg http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3696/1...a1ff67fbbe.jpg |
Such elegant flowers with classic form and lovely colors.
Thanks Bud, I am really happy with it!
That's a good looking cross! Does it smell good or did it keep the percivaliana stench?
It barely had a scent. Infact so little that I couldn't decide if it was good or bad. Kinda like toy slime they used to sell when Ghostbusters were popular with kids.
Wow that is fantastic!!!!!! I love this flower!!! Its just so perfect. Steve you're making me nervous talking about Percivaliana stench! I picked up a 'Summit' This year and its showing a spike in the sheath. Ill know for sure soon enough.
I hope yours doesnt smell bad its such a fantastic flower! I love this flower |
Don't worry, I get a kick from bad smelling flowers. A bad smell would be a perk for me.
After all, its coming from a healthy plant, that means its ok. Thanks for the comments! |
BEAUTIFUL !!!
I just Love the C.jenmanii's :) |
Gorgeous shape and colour! Did you know this cross has a name? It was registered in 1954 as C. David Sander. Strange there isn't a picture of the cross in OrchidWiz.
Gorgeous, lovely color!
Wow, thanks Silken!!! I did not know that. It would be better to name it that in my picture files. However, maybe it wasn't sold as a David Sander because it was not given a cultivar name?
In other words, how does one resolve the Majestic x Summit part? |
That's a nice cross. Too bad about C. jenmanii's fragrance not being dominant. But, on the plus side, perhaps your plant has inherited some of C. percivaliana's cold tolerance. The colors are really attractive on these.
Very pretty.

If the name isn't too long, I put the plant's registered name and the parent info in brackets on the tag. |
Absolutely gorgeous. Well done.

Thanks all for the comments. Cold tolerance is not an issue for me since I grow in my apartment.
So beautiful! Reminds me a lot of the C. trianae I saw blooming in Colombia a few years ago (trianae is the national flower of Colombia).
Yes I know, and I really want one because of that, plus its gorgeous!!
Thanks for the comments. |
It sure is! I've got a small one, I hope it'll get larger and start blooming. I saw them growing and blooming on street-planted Royal Palms in Fusagasuga, and also in Arbalaez at an elderly lady's home, she had probably about 20 different kinds of orchids she'd lovingly tended to in her garden, all local natives, and really beautiful.
Are you Colombian??????? :D
No, my partner is, and I'd been there before we met. Beautiful country and really fascinating flora.
Really, I'm Colombian, born in Cali. Haven't been back in 19 years. :(
Would love to go back for the plants and birds. |
One of our friends is from Cali (haven't been there myself yet). I hope you can get back there, so much to see and do! I loved Medellín, what a fantastic gardening climate it has, and a very nice city, with great public transportation. And, I'd really love to spend about a month at Parque Tayrona in those Ecohabs, only spent one night there because they were all reserved, so hopefully next time I can stay longer.
Loved the amazing variety of birds I saw there, too. It was nice to go to a country where everyone seemed happy. Hope to be back next year. ---------- Post added at 02:09 PM ---------- Previous post was at 02:08 PM ---------- Now that song "Cali, Cali, Cali" is going through my head! LOL |
Take any pics???
Medellin is known as the city of eternal spring. It has a very equitable climate, where temperatures (hovering around the mean temp of the earth, 57 F), and rain fall does not change through the season. I believe the closest thing to that here is San Diego??? |
Medellin does not have as low a temperature as we get in San Diego, nor as high, plus it gets a lot more rainfall, but as far as the continental US goes, that's probably the closest climate to Medellín's. I'd say parts of Maui and the Big Island in Hawaii have a climate almost identical to Medellin. Even though they're just under 5000' in elevation, they have coconut trees and other plants that cannot sustain the winter we get in San Diego (sure wish we could grow Coconuts here, we can grow Royal Palms, though, and a huge number of orchids live outdoors year-round here). I did take lots of pictures in Medellin, but I did not get to do one of the main things I wanted to do, which was go to the botanic garden (where they have that fantastic orchid collection), our time was so limited I had to choose between Parque Arvi or the botanic garden, so went to Arvi. If you get a chance to go to Medellin, take it. Great food, beautiful city, great climate and super-friendly people.

Thanks, wish I could see the pics. Always looking for pics of Colombia.
I'll see what I can find, then.
Gorgeous!
Thanks for looking and commenting Sonya!
What a beautiful cattleya! Hope you get the C. trianae!
Hi Tindomul, I'll start another Cattleya thread with the Colombia photos, it keeps giving me an error here, possibly because I did not start the thread or something.
Thats strange, alright, I'll look out for it.
Very pretty. The lip reminds me of laelia anceps in coloration, but I don't think it's in this cross.
There is flowery scent, not overpowering to me, but it is to my wife. Certainly not unpleasant.
