Warczewiczella [W.] discolor..syn. Cochleanthes [Cnths.] discolor

flower + another bud. Has an unusual fragrance, sort of minty but earthy.

Lovely flower....the colors and form is very desirable for any collection. You have a happy healthy plant looking at the roots and the leaves.

I recently picked up an amazonica, love these flowers. This one is on my wish list! Good growing!

Pretty! I had one of these once and I thought it smelled peppery

orchidsarefun 03-19-2014 11:20 AM

in bloom again. To me it definitely has a minty scent.

I am studying species that I might get next. I must say, these big roots are what make me interested in an orchid. I love the big healthy roots!

Nice looking flower and color combination! Big healthy plant.

orchidsarefun 03-23-2014 09:14 AM

definitely likes "cooler" conditions. There are a lot of new growths. I have it in a room where the minimum is 60f but where humidity is kept above 50% through an evaporative humidifier. The plant is close to the air-flow.

That's really beautiful! How big is the overall plant?

Thanks for sharing.

orchidsarefun 08-22-2014 02:34 PM

its relatively compact - 12 inches round and 12 inches from top to bottom, including pot. Each new pbulb produces 2 blooms, one on either side.
I pollinated with 2 different zygos. This has been done before using different zygos and the genus is zygozella. I can't find any photos on the internet, but I am very curious to see what they look like !

Yes, I just saw this tonight, but in the registry they have it as Zygomenzella. I looked for pics too but couldn't find any. In fact I look for quite a few of the registered Propetalum plants but couldn't find any pics! :(:(

It seems Zygo hybrids are hard to come by outside of the handful or so that are quite common. When do you expect to see results from your cross, or did you just create recently?

Thanks!

I just pollinated the blooms on 20 August, will know if it "took" in a month or so.

its hopeful that the one cross "took" - see photo. I sort of expected that because of the zzl genus that was created a while back. It's early days yet and this may still fail.
The other - with a reverse cross, didn't. That would have been a completely new genus, so not surprised.
