BLC Goldenzelle 'Lemon Schiffon' AM/AOS in bloom

I got this plant in bloom (two flowers) last November.
It grew one new lead in the spring, which did not make a sheath. I was rather disappointed but decided to give him another chance.

The second lead that grew in the late summer did produce sheath and I was all excited about it.
Well, even better, there are three big golden flowers on that lead now! :D

Just opened three days ago and smelling so sweet day and night!

Beautiful! Good thing you gave it another chance :D

I know, right? :)

Now, a new leaf on my "The Best" (large yellow with red lip) opened and guess what? There is no sheath.

I guess I will give it another chance. haha

a lot of times, when you get a new plant even when it is blooming, it will take a year or more to acclimate to its new surroundings...imagine, living happily in Hawaii, then poked in a box and shipped around the world! chances are, the next growth is still stunned and wont bloom for you, but eventually, it gets back into its cycle of growth and will bloom normally again....it is the nature of some cats to make psuedobulbs with no sheaths every other time....I don't know why that is, but I have had several like that...yours is gorgeous! I love the yellow!! good growing!

Although I try to stick strictly to minis, Lemon Chiffon was one of the very few large growing somewhat floofy catts that I liked enough to try. Unfortunately, it croaked. (Considering the space it would have taken up, perhaps that was just as well, eh?) Lovely flowers!

Beautiful! I'm impressed that you can grow a large cattleya so well indoors. Good job.

Well done.

Well, this was locally grown. lol
Anyways, I do have one from Hawaii that grew a few leads and even grew sheaths, but it is reblooming in one year!

I have one yellow mini catt and one large LC that blooms on every single lead. All others seem to skip and bloom on every other lead.

"The Best" (also locally grown) was bought in bloom and it is maturaing its first new growth under my care. It is really decent sized so I figured it would make a sheath, but no. Hopefully on the next new growth.
The flowers on The Best were quite something.
Like Goldenzelle on streroid!
Unfortunately it suffered great damage from the snails and only one out of four new eyes survived. I was so upset as it would have been amazing with all four growing!
well, I'm content with just one, better than nothing, right? ;)

Thank you!
I'm impressed myself.
I'm just glad this plant is doing well for me (three flowers)!

I love cattleyas but the size is the main issues with me.
Goldenzelle is actually not that big compared to some others that I would love to have.
Thank goodness!

Yes, I grow this along with others on a large sunny window facing south.
I use fine fish net like curtain from IKEA (a little more "coarse" than typical sheer curtain which I think would block too much light) to prevent sun burn.
So far, it has worked well apparently. ;)

Because it is south exposure, I do not get morning light. It gets sunny from about 10 or 11 till sun set.

"Lemon Chiffon" & "Tokyo" have produced some grat progeny. I'm looking forward to flowering LC.
One if you can get is Golden Canefields 'Aranbeem', really great.

No-Pro-mwa 11-20-2013 01:12 PM

Beautiful, I love the yellows with red lips.

Tindomul 12-14-2013 12:23 AM

Oh what a beauty!!!!!! Nice view from the window.

NYCorchidman 12-14-2013 11:18 AM

Thank you!

It has been in bloom for about one month.
The show is getting very close to an end.
I touched the petals and they are still quite strong but the fragrance has significantly diminished.

I wish cattleyas lasted much longer in bloom. oh, well...

ron-in-norcal 12-14-2013 01:54 PM

Wow, that is so spectacular. I need to show that picture to my other Cattleyas and explain to them that THAT is their goal!

Bayard 12-15-2013 02:14 PM

One of my favorites - good growing!

NYCorchidman 12-15-2013 04:22 PM

Thank you! :)
