It's a beautiful Russian variety that I was pleased to get from the violet barn!!! It has been a slow but steady grower, but it was worth the wait.

That's very beautiful!

Beautiful!!!

I keep telling myself I want to get a few of these, but never have yet.

I would love to get these in blue and violet.

I grew streps when I was a teenager and now quite a few years later am looking to get back into them. My favorite gisniriad, these Russian clones are unbelievable though I'm looking for a sentimental favorite, a pure violet one with a yellow throat and long arching stems. It died when I went off to college, mom just loved it to death with water. Yours is very nice.

I sowed seeds of Streptocarpus mixed colors about two weeks ago. The seeds were like dust... lol! I noticed today they have sprouted, about a hundred of them, and they are the size of the point of a pin! I can barely discern them against the micro fine perlite I mixed them with in order to sow. I just used a sanitized potting mix (microwaved one quart for two minutes) with a bit of extra perlite added as the germination media. The person from whom I purchased the seeds says I can have blooming sized plants in six to eight months if I take good care of them. We'll see about that, it just seems impossible at this point in time... lol!

That, I would be interested in trying. How are you watering the seedlings? Self-watering container?

Right now they are in the bottom of one of those clear plastic strawberry containers from the grocery store that has several air vents all around the top and the bottom. I've been keeping a piece of plastic wrap lying loosely over the top. I place a double thickness of paper towel on the bottom which come up the sides about an inch. I just use a squirt bottle to wet the paper towel from the outside right now. Once the seedlings are big enough to actually see... *grin* I'll start opening it up and spritzing with a bottle. I wish now I had made the potting mix a little bit deeper, say about two inches. I have about an inch and I don't know if that will support the seedlings until the first transplant into a compot. I hope it does.

These were the smallest seeds I have ever worked with. I'm amazed at how tiny they are. I imagine orchid seeds being just about the same.

I have a couple of these, very easy to grow and also really easy to overwater. They set pods on just about every flower. I haven't grown from seed - good luck - but I just wanted to say that they grow very quickly from leaf cuttings, seems like much faster than other gesneriads.
They bloom more often....than orchids, come in exotic colours and are small ! Everyone should have a couple.

I received my three Streptocarpus plants from the Violet Barn today. All are very healthy looking plants, though they are still small. Their cups are about a 2 fluid ounce size. I got anxious to have something a bit larger than my seedlings, which are about six weeks old now. Some of the seedlings in the second picture are still tiny, almost microscopic, but I read somewhere those should be encouraged to get a full palate of color from mixed color seeds.

very nice seedlings! Give them a month or two and they will be big enough to bloom already :)
