Pot troubles

I am having a very hard time finding a pot for my Jose Marti "Mothers Favorite". I can not seem to find a 10 inch azalea pot for it. I have even looked on line and I can't find one on there either at any of the orchid places . I really think it needs re-potted now! I will try and get some pictures up soon but I have a question. I did find some pots on Amazon one is a clay a rustic terra cotta that is very old looking it says 10" by 8' by 5". I am guessing 10 at the top 8 at the bottom and 5 deep.

My husband can drill more holes in it. I also found a pot that say's is made of polymer, stone powder and wood dust it is 12" by 4.5". It is a cool looking pot and I would think he could drill holes in this one as well. It really is not a pot but a bowl pot.

Now the orchid is in an 8.5" inch by 6". What do you guy's think would be the best one?

I'm surprised you cannot find a 10" azalea pot. I buy them regularly at the local nursery.

I'd be careful about putting it into too big a pot. I always try to increase the pot size by small amounts; but I am unfamiliar with this orchid's growth pattern.

10" round white plastic bulb pan

Have you tried this company (Quarter Acre Orchids)? This is a 10 inch bulb pan. I have placed I think 4 large orders from her for clear pots for our society and she is always great to deal with and prices are cheaper for me to ship from the U.S. than to order within Canada. Not that I can even find such selection here.

I've gotten 10" azalea pots and a 10" clay bulb pan at a local hardware chain. I've also gotten 10" orchid basket at HD.

Retail nurseries may be another possibility.

an orchid basket will be good, don't use to much potting mix, just some lava rocks and charcoal, or leca, I love the baskets.

Hi all Have you tried Charley's Greenhouse & garden Charley's Greenhouse & Garden greenhouses supplies charlies kits hobby garden accessories orchids winter green house I've bought from them before. There are no supply houses around me anymore. Except Lowes and Home Depot. And we all know where that leads too JamesL

dounoharm 11-17-2013 11:01 AM

you have gotten loads of leads for pots! I always kept my jose marti in a plastic 10" azalea pot too...they make a spectacular display! I just loved that plant! since it was in such a large pot, I always put a smaller net pot in the center of the pot while repotting...mine had to be repotted for sure every 2 years as it grew so rampantly....the cuttings were easy to root and sold very well on ebay for me...but try the net pot on the inside of yours when you pot...it helps dry out that large amount of bark you have to use....good luck, and enjoy!!

Another possibility is to use a water garden pot. They are net and come in many sizes.

I will thanks, this thing is coming out of an 8 1/2 inch pot and so I need at least an inch or inch and a half I think. I think it is just the wrong time of year and there letting there pots go down.I have checked in 2 Home Depots in 2 different towns a Lowes our local Ace Hardware, Shopko and local nursery. Nothing. I did need to go to the bigger green house in the next town but haven't made it there yet, I'll bet they will have something I should give them a call. Problem is I have to drive so far to get to these places.

Thanks, I hate to be so picky but I did kind of want a clay pot, I thought it would be better in it. But if I have to go plastic I will.

I am going to have to try more nurseries I do need to call the one about an hour from here just hadn't had time to get there. There is also ones I have never been to they are in a town a little over an hour from me. Tried Walmart, HD, K-mart, Lowes a few other ones in 2 different towns and bigger ones, towns I mean. Wyoming and Montana just don't do much in the way of plants in the winter I guess.

Do both of you mean the black ones with holes. It looks like a good idea but how would that be in the home, I don't grow in a green house. I don't have any lava rocks just bark mix.

I just can't wait till this thing blooms. It has 3 sheaths on it but they are doing nothing. Had them when I got it this summer. I am planning on either a basket in the middle or peanuts. I think it was whiterabbit that first mentioned this to me when i first got it. The basket sounds better but I will have to order this as well not sure I can find this around here at all.

I guess I'm not familiar with this pot.

I was hoping I could put up pictures but we have had to go back to our old computer and now I don't have photo-bucket on here. But I do know it needs to be re-potted as the roots are hanging out of the pot and some of the new growths are pushing against the pot.

silken 11-17-2013 12:30 PM

What about Walmart? Ours has quite a good supply of clay pots. Not sure what size they go up to but they even have clay orchid pots with holes in the sides.

JamesL 11-17-2013 12:44 PM

No-Pro-mwa I just had to google Jose Mari "Mothers Favorite" to see it Youtube Good golly Miss molly what a beautiful flower and plant...Now I see why you would like a clay pot. Sorry but you may have to wait till spring to find one.. JamesL

No-Pro-mwa 11-17-2013 01:03 PM

Yes James this thing is big and I want to leave it that way for at least now and see if I can have a beautiful display. I think if I can get to some bigger nurseries I may find one or wait till spring. The roots are really growing right now so I am thinking the time is right.

I tried the one in Sheridan which is a little under an hours drive then I tried one in Billings which is in Montana we were there last Thursday and it is 2 1/2 hour drive, no go in either one. They had orchid pots but not that big. All there pots where either to small or were standard, so to deep. I will have to go Christmas shopping so I will have to see if I can find some nurseries and they very well may have one.

Vanda lover 11-17-2013 01:07 PM

Our Walmart only gets these once in a while and not that big. Every Walmart is different, though.

FSUOrchids 11-17-2013 01:42 PM

I'm surprised they didn't have them at either HD or Lowe's. Usually between the two of those they have bigger pots.

No-Pro-mwa 11-17-2013 02:02 PM

Probably just my location. They may in the spring. They have bigger pots but I have to have it 10 inches diameter but not to deep. That's why I was looking for an azalea pot. I do like the idea of a basket but I was thinking it might be to messy for inside the house.

nlm2951 11-17-2013 04:22 PM

The wood baskets you can get in HD, and a bag of lava rocks, use for landscaping, charcoal you can use the organic one, sales in supermarkets just make sure is plain. or maybe in HD or a hardware store

No-Pro-mwa 11-20-2013 12:51 PM

Not our HD, I have never seen them there. Well there just isn't much of a call for orchid stuff here. I don't think we have allot of orchid people in this location at all. Supply and demand I guess, I can't blame them.

I will probably have to split this thing after a couple of years and then I'm guna panic for sure.

I just want to update on this thread. I finally found a big clay pot at a greenhouse in the next town. Not a big box store. After it bloomed I finally get the job done. It was not easy and I broke off 2 yes 2 new growths. Yes I was mad at myself. I had a very hard time getting all the roots untangled. Here are a few pics.

nlm2951 09-14-2014 01:42 PM

Does it have good dranage? I don't see holes on the sides, if there is none, you could open some also make sure the plant is secure, not loose.

RNCollins 09-14-2014 01:59 PM

No-Pro-mwa,

This post may be too late but Green Barn Orchid Supplies has a 10" W x 9" H clay Pot:

Rustic Clay Pot 10" w x 9" h - rough finish

It just has one big one at the bottom. I put in peanuts trying to make a cone with them. They didn't stay to well in the middle. I have a wooden stick in to check moister. And I spray the top roots about every day. It seems to be doing well so far. It has been re-potted since the first part of June. Some one said they didn't think I needed to drill holes in the sides. I am a big under waterier :blushing:

Yes I re-potted it. Thanks though I do like those pots. I needed a pot that was not to tall but wider.

It looks good to me. It has a nice root system
