Ludisia discolor

Have had this plant for 7 years growing in one of my vivariums. Not a reliable bloomer for me in those conditions, but it does manage a spike from time to time.

Oh wow! Never seen one of these in bloom, I've always seen it said that people grow these for the foliage, not the flowers. Very cute flowers actually!

Good growing!

TOMMYMIAMI 11-07-2013 07:33 PM

Awesome, thanks for sharing, I have actually 2 on the way, should be there tomorrow, love the foliage but hope to make it spiking!

WhiteRabbit 11-07-2013 08:10 PM

Nice!

Very lovely and nice work on the photos.

Always interesting what works for some folks doesn't necessarily work for others. :) Ludisia grows easily for me as a houseplant, but when I tried a cutting in my 55gal terr, it didn't survive. (On a different but related note, African violets do exceedingly well for me in terrs but die slow withering deaths as houseplants. )

Nice flower shot, Caesar!

THanks all!

Hi Paul, African Violets melt off inside my tanks, yet when I used to keep them, they did well on my windowsill. Never tried keeping Ludisia outside a terrarium. The spike on this one has already reached the top of the tank and no longer fits. The spike is about 15" tall if not 20".

Thanks Ron for commenting on the photos!

Tindomul, I actually got mine today, and posted the thread about them in vendors feedback, could you check it, I have no clue if I have near blooming size plants or blooming size, and how long it may take for them to bloom, I read this is small size orchid but I have no clue, never bough jewel orchid be4:-) Many thanks in advance!

I love mine, I grow it like a houseplant and it's currently pushing out 4 spikes. Best blooming yet. This plant rocks!

RosieC 11-08-2013 02:31 PM

Love this one and great photos.

I find this grows a bit like a weed, my one plant turned into a massive one in a big bonsai bowl as well as 5 other plants and 4 pieces currently rooting in water. I have found it a reliable bloomer on my windowledge and I've spotted the first signs of buds forming on the big plant already this year.

RandomGemini 11-08-2013 03:22 PM

What are your growing conditions for this one? I'm really thinking about it for next year... I'm done spending on plants this year, but next year I think will be the year of foliage.

I expect I will have plant shelving and lights by next winter, so window sill growing might not matter so much. LOL!

Tindomul 11-08-2013 04:04 PM

Constant moisture, at least 50% humidity, low light (no sunlight).
However, others keep it better than I under brighter and dryier conditions.

Thanks Tindomul! It's going on my list for next year for sure! I can definitely provide those conditions!

I would say don't pay a lot for one, RG. They really do grow like weeds for most folks. At my old os, members would often donate rooted plants to the society auction. Ludisia was so terribly common amongst os members that it was usually difficult to get more than a couple bucks for a multigrowth plant. (As a result, Ludisia often became a welcome gift to any meeting visitors.)

Thanks for the tip Paul! Out local OS meeting is next week and I plan to be there. Maybe I will get lucky? :)

I was noticing that sometimes kudus is discolor costs a lot from certain places, but it seems like lots of people have them. Maybe I can get my hands on a one from someone locally. I would like that, a plant already acclimated to our conditions would be so nice!

Also, please ignore my autocorrect fails.

Ludisia discolor. I can spell it. My iPhone can't. LOL!

Good growing!

I hate when books and websites say they have insignificant flowers. I love mini flowers they are totally cute.

So agreed Kevin, mini tiny flowers are off the hook, and when macro pics are made, they look stunning, just check the lepanthopsis pictures, such a cute blooms!

When mine was on a windowsill, it grew like a weed and always bloomed at Christmas. Now that I've given it "better" conditions in the greenhouse, it looks worse and hardly ever flowers ... I think Ludisia was my 2nd orchid.

There are some really wild-looking Ludisia clones in the market over the last few years, even one that's (lightly) fragrant.

Not an outstanding plant, but the best photos I have ever seen of its flowers.

quiltergal 11-09-2013 02:10 PM

Mine is sending out 5 spikes. Mine seems to thrive on neglect. I often forget to water it. I had it in my office for 22 years and never repotted it. When I retired a year or so ago I brought it home and repotted in the same pot. It's getting very bright light from the window and 50%RH on a good day. http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/11/10/he8y7uhu.jpg

22 Years Awesome I love a plant with history. I hope it never dies

yoliejr 01-01-2014 10:39 PM

getting ready to build a terrarium and i'm glad i saw this...i agree it's funny on what works for some people. i will try my ludisias in my tank...

theroc1217 01-02-2014 12:38 AM

When you repot it, try a wide shallow pot. Mine is in the base of a large plastic pot that I cut off, about 10 inches across and 2 inches deep.

ok...currently i have 1 in a 5" terracotta as test (slow growing) and another baby ludisia in 3" plastic pot -- since it's really cold here (NYC) should i wait to do the repot?

theroc1217 01-02-2014 01:06 PM

I would repot after they finish spiking, unless they haven't put out any buds.
