Growing on grape wood, this is a faithful bloomer. Loretta is my Mother's friend who took me under her wing and gave me my first gardening lessons when I was a kid.

It's endangered in the wild, yes. It's legal to own unless you pulled it out of the jungle. I'm assuming this plant is probably a mericlone.

tucker85 09-11-2013 10:13 AM

Very nice!

Love the colour and the photo!

I love it! When you say faithful bloomer, do you mean annually or does it bloom more than once a year?

Vanda coerulea has been produced from seed as well.

Different genetic lines are now on the market. This species is not going extinct unless people stop producing them.

slc 09-11-2013 01:17 PM

Beautiful! I just received a seedling plant. It'll be quite a few years before mine looks anywhere near as nice, but your plant gives me hope for the future. ^_^

TOMMYMIAMI 09-11-2013 02:31 PM

Stunning!

Bud 09-11-2013 02:41 PM

Gorgeous specimen!
The roots and leaves tells us it is happy and healthy.
To think that it is mounted in cork says about high humidity in the grow zone.
I have the wild variety I got from Thailand(on my album) and this variety(but not the Loretta var=just the regular kind) that I got a lot of heat when I posted it two years ago....blasted its spike this blooming season because of the heat....oh well maybe this cooler months it might spike again.

WhiteRabbit 09-11-2013 09:47 PM

Gorgeous! A very happy plant!

I got a V coerulea a few months ago, hope I can keep mine half as happy!

Like others said, V. coerulea is pretty easily obtained through modern methods of propagation. From what I understand this species was brought to the brink of extinction shortly after 1900 in Europe when greenhouses were filled with wild collected plants.

Just once a year in mid to late summer.

This plant came from Andy's Orchids in California in 2007. They use a lot of grape wood because it's more easily obtained and sustainable than cork. In the humid climate of Miami, grape wood attracts fungus but this one has done well, I suppose because it has a long drying period in winter and most of the roots are aerial.

Bud, I love the wild form. The more exaggerated the lateral sepals the better. Please post pics when she blooms! For those with new plants, you should get flowers soon. Mine bloomed the second year I had it on a small plant. It's hard to describe how pretty they are in real life.

Many pet supply stores sell grape wood in the reptile section.

Gthumbz89 09-15-2013 12:52 PM

That is one of the nicest coerulea I have seen. The color is enchanting. Nice root mass as well. I always go gaga when I see a healthy mass of roots on a plant!!! Nicely done. :bowing

You're all very nice, so thank you! I love a good mass of roots, too. Another very nice quality about coerulea is that the flowers are long-lived, about a month in my conditions, a quality it passes onto its many offspring.
