Wow, wonderful pics Tindomul!

You certainly know your Warblers. Good shooting! You have a good steady hand.
|
Wonderful photos! The warblers are such cute little birds.

Awesome! Great photos!

Thanks all for the kind comments, looks like pics for two species didn't come out as planned so I just edited the first post now. Now you can see the Yellow Warbler and the Black-throated Blue Warbler (to balance out the yellows).
|
Wow~ Amazing!
They are all so cute too! I especially love the Yellow-throated Warbler and the all yellow one. looks kind of like a canary. How come I don't ever see anything other than pigeons and common sparrows? :p I thought Warbler was that shiny black birds with some brightly colored spots all over on them. They usually hang out on the lawn everywhere in the city. didn't realize there are so many different kinds of warblers. So neat!!! Speaking of birding, I'm not a bird watcher but I do like them. Last Saturday afternoon, I was having a picnic with a friend in a neighborhood community garden. I saw this red cardinal bird flying around, eventually landed on the lawn. It was chasing after a big green bug. a few tag and run, then finally caught the bug while both were flying in the air about one foot above the lawn. It all happened in just a few seconds but I was in awe! I wish I could have it recorded. ---------- Post added 07-28-2013 at 12:05 AM ---------- Previous post was 07-27-2013 at 11:59 PM ---------- Ok, I was way off. I just remembered that those common black birds that I thought were warblers are actually European Starling. lol |
Thanks NYCOrchidman. Central Park is really great place to see the birds. The Warblers are not uncommon in late April through late May. After that you get just a few species that breed in NYC. Then they come back from Sept to Oct. After that they head to South America and don't return till April.
Cardinals are probably our brightest coloured bird that sticks around all year. The shiny black birds with spots are European Starlings. Introduced to Central Park from Europe because someone came up the dumb idea of filling Central Park with all the birds mentioned in the works of Shakespear. That also included pigeons and house sparrows (aka English Sparrows). These birds displace our natives. |
How amazing those cute little delicate looking birds can fly all the way down to South America!!!
Where do they go during the summer time then? I go to Central Park everyweek but haven't seen any of them. lol Is there any good spot where certain birds like to hang out, or do you just have to spend hours and be lucky to see so many different birds?? I find sparrows cute but I absolutely hate pigeons. They poop everywhere! I wish there was a way to selectively get rid of them all!!!! So Cardinals are residents here? I have only seen them twice so far and they both happened this year. lol I have to say they are beautiful!!! |
There is a ton of Cardinals here in Queens, I'm sure they are all over Central Park.
Like I said before, if you want to see Warblers you got to go during the spring or fall migration. And early in the morning is good. They are small birds (usually smaller than the sparrows) and can be easily missed, but trust me, when the time is right, they will be oozing from the trees. If you want to see them, hit the park in May and ask the first person you see with binoculars. Just tell them you've never seen a warbler and want to know where to see some. Most birder's are awesome people. Best place in Central Park is the Ramble. |
The first time I saw a Cardinal was in Central Park near the Boat House in early summer.
The second time, last weekend, was in Midtown west. Each time, it was just one male, but I like it of course. Thank you for the tip! |
I miss cardinals. We used to live in one of their main nesting areas in Ontario. There aren't any here, but we do get warblers of various kinds, mainly in the fall and spring, but there are a few around now.
|
Well with all this talk of cardinals I minus well share some photos of cardinal I took.

Fantastic! That makes me miss them even more.

Nice!
Is it legal to catch wild birds Cardinal and grow as pets? ;) Maybe I should just get a red canary, which I don't think I have seen anywhere yet. I only see yellow and orange colored ones. |
That would be very illegal, you are not supposed to own even a feather of any native bird species.
Which I suppose leaves starlings, sparrows and pigeons as fare game. |
Oh, I see. lol
By the way, I read some stuff about Starlings and their negative impact on other birds and agriculture. It sounds quite serious. What a tough group of birds though! Do you travel far to see certain birds? I have a friend who used to be a birder, and he used to travel to Southern Arizona to see birds. How many birds have you seen so far? This is the question many birders ask, right? :) and any particular birds you like? |
I don't travel farther than Eastern Long Island or upstate NY to see birds, but ofcourse if I happen to be traveling anyway, then I usually pack my binoculars.
My favourite bird is the Scarlet Tanager. Makes cardinals look brown. http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7373/8...8c3f0a92c6.jpg Scarlet Tanager Orange variant by tindomul1of9, on Flickr http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7322/8...50670c9545.jpg Scarlet Tanager by tindomul1of9, on Flickr This year I have seen 230 different species of birds in NY and 249 in NY in my entire life (only been birding 3 years). My world wide list is 378. |
They really are gorgeous birds. Here we have Western tanagers. Unfortunately I've only seen them during the winter when their plumage is dull. In summer they flame yellow to red.
|
Wow~ it sounds like you had a jackpot this year! lol

Fabulous photos, Tindo. I am extremely jealous.
|
Great. These birds apparently love the gardens and parks. You knocked my socks off.
|
Wonderful pics!
|
Thanks all!
|
Great job capturing the gorgeous warblers in photos. A bird with a beautiful song is like an orchid with a wonderful scent--good looking with a bonus.
|
I was in Brooklyn Botanical Garden two weeks ago and I spotted one of those birds.
I can't quite tell which one exactly, but it was very small, had the white halo around the eyes, and the greenish belly. very cute!!! :) |
See, now you believe me, they do come through!
|
It was definitely a great experience after seeing so many pigeons and sparrows. :)
|
Here is my latest migrant, a Blue-Headed Vireo. This is a type of Vireo, not a Warbler, but just as interesting!

That is a great photo!
I like how you captured the bird with something in its beak. |
Thanks!!
