Rescue Zygo - Spike!

I'm not usually one to show every spike, growth, new root etc. With 90 orchids you and would soon get board if I posted them all ;)

But this is an exception. Back in January 2010 the zygo I had not long bought rotted off all growth and by April all the roots were gone too. I asked on OB for help here and I want to thank everyone who helped.
http://www.orchidboard.com/community...save-chid.html

I was about to trash it when I spotted a tiny tiny growth, and I decided to give it a reprieve... so now 3 years later a spike is the reward at long last :cheer:

It's NOT been an easy road though, the first growth rotted off, then the 2nd and 3rd matured to tiny tiny p-bulbs (one the size of a pea, the other about the size of a runner bean seed) and each of those rotted off as the next growth started. Then last spring a growth started that resulted in a 5cm (2") p-bulb, then in the autumn another new growth which grew over the winter and matured this spring into a 10cm (4") p-bulb just as another new growth was starting. That latest growth looks like it will be bigger than the last, it's still growing, and it has grown very fast... and today I noticed a spike on it!!!

I'm soooo glad that in the early years when the growths kept rotting off again that I didn't give up

Here's the spike! (To the right of the large growth).

Will do, just hope it doesn't decide to bloom and be done with it while I'm away... only just thought of that. Oh well, it's still really thrilling to have brought it this far.

No, I grow it on the window-ledge it's pictured on. It is the brightest side of the house. Outside at ground floor level I have the plants that get full direct sun from about 10am - 7pm (at this time of year). This is on the same wall, but higher (gets the light slightly earlier) and it's behind the net curtain you see in the pic and the pane of glass. So it get's pretty bright light but sheltered by the curtain and the glass. I had picked a dull moment to take the pic as previously the light had been too bright to get an shot without moving it.

Wow! Congratulations Rosie! I can't wait to see the blooms! (my fingers are crossed for you, so you don't miss it when it's blooming!)

....wonder if you could put a web-cam on it when u are gone? (I would have no clue as to how to do this, and be able to watch while I'm gone, but you seem MUCH more proficient at computer skills than I! :coverlaugh:)

Polarizeme 07-27-2013 11:12 PM

Exciting!! I can't wait to see the pretty blooms

Ghosthunt64 07-28-2013 12:12 AM

Good job! I suspect it's going to be extremely satisfying when it does.

Good idea, but to be honest while I work programming computer systems I've never actually used a webcam :blushing:

azredsand 07-29-2013 08:14 AM

Congratulations Rosie!!! On this rescue did you grow it the traditional semi-hyrdo way how Ray does, or in a container with leca as the medium . Please let me know. Thanks

RosieC 07-29-2013 10:40 AM

It's not plain leca, but I don't use pots like Ray's method either.

I use a standard pot, with a cache pot around it. I then keep a reservoir of water in the bottom of the cache pot, covering the bottom layers of the leca.

I water my flushing water through, tipping away the water in the cache pot and then refilling the resevoir.

It works on the same principle's as Ray's S/H and keeps the leca always wet in the same way, but I don't do it in quite the same way, because I find the pots with holes in the sides don't work well for me when I have to pick them up to take them to the sink (the water spills out the sides as I carry it).

So, did it bloom while you were away? (or have you even gotten back yet? ;) ...or not even left? Lol, or just decided to stay on vacation... Lol, that happens from time to time...)

bethmarie 08-08-2013 07:28 AM

NYCorchidman 08-09-2013 11:55 PM
