Phal. equestris 'B#100'

This one was in my last Big Leaf order. It had a tiny spike started and has finally opened all it's flowers. The color is much more saturated than the photo shows. I'm very pleased with it.

So pretty...can I ask what B#100 means?

quiltergal 07-16-2013 07:40 PM

'B#100' is the clonal name. I forget which Asian grower this came from, but the color was so unusual and intense for equestris that they decided to make clones. It has been used extensively in breeding.

Beautiful!!

It's also a 4n, i.e. tetraploid, if I recall correctly.

What CJ & Cody refer to as "crapaloid"? I thought I remembered reading somewhere that it had been used quite a bit in breeding. Maybe not....

No, "crapaloid" is 3n, this is a tetraploid, 4n. :) I think, experts, correct me of I'm wrong, but a "crapaloid" can also be a 5n (or a 1n, too, if that's possible... I feel like it is, tho). It's when they have an extra set, it makes them sterile in some/most cases, etc.

Thanks for the clarification!

A beauty!

quiltergal 12-13-2013 11:02 AM

Thanks Tin! Tiny as it is she's sending up a new spike already. :) It's maybe a few weeks from flowering.
