Looking for a Black Maudiae paph.
Hi everyone. I am looking at expanding my horizons to more paps and am wanting to get some unique ones. The one that I am looking for right now is a black maudiae. I know there isnt a true black but some of them have come on the doorstep. Do you guys know of any black maudiae type orchids for sale on the web?

Something precisely like this one... maybe just a hair less white.

I do not claim rights to this picture... I am simply using it for an example

Macabre hybrids can be quite dark.
Also, Petula's Flame have some really dark ones, I think your picture is just like one of them I have seen. So you are looking for paphs with white dorsal and black petals, not vini. I love vini, but also am on the lookout for nice macabre or something similar. |
No such thing as true black anyway.
|
That is a true black beauty! I love dark coloured orchids, especially paphiopedilum vinocolor, they're my favorite of all paphs. But I can't still find them for sale here. Can you tell me some of the prices of the paphiopedilums? :)

Here you have a link to roth x maudiae cross that might be of interest; Roth-Maud

I like Paph. barbatum for a dark paph. See here: Paphiopedilum barbatum

do you guys think that these would be good?
Paph Macabre Contrasts Ladyslipper Orchid Blooming Size Great Color | eBay Paph Memoria Barbara Duncan A New Hybrid Aiming for Almost Black Color | eBay if you guys think that these would be good plants which would you go for? |
Both would be very easy to grow. In googling, it seemed like Paph. Macabre Contrasts was more likely to have darker colors. Some Paph. Memoria Barbara Duncan turned out less black. These are seed raised hybrids and will have genetic variety.
If you really like black orchids, check this one out: http://www.orchidboard.com/community...l-fcc-aos.html I'd like to get one of these sometime, they get big and blooming sized ones are expensive. Some people don't like them because they have dormancy and then don't grow or bloom for a few months, I love deciduous orchids for some reason. Besides, they grow extra fast when they do grow and if you damage a leaf, it'll get new leaves next year! |

LOL... im trying to stay on the ground a bit. I would be scared to have a deciduous orchid because i would probably kill it lol. I have an obsession with black flowers though. The color black in flowers has alluded plant breeders for years. A black flower is truly a rare treasure.

I have seen some very dark Maudiae types with Springwater Orchids at the local shows. I think Krull-Smith has some dark ones too.
I was just gifted a Macabre x. phillipensis var. roebellini in high bud. The buds got broken off on the way back :c, so I opened the advanced one to get an idea what it would have looked like. The petals were BLACK. Dorsal was striped and pouch lighter, though. |
If you want to make sure you are getting what you want, you have to buy paphs in bloom unless you buy divisions.
The variability is just too high with seed grown paphs. Some look so different that one wouldn't think they are from the same parents at all! lol If you are looking for black orchids, not just paphs, there was a recent thread on it with some nice example pictures of nice black flowers. |

When I am shopping for any kind of flowers, whether is an orchids or spring blooming bulbs, summer blooming bulbs, I want to have the darkest of all. For example, this spring I had 100 black tulips (Queen of night) which I bought them in the fall and planted them in my garden. That was amazing view, I can say. Also, now, I am expecting for my calla lily "Black Beauty" to bloom :) Black is, after all, a gem in the plant kingdom ;) :haveagreatday: |
