Kinkujaku, Asahiden, Kinkosei

Kinkujaku, a bean leaf that is supposed to have tiger stripe. I look fwd to it growing under my lights for a while to see how much stripe there really is. May be hard to see but the root tip is ruby, too.

Asahiden, hard to say what variegation this is... Not quite marginal not tiger. But I guess its more marginall variegation than tiger!

Kinkosei, this guy is in kind of rough shape... Damaged leaves and such. But it makes sense once you see he box it showed up in. Dr Glenn did a good job packing these guys but the USPS did an awesome job of stomping on the box.
http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/05/02/y9usejy4.jpghttp://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/05/02/my7yzu3e.jpg

This is the box...AFTER I re shaped it a little. http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/05/02/ade5upeg.jpg
Even though it was sent priority USPS, this box spent a week in Detroit before it finally came this way. The plants seem ok thank goodness, but why did the USPS use my box as punching bag? Lol.

Also, this is my tiger stripe I got a month ago... Its color has gotten awesome since under my lights. Love it!

This is my Tom bean leaf... Quay and I both think its just getting use to my conditions but come on dude... Stop dropping leaves! It is growing new leaves and roots so I'm not concerned but it is irritating. It lost some pretty leaves!

http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/05/02/uqytyzeg.jpg
Group photos.EVERYONE SQUEEZE IN! Lots of new growth so that's awesome. Still have to figure out how I'm going to give them a cool period come this winter.

And lastly some eye candy... Not neos but in the Vanda family... My first success blooming of these large Vanda types:

Ugh! That reminds me why I avoid USPS Priority like the plague. A while back I had a compot from Hawaii that tracking showed arrived in TX within a couple days, where it was carefully aged for about a week before making it here to Philly after just short of 10 days. Of course the weakened seedlings all eventually succumbed. The dealer had offered me a refund if I refused the late delivery, but I decided to take a chance on them.

I now always do 2-day fedex only (and in rare cases 1-day fedex) and I divert each shipment to a nearby fedex center where I am able to pick them up first thing in the morning (rather than having them kick around on the fedex truck all day).

Love the Neos and great job blooming the vandas. You and the handful of others here that have been posting Neo pics lately have really been stoking my new fascination with these little gems. I only have the 3 I picked up at SEPOS so far, but I have a Neo Kara Nishiki enroute from orchidweb to pickup at fedex tomorrow. Next I guess I need to look into adding a bean leaf.

Bud 05-02-2013 02:45 PM

WOW! you have quite an expensive haul there.....
My favorite is that ruby tip tiger striped bean Neo kinkujaku=I am drooling....you managed to capture a couple of striping on the leaf.
post separate threads of each Vanda in bloom to focus on their names and descriptions.

WhiteRabbit 05-02-2013 05:31 PM

Beautiful plants!

Wow! Have you spoken to someone at the post office about what happened?

Good job on the Vandas! They're beautiful!

I wish I could but I can't always tell sellers what to use. I prefer FedEx, too, though admittedly, I have had bad experiences with them all. I live in the country (not like isolation but

Thank you! These neos have a way of getting into you and forcing you to collect them! I'm shocked I got the vanda to bloom... they like things "just so" it seems, in order to be happy. I'm a HUGE fan bean leaf neos... I shouldn't be because they're more difficult to bloom and I love the blooms too... but who cares, they're great in and out of bloom.

It was a pretty pricey haul. Blew through the plant budget for sure. The tiger stripe beaner is gonna be awesome. And ruby root tips to boot!

I'll post the vandas in the vanda forum but I didn't have time to do it yet-- I want to get good pics of them.

Sonya, i have not. It won't do any good and would just stress me out. The USPS is just so completely indifferent to people these days. Our post office in particular is very dysfunctional. There is one man that works there that I won't even work with, he's that bad. For instance, the moment you step up to his desk he'll yell, "Well hurry up we haven't got all day!". I swear he has a mental disorder but I just won't work with him. It's really that bad. And he does that to everyone... it's embarrassing for him and my fellow Coloradans.

Thanks, re the Vandas... the flowers look a little goofy... like the colors are muddled together... but I think since its my first time blooming it in my condition, it needs some more time to "settle" in. The blooms it had when I got it were very clearly laced, white and blue.

Ryan, please send the photo of your Kinkosei and the box to Dr. Lehr. I'm sure he will help you out.

I've never had any issues with USPS Priority Mail either sending or receiving packages. *knocking on wood* I would suggest that you have packages marked "hold for pick up" if you're having problems.

I'm getting a Neo pot from Dr. Lehr. Hope it makes it in one piece...

Adrienne, maybe I should... but i dunno... i hate inconveniencing people. What could he do?

coffeecup 05-02-2013 10:48 PM

That collection of yours is growing! Addicting, isn't it? Unfortunately I got a box very much like yours via 2 Day Fed Ex. You just can't predict how badly each company will destroy your boxes unfortunately.

The tracking seems to show that the package was insured, so there might be some course of action there, but then again dealing with the USPS bureaucracy might be enough to make one go postal, so to speak. :)

They will want to keep the contents of the box and the plants will pull through so I don't think I'd pursue it.

Thanks!!! Yes they are addictive.

Red Orchid 05-03-2013 04:53 PM

You got a great haul of Neos I am green. :) I totally understand your reluctance to pursue action with USPS. I think the same way unless something is totally destroyed. However, Jayfar makes a good point just think about it. :)

I emailed Dr Glenn just as an FYI. I gave him credit for packing the plants well and doing everything right-- but wanted him to know. I'm keeping the plants regardless so no way am I using the insurance on it because the plants in general will come out fine-- they're just a little battered for now.

In fact... the bean leaf has a spike... crazy!

Red Orchid 05-03-2013 09:04 PM

Oh that is fantastic what a relief! Your orchids are lovely really healthy and so many of them all at once. :) what a joy! Did they ship to you quickly? I have never ordered from Dr Glenn.

Glenn is typically a very fast shipper. I've always gotten things from him in two to three days in great shape.

I did buy pretty fast actually. I probably should have been more selective in my choices. Actually I take that back...I love them all.

They are all good choices we kind of know what we are looking for when it comes to Neos. I can buy them easier than a dress because I am always studying pics of them and their names. Enjoy your new Neos. I have been online all night at New World and Orchids Limited.:D obsession nice but still an obsession.

Thanks! Yeah I've have found that growing my chids, especially my phals, in a mounted fashion is my preference but I love sh. So I adapted the two and this is what I got. My sogo Vivien variegated (my most white one) loves it! It's a slow grow but it is a happy plant!

Pilot 05-07-2013 11:10 AM

So I contacted Dr Glenn at the suggestion of those here to let him know of the sad state the box was in when it arrived. I told him I didn't hold him responsible at all and in fact he did a great job of packing the plants but the USPS stomped on the box! One of the three plants sustained damage but I think it'll be fine. It's lost a few leaves but it looks like that's stopped now.

Anyway, Glenn was super nice and displayed awesome customer service. Seriously nice guy. He ended up sending me a plant to take the edge off the bad shipping experience. He sent a Suruga Fukiran. Totally didn't need to nor was it ever expected but wow what an incredible gesture! I'll forever think of Dr Glenn and his generosity every time I see the plant!

Glenn's Surugas are the best I've seen. I have one from him too! He is quite generous as well. He has even sent me a plant on my birthday! Funny enough I just got an order from him a couple days ago...but I'm too embarrassed to post new acquisitions yet again!
