Guarianthe aurantiaca syn Cattleya auratiaca

This orchid was recently moved to the group Guarianthe, commonly known as the Orange Cattleya. This is endemic to Mexico, El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala; a zone that is very humid with abundant rainfall, therefore the plant does not like to be dry for long periods of time but will succomb to root rot if overwatered. These are small to medium plants, my plant reached 15 inches on its longest cane. I guess I got the tall form.
For culture and care, I give this plant intermediate to cool growing, yet this can also tolerate warmer temperatures with the aid of good air circulation. I give it bright shaded light during its growing period and dry winter rest with cool night temperatures to induce flowers; it can tolerate down to 50F at night….what I mean by ‘dry winter rest’ is reduced watering but do not completely deprive it with water ….(I water it twice a week in the summer but only once a week in winter) I have a humidifier with oscillating electric fan in the day and automatically shuts off at night….
Weekly weakly fertilizer added with seaweed mix and worm tea mix.

all my windows can still accomodate 10 to 20 pots and the hanging hooks can still fit maybe 50 mini....

its a matter of getting the right tier and arrange them in such a way that it doesnt clutter; pretty much like cataloguing in a library

post pictures if your Cattleya blooms....

CR7cristiano 02-20-2013 05:19 AM

Most of your orchids are miniature right? See the prob with me n my french windows, my Catts are monsters alrdy n still young plants. I also have specimen size ones too -__-. Space runs out quick!

Bud 03-09-2013 06:52 PM

I have few large specimens Cattleyas and Dendrobiums, large Vandas hanging on wires....and majority are miniatures=three tables on each window with tierred metal racks .....I still can accomodate 20 to 40 more medium orchids in pots and hanging....but from now on; I have to put everything inside my bedroom to be locked if I have a party....I got seven of my miniatures stolen last time I had a party

What the hell?! Who the heck do you invite to your parties?!
Sorry to hear that though. I would kill someone, for sure!
Especially since I have some rare ones.
P.s. I finally was able to get my hands on a C. Warscewiczii!!! A lovely lady from Louisiana offered me a division from her specimen size plant' a rather generous division too!
I'm going to be in Boca Raton in a cpl weeks and I will collect it then. I'm super excited; been dying for this one. I'm making sure to pick up my import license because i'm not risking them taking it away if they decide to look in my suitcase! :blushing:

Bud 03-09-2013 07:50 PM

do not put it in your suitcase....get a large cigarette paper bag or a wine paper bag (the ones you get from customs gift shops at the airport) they do not inspect those as you come through inspections....nochalantly carry it draped with a jacket or a coat

You sound like you've done it before!
That actually is a good idea. :)
