The Duck thread
No, not for eating.
But this year I have seen my fair share of ducks and I'de like to share the wildest ones yet. Harlequin Ducks, these are sea ducks. Picture taken at Point Lookout beach NY, just a mile away from Jones Beach. http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8374/8...45e03697d6.jpg Harlequin Ducks by tindomul1of9, on Flickr ---------- Post added at 09:24 PM ---------- Previous post was at 09:18 PM ---------- Here are some of the common ducks of the area, From left to right, Ring-Necked Duck, Gadwall, Red-head duck, American Wigeon http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8049/8...a32dd4ca36.jpg Redhead, Ring-necked Duck, American Wigeon, Gadwall by tindomul1of9, on Flickr |
Great duck photos! It's nice to see 4 different kinds in one photo on the 2nd one!
|
its not yet spring yet the ducks are back ....then, we are going to have an early spring....
|
Well, these are winter ducks. So no, I think spring is still a ways to go.
|
All the geese have flown past my house for the north already.
Well most of them What lovely ducks. Such strikkg patterns |
Thanks!
I have actually seen 25 species of ducks since the new year. The only ducks around that I have not seen are Wood Duck, Surf Scoter, King Eider and there are 1 or two Barrow's Goldeneye. In fact, I would have gotten the Barrows and the Woodduck together had I arrived the location where I missed them only 20 minutes earlier. :(( Am hoping to get the Blue Winged teals in the summer or fall along with the Wood ducks. here is my full duck list 1 Gadwall Oakland Lake US-NY 08 Jan 2013 2 Eurasian Wigeon Massapequa Preserve US-NY 10 Jan 2013 3 American Wigeon Hermon Macneil Park US-NY 09 Jan 2013 4 American Black Duck Jones Beach US-NY 05 Jan 2013 5 Mallard Point Lookout US-NY 05 Jan 2013 6 Northern Shoveler Jones Beach US-NY 05 Jan 2013 7 Northern Pintail Jamiaca Bay US-NY 11 Jan 2013 8 Green-winged Teal Oakland Lake US-NY 08 Jan 2013 9 Canvasback Assi Plaza, Flushing River US-NY 07 Jan 2013 10 Redhead Saint Johns Pond Sanctuary US-NY 15 Jan 2013 11 Ring-necked Duck Alley Pond Park--Restoration Pond US-NY 11 Jan 2013 12 Tufted Duck Saint Johns Pond Sanctuary US-NY 15 Jan 2013 13 Greater Scaup Jones Beach US-NY 10 Jan 2013 14 Lesser Scaup Flushing Meadows Park US-NY 07 Jan 2013 15 Common Eider Point Lookout US-NY 05 Jan 2013 16 Harlequin Duck Jones Beach US-NY 10 Jan 2013 17 White-winged Scoter Point Lookout US-NY 05 Jan 2013 18 Black Scoter Point Lookout US-NY 05 Jan 2013 19 Long-tailed Duck Point Lookout US-NY 05 Jan 2013 22 Bufflehead Jones Beach US-NY 05 Jan 2013 21 Common Goldeneye Jamiaca Bay US-NY 15 Jan 2013 22 Hooded Merganser Flushing Meadows Park US-NY 07 Jan 2013 23 Common Merganser Flushing Meadows Park US-NY 15 Jan 2013 24 Red-breasted Merganser Point Lookout US-NY 05 Jan 2013 25 Ruddy Duck Jamiaca Bay US-NY 05 Jan 2013 |
I came here thinking it is about eating duck! lol
I love mallard, the male birds, though. That velvety green head... I do like the blue feathers on the females toward the rear of their bodies. |
The Duck Dynasty thread? :)
Their is a canal behind the houses across the street from me. All's I ever get is the Mascobe ducks and the mess they leave. P U My Mother in law chase's them with a stick when she see them. but they come right back.;) |
Beautiful photos, Tindo. The Harlequins are my favorites. We see them here about this time of the year.
|
Thanks Ron!
My favourite ducks are the Ruddy Ducks. Even though they are very common, I love the blue bills, and compact size. Well, you know me and miniatures. Maybe thats some kind of syndrome, maybe I ought to get that analyzed  http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7240/7...20c4c51e04.jpg Ruddy Duck by tindomul1of9, on Flickr ---------- Post added at 04:20 PM ---------- Previous post was at 04:18 PM ---------- These are pretty cool too! http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8027/7...6ac2eb851a.jpg Canvasback by tindomul1of9, on Flickr |

Thanks! Was hoping more people would have some duck pics too.
|
My little sister is obsessed with ducks and would love this thread. I'm going to show it to her when I get home, she'll love to see what a wood duck actually looks like! :)

Got some nice shots of a Northern Shoveler and found an unexpected Common Merganser, finally some more descent shots of a Mallard. http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8232/8...3cb6ef70b3.jpg Northern Shoveler by tindomul1of9, on Flickr http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8097/8...6ba98e9259.jpg Common Merganser? by tindomul1of9, on Flickr http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8108/8...18c13b3f81.jpg Mallard Duck by tindomul1of9, on Flickr |
Great pics Tindo. Here the most common are Malards, but we do get some others as well. I have a picture of something else at home I'll have to post it so maybe you will know what it is :)
|
Thanks Rosie, can't wait to see your pics.

I thought I had a closer up picture of the male of these, but can't find it. No idea what it is. |
Those are really pretty, Mandarin Ducks?

Sorry for the late reply, have been busy working and when not working, birding.

Wow! Great photos! I love those Ruddy Ducks! (I love miniature things myself... Kinda obsessive! Lol, funny thing, my dad, is exactly the same way! He is a little more obsessive tho... U should see my parents house... Lots of tiny little things all over the place! Lol)
I love the Buffleheads, Hooded Merganser, and the Long-Tailed Ducks too! They r soo pretty! Those wood ducks (remember correctly?) have such great patterns! I like the up-close pic, I wouldn't have noticed those dots/spots on their chest otherwise, & the coloring on their heads & beaks! Wow! :) great stuff! Thanks Tindo! |
THanks for the great comments Mary!

Hi all, Time to revive this thread. I know Ducks are associated with spring for most people. However, for birders the depths of winter are the best times to go see as many ducks as you can get.
Here are some ducks I've been able to photograph. Wood Duck, http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2825/1...8ba910d329.jpg http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3681/1...3e3d2107ea.jpg http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3699/1...aea4929696.jpg A small female Northern Pintail http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2876/1...24bfc09fec.jpg Redhead and Wood Duck in the back http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7322/1...9cc8933080.jpg Green-winged Teal http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3822/1...6a48d27d86.jpg Bald Pate, or American Wigeon http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2867/1...88db8e1e7a.jpg Canvasback http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3815/1...e75f962a02.jpg Common Mergansers http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5547/1...5225ac5a31.jpg Ring-Necked Duck http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7323/1...6c4f8291ee.jpg http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3727/1...c63b73bf4d.jpg http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2846/1...6efc636421.jpg Northern Shovelers http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3682/1...01c04c5a16.jpg Hooded Merganser http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2838/1...e8a6cd3c53.jpg Long-tailed Duck http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2821/1...4452f87957.jpg Bufflehead http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3796/1...68bc154395.jpg Common and King Eider (King is the second from the bottom) http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3812/1...b65889a8e3.jpg Common Eiders http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3749/1...faf39f2f9a.jpg http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2812/1...6fef8b358e.jpg Surf Scoters! http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5543/1...72bfb1c290.jpg http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5495/1...3ddcf91b7c.jpg A bad pic of a Harlequin Duck http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3693/1...8acf5427fb.jpg Common Goldeneye, again another bad pic http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7332/1...1ed973bd58.jpg |
I had no idea there were so many pretty ducks. Thanks for showing them.
|
My pleasure, all the pics were taken in the NYC area.
|
Is the duck at Café Boulud good?
|
Never been there. But I do love eating duck.

I watched Duckumentary on Netflix the other night.
I loved it!!! I think most of the ducks photographed here were on it. One thing I particularly liked was how the just hatched ducklings of Wood Duck would jump out the tall tree and land on the ground without being injured. Amazing nature! |
Yea, I love that duckumentary too. That jumping out the tree, thats amazing. I would never make it as a duck.
|
The Duck thread
Years ago a pair of wood ducks nested in the cavity of a tree just a small distance from the front door of our house. They were rather shy and in order to get a glimpse of them I had to be very quiet and make no sudden moves. I never could figure out just why they nested here as the closest water is a small lake at the end of the street about 1/4 mile away. The tree with the cavity is still here but I have never again seen the wood ducks. :(
Beverly A. |
That sounds pretty typical wood duck behaviour. They don't like to nest close to the water.
|
Hi all,
Some half way decent Harlequin Duck pictures, http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3778/1...ab197be8fd.jpg http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3763/1...8ffe26e694.jpg http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3736/1...fd2f0e3e27.jpg |
I had seared foie gras appetizer (I don't remember if they explicitly said it was duck, but goose foie gras is much rarer so it probably was), and although I prefer the terrine de foie gras, it was still very, very good.
