Hello from Oregon USA

I stumbled across the forum and thought it might be a nice place to learn more about my addiction.

you know....

shhhhhh

Orchids! :blushing:

Yes, I am an Orchiaddict. They say the first step to recovery is admitting the problem.... or something like that.

Well, I suppose I'll get on to reading and asking question.

:welcome: Polarizeme...Don't worry ,you've come to the right place. It's a very safe space here..there will be no ratting out here once you start buying more orchds and "hiding them around the house from the detractors" They know who they are  When my hubby asks "is that a new orchid?" I usually reply that I'm bringing it out to get more light to help it bloom faster..Heh Heh

Polarizeme 02-02-2013 11:52 PM

Lecent! that's too funny. I'll have to use that one

Welcome from another Oregonian! :waving

Polarizeme 02-03-2013 01:12 PM

Hello quiltergal! What types of orchids have you had the most success with here?

quiltergal 02-06-2013 09:32 PM

I've successfully grown and bloomed most genre. I have limited space so I'm currently only growing species Phals, a mix of species & hybrid Paphs, and hybrid Phrags. I have sold off all my Catts and other plants.

Polarizeme 02-06-2013 11:13 PM

I am currently growing Phals and Ocidium. I just ordered in a Dracula that I am really excited about. I figured they would do well with the cooler weather here.
I am also growing a few species of Hoya. I am pretty fond of the flowers and the long hanging vines of these.

Hello and welcome?!

I think the Dracula should fair nice in your cooler environment, but be warned that they tend to like high humidity levels for the most part (generalization of 80 to 90%RH) in addition the coolness. Also, be sure to keep it out of light. Just like Dracula, these plants will exhibit leaf burn if exposed to too much light, lol...

Thank you!
I was considering building an enclosed cabinet of sorts with plexiglass. That would help with the humidity. Believe it or not, in the valley here in Oregon the humidity is relatively low!
I haven't quite sketched out the whole environment, but I do know I want to have a small fan to help circulate air inside the growing area. If this works out, I want to build a small shade house to put them in outdoors.
We'll see how it shakes out.

Great link Ron; do you have any pics of the case being constructed?
