Hi all--

I've kept orchids pretty unsuccessfully off and on for a number of years--wish I'd found this site sooner!

I've gotten interested in the use of orchids in vivariums/paludariums (and actually have a few growing successfully in those settings, probably due to dumb luck rather than knowing what on earth I'm doing), as well as windowsill culture, and realize there's more to learn than I ever realized. Thanks in advance for putting up with my "dumb newbie" questions--I suspect I will have a lot of them!

Thanks! I'm at that state right now where there's so much I don't know I'm not even sure where to start--and orchid books are not the most commonly available things (or the most up to date) either....

Welcome to a great place to how to care for your orchids, when I joined I had 1000s of question about them, but learned how every one is willing to help out and I don't think any question is silly or dumb, we all come here to learn more

Yeah I agree - books are great, but they can't answer YOUR question, only ones that they foresee and write about.
This Board is great - lots of very knowledgeable growers, and lots of friendly people in general - it seems that many orchid growers (myself included) love to work with and talk about orchids with anyone at any time. Feel free to ask any question - the only dumb or silly one is one you DON'T ask when you should; often it will cost you.

Always happy to have more enthusiasts on here. You'll find you will always learn something new with orchids, especially if you get into the habit of falling in love with plants you didn't know existed before someone put a picture up! :rofl:

I get the feeling you people are going to be bad influences and only help feed my addiction--glad I found you!

Luckily you don't have to meet anyone in a back alley or make phone calls using "code" in order to get a fix!!!! LOL. Yeah - the board is not exactly using a Betty Ford Addiction Center approach, more of a "if a few make you feel better, maybe a few more will make you feel GREAT"! sort of path to recovery; as a Social Worker we would call this technique "flooding" - overdoing something to make the person sick of it; it DOES NOT work with orchids.
But you have to remember, you are mingling with a bunch of unabashed orchid addicts - you think we are going help you find a cure? Sorry - hate to open your eyes to the real world, but there is no known cure for this particular habit. You will only find support for your weakness as we encourage you to feed your craving more and more!!
Go get another orchid then come back and post some more.

P.S. - not only are orchid addictive, but I have found that addiction also spreads to the Orchid Board. I find my morning coffee tastes better while I am reading the new posts. Then Lunch always calls for another "hit", and Supper is always washed down with a visit.
Actually this is a great place for someone like me to connect with others - I am somewhat home-bound and when not here I am sitting with my mother who is very ill. The Board allows me a distraction from some of the issues I am dealing with right now.
Hope you find the same release here as I have - it's a very civilized, very friendly place to relax and talk to others who know more than I - and perhaps share some of what I have picked up in all the years and with all money I have thrown at this "addiction". Enjoyed your post!

Hi Steve--Thanks for the post! Yes, you people are definitely BAD influences (grin)--sort of like going shopping with a best friend who says "the shoes look great on you, you should get them in every color."

It was bad enough when I just looked at the orchid info, but then I scrolled to the humor section and spent far too many late nights giggling away over the posts. I think I'm going to like it here....
