Great Finds of the week!!!
3 Attachment(s)
Trader Joe's had cymbidiums and poinsettias exclusively for a while, but now they started to place their mixed orchids in order I guess.
The NOID red Miltoniopsis was hard to pass. The clear marking of the mask and its overall solid color just caught my attention. It had some white scratches on the flower surface (I posted the best looking flowers here but there are a number of spikes on this plant), but it was the only one and for the price, I didn't care much. The flowers are a bit smaller than the average miltoniopsis. No fragrance... I think without these white blemish on the flowers, this one would be a winner for me! The second one is also NOID. It has some odontoglossom shape to the flowers. The plant isn't that big, which is nice, but the leaves are rather ugly. Again, I just brought it for a bargain price. This dark spotted white flowers look so nice in the light as in the last picture. |
Both of them are beautiful!
I envy you guys that find stuff like this in your local nurseries. I'm struggling to find anything else than NOID phals, unless I'm able to get stuff in from South Africa. |
Ooooh beautiful colours - love them!! :D

You do get very lucky sometimes, hence I diligently search everytime I go grocery shopping! hahaha ---------- Post added at 03:21 PM ---------- Previous post was at 03:20 PM ---------- Quote:

I'm jealous too, don't get orchids at all in our grocery stores and the best we get in the nurseries are NOID phals. There is one nursery near me that sometimes gets New Guinea dends and nice catts on consignment but they are pricey.
|
The only orchids I can find around me are the NOID phals at home depot (unless I drive like an hour to Brighton for Mahoneys... my mom would NEVER.
|
We just have the noID phals around here, too. :(
|
Just beautiful
|
ohhhh I'm going to have to go check out my TJs and see what they might have now. Great haul!
|
Great finds! I love the solid red milt and the colorful onc!
I've found masdies, a white complex paph, nobile dens, and milts at my local TJs. Better selection than my local nurseries, and better prices too! The second plant looks awfully similar to my Burr. Castle Issa 'Hilo Bay'. But unfortunately with a NOID you can never be 100% sure of an ID because different hybrids may have similar flowers. |

New Guinea dends and catts are great too! :) You pay more and probably the quality is much better. ---------- Post added at 08:44 PM ---------- Previous post was at 08:40 PM ---------- Quote:
I still have one. It is of high quality, grows and blooms reliably, look healthy. Now the phals they carry look so bad. Flower shapes and conditions are just aweful!!! It's a shame. I now buy phals from a flower district or any flower shop where I find what I like. ---------- Post added at 08:45 PM ---------- Previous post was at 08:44 PM ---------- Quote:
Plant quality is still an issue, especially with intergenerics, but with such low price, can't complain. ---------- Post added at 08:50 PM ---------- Previous post was at 08:45 PM ---------- Quote:
Many NOIDs are easy to tell what they are even without tags. You CAN be sure 100%. Many hybrids show quite a bit of variability within the grex, or look very similar to other hybrids making identification very difficult. Many are quite easy to tell, for example, Oncidium Golden Girl, Wildcat, and many intergenerics. |
Really lovely finds!
|
Yes, gotta love TJs!!! hahaha
I have to admit that it's my new addiction. There were tons of intergenerics at TJs today. I almost bought them all but only brought one Tiger Crow Golden Girl with four spikes!!! That's what I call great bargain. :) |
