Dendrobium Mingle's Sapphire

(victoria-reginae x gonzalesii)

This has been in bloom constantly since February :)
It's an easy keeper, but does like it's water and a sunny window (mine is in a west facing window that is shaded in late afternoon).

I tried on three different days to take pictures - never did get any I'm very happy with, but I guess you all get the idea ;) - there are three spikes clustered near each other, and the blooms facing whichever way they can!

Thanks for looking :)

Lovely color and very well grown (as always).

lostonthebeach 11-05-2012 11:25 AM

Very Nice.

Thanks everyone :) this is very much due for fresh media, but I haven't wanted to disturb it ehile blooming :p Will need to pretty soon ...

Is this one a cool-grower like the Den. victoriae-reginae? I'm pretty sure that the unairconditioned nyc summers were the killing blow to my attempts of growing that species...

The gonzalesii parent (a warm grower IOSPE PHOTOS) reportedly makes this hybrid temperature tolerant, excepting extreme heat or cold.

I know, isn't that annoying when you can't get good pictures of beautiful bloom?

nice color by the way! does gonzalesii bestow ever-flowering characteristic as well?

It sure is!

Thanks - yes, this one has been constantly blooming since February - it only bloomed for the first time early in '10, didn't bloom again til a year later, but bloomed a few times last year, and this year has not been without blooms :) It has two more spikes coming along at the moment. I'm going to have to break down and repot it before too much longer :p

I got mine from Clackamas Orchids Clackamas-Orchids Acineta to Staurochilus - but don't see it available now :(

NYCorchidman 11-07-2012 08:48 PM

Oh, well, I'll be on the lookout in the future. Thank you!

By the way, how do you grow this plant? light and all that.

Hope you can find one. I'm kind of surprised this isn't more readily available ...

Keep media lightly moist, moderate to moderately bright light - mine's in a west facing window that is shaded in late afternoon, - it may be able to take more light, but blooms fine for me where it is. No winter rest of any kind for this.

NYCorchidman 11-07-2012 09:21 PM

Great! thanks! :)

I really like the unusual color (faded jeans) and the clusters of flowers. I would consider trying to find one if it were a smaller growing plant.

I don't know how big these get - mine's fairly young, tho third year blooming, but it's not really big

You're doing something right with this den, Sonya.

Thanks :) This has been an easy grower and bloomer for me :) The oldest blooms from this pic have started to wither, but there's another spike that just began blooming, and another with buds developing :)
