One of those large Cattleya flowers that you have to see live to appreciate. More than seven inches in diameter….The rich vivid color and the contrast of the venation in the lip are just breathtaking! It is a strong grower and flowers twice per year. I got this blooming sized plant from Kawamoto orchids a couple of years ago in bud and since then it provided me with gorgeous blooms.
It is in an east facing window by the kitchen. This orchid prefers night-time temperatures to be between 55° F – 65° F. Daytime temperatures can easily reach the low 90’s without a problem. Humidifier and a small oscillating electric fan….watering once or twice a week under normal conditions…..water more when it is hotter in the growing environment. Fertilizer weekly weakly alternating with seaweed mix and worm tea mix….
Potting is done every two years as you see new roots starting to emerge from the newest pseudoblulb(s.) I use a mixture of 4 parts coconut husk chips, 2 parts #4 Perlite, and 1 part Hydroton. Also I like clay pots as they will dry out a bit faster keeping the roots from staying too wet.

Thank You, Paula !

Thank You, cbuchman !

WhiteRabbit 09-11-2012 07:39 PM

beautiful!

I think someone copied the name incorrectly along the way (I do have some of those myself) as RHS does have it as Lawless Walküre (easy to see how that could happen in this instance)

Carpe Diem 09-11-2012 10:02 PM

Beautiful Flower and color!
As for the "Walkuere" - Wagner comes to mind. :)

A Umlaut can also be formed by adding the letter "e" to the a, o or u. That's the way it was spelled before they came up with the idea for the dots above the letters. It does get confusing.

Thank You, Sonya !

Thank You, Carpe Diem !

That's a beautiful dark lavender! The flower is flawless. I'm impressed that you get it to bloom twice a year. Good growing.

Bud 09-17-2012 03:33 PM

Thank You, Jeff !

This is a large fragrant and colorful flower....I was lucky to have chosen it from several freebies I got....It has also grown into a clump added seven pseudobulbs through the years.

Junebug 09-17-2012 08:53 PM

Bud 09-17-2012 10:36 PM

GardenTheater 09-17-2012 11:56 PM

Wow! Those blooms are gorgeous! When I see something similar at orchid shows I swoon.:D

Bud 09-18-2012 01:12 AM

Thank You, Garden Theater !!!!

Other people dont like the large frou-frou Cattleya....all ruffled and ostentatious....but since nature engineered them to attract pollinators; it is for this reason that I have come to like them, frou-frou and all....

RosieC 09-19-2012 02:22 AM

Gorgeous flowers Bud, love the colour, so rich.

Eddie Oates 09-19-2012 09:21 AM

I like everything about this bloom. Beautifully grown and well presented.

I bought this plant from the same vendor last summer. They have great plants and I bought a few cattleyas from them.

Anyways, mine was dark magenta all throughout. yours has interesting color combination.
The flower was really really big and super fragrant without strong spicy kick. I loved it.
The flowers had some streaks on them and I thought they were virused, so I dumped the plant out. lol

didn't realize it is a twice a year bloomer. I'd like to get one as I see kawamoto still sell these.
I recently got magenta colored catt and it's about to bloom, so I will have to decide which one I'd rather keep. :)

Bud 09-20-2012 03:01 PM

You have a bad habit of throwing orchids away =give them to me instead, LOL....test them first(thats the only way to know if its virused)....this flower is also dark magenta, but I photographed it in bright sunlight(I should photograph in overcast skies to really capture the true colors)
its a great hybrid and might bloom for you more than twice a year depends on the new leads it produces

NYCorchidman 09-20-2012 06:54 PM

I just don't have enough space, so sometimes some plants leave. lol
Yeah, kawamoto says most of the hybrids they sell are "supposed" to be constant bloomer off every new lead.
I have susan fender 'cinnamon stick' that I got from them. it came with one bud, which I loved! it's been growing very very well, but no flowers ever since. not even a sheath! It's getting too big for me and it won't bloom.
Would you take it from me?? Or I can divide the plant in half and share one with you and I keep the other half?

Bud 09-20-2012 09:46 PM

YEEEEY! goody ! I want it, I want it !

NYCorchidman 09-21-2012 01:21 AM

I repotted cinnamon stick last winter, so the media is still good. It's just that the plant is adding new leads fast and all those gangly roots spreading everywhere outside the pot...I think I will repot them before the end of this year.
I will make an incision on the rhizome so by the time I repot, it will be easier to divide the plant.
It currently has about 13 pbs including all the little pbs.

Would you take my Cymbidiumv Little Black Sambo too?
This one you can get tomorrow if you'd like. hehe
I don't hate it. It grows well for me, it's just that it's getting big for me. It is maturing its new growth.
Let me know~

Bud 09-21-2012 02:23 PM

Oh, a friend of mine who is a costume designer, she loves Shakesppeare thing in central park!
Anyways, well, I'm a nightowl usually, so just let me know. I also carry unlimited ride MTA card, so I can get closer to you, probably easier for you to carry the plant home that way too.

Alright, enjoy the busy week and let me know when you are free next week. I'll be taking good care of the cym till then. :D

Bud 09-24-2012 01:47 AM

@flexdc....the southfacing livingroom window is warmer than the east facing kitchen window and the bathroom window is of lower temperature than the other two....my cool growing masdies and the miniature lepanthes are in the darker cooler bedroom window....the warmest and brightest is outside in the fire escape in the summer, where the vandas are=then goes indoors in the southfacing window in the winter with an electric heater and a supplementary extra electric light in the day

Bud 11-02-2013 02:22 AM

REBLOOM = Fall 2013 (11/01/2013)

This orchid plant gave me bigger flowers this time and with sharp vivid colors. I also noticed that the petals have more frou-frou than the last time. The fragrance is still the same bubble gum scent.

Thank You for your kind encouragements!

Its merely luck=not dedication....I happen to live in an apartment with large windows, temperature controlled and strategically positioned fire escape(that my landlord and the fire department have not yet discovered full of plants in the summer). I travel on tour because of my job=so I usually leave my orchids for 7 to 10 days and I am just glad they don't conk out on me yet....
