Masdie haul
6 Attachment(s)
Introducing my first masdies. :) This is also one of my bad habits in action - instead of buying just one to see how I get on, I now own five. They are as follows in the pics with a group shot at the end:
glandulosa prodigiosa ignea coccinea var alba amabilis 'red' Any comments on plant condition etc. will be very welcome. I have never even seen a masdie in person before so can't really judge what 'shape' they are in. To my untrained eye the ignea looks a little sparse, but it does have new growths appearing. |
All of them may be over potted. Un-pot them all and check to see how large their root systems really are. I'm willing to bet the root mass is only 1/8 to 1/4 the size of the pots they're in right now.

Thanks for the advice king - I'll take a look at them when I get home this evening.

Nice haul and they all look just perfect!
Looking forward to see the blooms pictures. |

Update!
Another 'two years later' update. :D
These masdies were all doing fine outside in their plastic pots, but this year I decided to repot them in early spring into home-made baskets using capillary matting and spagnum moss. The result was an explosion of growth and a first flowering on the ignea and coccinea. I couldn't capture the colour of the red/orange on the ignea properly unfortunately. https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-8...o/DPP_0008.JPG https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-E...o/DPP_0002.JPG https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-3...o/DPP_0007.JPG https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-P...o/DPP_0015.JPG |
They are beautiful!! Thanks for the update

Bravo!

OMG!! Wow, great haul and flash forward (instantly for me) amazing results. Can we see the type of potting you are using. Thanks for sharing.

Flash forward nearly another 2 years, and here Masdevallia coccinea is again. She did bloom in 2015, but I did not take pictures (to my shame). Recently repotted out of the home-made baskets made from capillary matting because, unfortunately, the plant stand they were in started to rust quite badly. They're now all in basalt clay pots.

Wonderful blooms. I almost got my ignea to bloom but they both blasted on me. I still struggle with them.

I just started putting some of my masdies in pellets (some with a dab of s.moss) then in a clay pot sitting in rain water. You can tell when it's wet by the color of the pellets. I fill the saucer up even more than the picture shows. Now the clay pot looks wet and the pellets are more wet looking than the picture. But you get the idea. It's sort of a reverse Kool-Log. Seems to be working so far. Time will tell.

Great update. Your blooms are spectacular! I hope I can grow mine the same way once they start arriving.
