Chihuly Glass

Chihuly just opened a new exhibition in Seattle a few months ago and my wife and I went for our anniversary. We were not acquainted with his work and went because someone else told us. We were not disappointed! I don't know if others have seen his work, but it is often found in botanical gardens, though this is not. This is entitled Garden and Glass, but has gardens specially planted for the exhibition. If you're interested take a look. This photo is my wife's but there are many more at the link below the photo:

Very nice show.
I am one of those guilty of not being fully informed about glass....I drilled vases to plant some of my orchids.
I usually visit my grandmother in Boston and ask for her old vases to use as orchid pots for S/H....
I just discovered I drilled holes on several expensive crystals and art works like Costa Boda, wedgewood, Lalique and such....I must learn what those name brands stand for and from now on I will ask my grandma if they are the expensive heirloom glasswares....she nonchalantly gives them to me out of love assuming I know what they are worth....I am just ignorant about crystals I can hit myself

Thanks, Judi, and thanks, too, for the anniversary wishes. She's still the light of my life. And, Bud, I am impressed by your ability to destroy works of art without realizing what you are doing.

Love his work. I do stained glass work which cannot rival his work at all. He studied here in Wisconsin about an hour from where I live. A friend of our family introduced his work to my MIL and she in turn introduced it to me. I love his imagination!!!! Congrats on you anniversary and on still being in love with your wife.

Ron, I became a fan of Dale Chihuly when I saw a show about the Pilchuck Studio on cable TV at least 20 years ago. Saw our first show a few years later in Dallas, then a couple of exhibits here in Little Rock. There's also a chandelier installed here in the Clinton Presidential Center. I wish I had some pieces, but all I could afford (I think) is several books; two of them have Chihuly acrylic squiggles on the linen covers.

Ron, congrats on your anniversary. May you enjoy many many more.

Love the Chihuly pics. I volunteer at Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park in Grand Rapids, MI. They have done 2 Chihuly shows there and have a few of his works as part of their permanent installations. Admit that I am a fan.

Wow! Looks fabulous!

Thanks, all of you, for the kind comments and good wishes. We're at 37 years (I was 21 and she 18) and still going strong after eight kids and 14 grandkids (14th on the way). I'm a little surprised that so many people have commented. Didn't know if I should even post this. It's so far removed from anything to do with orchids.

Congratulations on your anniversary...I am an only child so I envy your children and your big happy family on holidays....

ronaldhanko 07-25-2012 05:08 AM

We don't seen enough of them, Bud. They are scattered from Edmonton to Northern Ireland.

I showed my MIL your photos and she is in love all over again. I wanted to ask if the float boats were actually in water?

dounoharm 07-25-2012 10:39 AM

Thanks for commenting, Jonada. They were not in water. They were part of the indoor exhibit and were on mirrored surfaces.

Thanks, my friend, for commenting, and you are right that half the pleasure was seeing it together (and taking pictures together). Just returned from another excursion, orchid hunting and sight-seeing and both of us took a lot of pictures. Now we get to loo9k at them together and compare them.

Congrats on the anniversary. Pittsburgh's Phipps conservatory had a glass show but I am not certain who the artist was...I was far too busy looking at the plants and seeing if it was something I have. Artwork among plants is usually invisible to me, even though I love visiting art museums. My spouse doesn't see the plants so probably noticed the glass.
Again, congrats on the anniversay. Eight kids and fourteen grandchildren must really make the holidays a joy!

Leafmite 07-25-2012 10:52 PM

Sorry you don't see them as often as you'd like. Our kids probably won't live nearby either once they leave college. The orchids are my plan to cope with the empty nest.

ronaldhanko 07-25-2012 10:57 PM

I love orchids, but grandkids (an the kids) are better.

Leafmite 07-25-2012 11:25 PM

No, the orchids don't measure up to my children but I hope they will help me cope with having to let the kids go off into the world. Parenthood has been so much fun and it is very hard letting them go. The oldest will be starting another year of college soon, a few hours away from home.

Amen. True words.
