Bulb. dearei 'Matt'

The flowers on this Bulbophyllum are so unusual and complex that they are beautiful. I got this plant from the late Wilbur Chang.

This is lovely. I have a bulbo -just the one, but I think that I am definitely going to have to add to my collection now.

Plant and blooms are wonderful. I really like the color too.

Mel - That has got to be one of the nicest Bulb. dearei's that I have ever seen. The color is incredible. Wilbur really knew his Bulbos, he will be terribly missed in the orchid world.

Very cool and great color!

This varietal received an AM in 2003 in Vermont. It somehow found its way into Wilbur's collection. Fortunately for many of us on the island, Wilbur brought many of his blooming divisions to society meetings where he sold them at a very reasonable price. This was one that I picked up from him. Almost all the bulbophyllums that I have came from him. He was a good friend and mentor who I sorely miss.

what's the best medium for bulbo lobbii types? i just got into growing them.

Tschimm 02-26-2015 04:48 AM

That depends like always on your conditions.
I got it in a shallow pot in sphagnum from the nurseries but you also could use bark if you water more frequently.
I mounted it on a treefern totem and water nearly every day.

Most of my Bulbos including lobbii types are grown in plastic pots with New Zealand sphagnum moss as the media. I find that they grow best in a damp media under shady conditions.
