Still got some blooms to go but so far so good.

Gage 06-14-2012 02:33 PM

Stunning red! This is one of my absolute favorite Oncidium alliance hybrids. I also love the fragrance!

Susie11 06-14-2012 02:43 PM

Thank you Gage. This one is being rather stingy with the fragrance. I can't smell it yet but then that could be because of my sinuses being blocked :D

WhiteRabbit 06-14-2012 07:00 PM

Beautiful! I too just love this one!

silken 06-14-2012 11:34 PM

That's a lovely display! Mine is just finishing its bloom. I think the scent will develop in a few days if it hasn't already. I find it a bit strong!

What do you have yours potted in? It looks happy!

Bud 06-14-2012 11:40 PM

Lovely flowers....the colors are just captivating and you still have five to six buds yet to open....very nice photography and you presented your plant well with the white clean porcelain touch....the plant is happy and healthy by the looks of the bulb and foliage

camille1585 06-15-2012 04:55 AM

Beautiful!! It's also one of my favorite Onc types, and I love the fragrance. Like Silken I also find it a bit strong sometimes, it really takes over the entire room. Give yours time, the scent takes about a week to develop entirely.

Susie11 06-15-2012 06:18 AM

Thanks for the kind comments everyone :) I thought that I must have done something wrong since I couldn't detect a fragrance although this morning the oldest one is smelling faintly of something rather pleasing. Hopefully it will become stronger as time goes on.

Leafmite 06-15-2012 10:09 AM

This one is a winner! I couldn't believe my good fortune when I found one at a show this spring! Beauty, fragrance, ease of growing, long-lasting blooms, and blooms more than once per year! What a perfect orchid!
Your Nelly Isler already is looking beautiful! In a few days, the smell will be divine!

Susie11 06-15-2012 10:21 AM

Oooh I can't wait for the smell to explode out into my front room..... I do love this plant too :D

RosieC 06-25-2012 10:45 AM

I love this one, but struggling to grow it. One of mine is looking like it's picking up again at the moment (new growth), they seem to like me in the summer but not the winter so I've got to find the winter 'happy spot'.

Susie11 06-25-2012 11:22 AM

Well mine gets south east /west light all year and it has done really well. I don't heat that room in the winter as I can't afford to, and I actually fed it too much. I grow in sphag and I didn't know until last week that you are supposed to flush more often and fert less in sphag!! I was feeding every watering and flushing on the fourth!! But no harm done. It seems happy enough. I have just counted four new growths and I have only had it a year so maybe it liked being force fed?

Judi 06-25-2012 08:33 PM

I just got one for my birthday last Friday--so far it doesn't have a fragrance, but the blooms just started opening. I was very pleasantly surprised as my favorite nursery has had a very poor selection of orchids lately. My daughter-in-law found it at the grocery store of all places. It is a real beauty and now I can't wait for the fragrance to develop!

Susie11 06-26-2012 01:03 PM

It took a while for the fragrance to develop on mine. Now though, about a week after the first blooms have opened I can really smell it and it smells good!! I love walking past it and sticking my nose right on top of the petals to get a heavy dose! I can mainly smell it in the morning and sometimes I can even get a whiff of it when I am in the next room. It is lovely. I wonder if anyone has ever made a perfume from it?

kevin1217 06-26-2012 02:57 PM

Love the color! I need one now!

So it sounds like yours gets quite a bit of light and quite a cool winter? Do you keep your sphag moist or allow it to dry out between watering?

Mine's growing but could do better. It seems to really like being hung out under a tree in the summer. I guess it gets nice breezes and doesn't get as warm as in the greenhouse on hot days.

Susie11 06-27-2012 01:57 PM

I let the sphag become dry-ish about for an inch down then I water. I do the finger test, I stick my finger onto the medium and if it comes back with moisture on it then I don't water, if it comes back without any water / moisture then I water. It works for me but I doubt that it is recommended practice.

Leafmite 06-27-2012 02:46 PM

Mine is actually going to bloom again and it is putting out new growths. It is truly a great orchid.

Susie11 06-27-2012 03:35 PM

I have three new growths on the go so hopefully if I am lucky they will bloom maybe at the end of the year or more likely early next year. I can't wait for that display.

Thanks for the tips. mine bloomed this year and last year and has a few new growths, but some of the leaves are crinkly and I just think it could do better!

Susie11 06-27-2012 05:18 PM

I have a few crinkly leaves. I think it is due to lack of water or lack of humidity.

Susie11 07-05-2012 10:01 AM

Almost there, just two left to go...

Gage 07-05-2012 10:36 AM

Very nice spike! I just brought mine inside to the kitchen window. It was NOT enjoying the heat and rains, so maybe after it recovers from the heat in the comfort of the a/c it will thank me with a nice spike like yours! I should clarify that even with the a/c running our apartment stays between 50-65% relative humidity, but goes up in the winter since we don't have to run the a/c as much.

silken 07-05-2012 10:43 AM

Very nice presentation of the blooms on that spike. Mine tend to misbehave a bit when in bloom.

Susie11 07-05-2012 10:55 AM

Thanks guys. Unfortunately being in the south east facing window all of the time the flowers right in the sun have faded and bleached out a bit but the scent still remains the same. Oh well three new growths are still going strong. I hope this will soon be an even nicer plant next time round.

Rowangreen 07-11-2012 05:48 AM

I think my Nelly has a spike! Can't quite believe it, as though I have a few oncid types it's the first time I've seen a spike at this early stage. *G*. Not sure I can take credit though as I've only had the plant a month: it was thought to be just out of flower when I got it and also has new growths! But I think this one's a spike...

I'll be surprised if it looks as good as yours though!

Susie11 07-11-2012 10:54 AM

Well done, good growing. I shall pray that you have a beautiful spike too.

Franco24 07-11-2012 11:35 AM

After your pictures, Susie, and everyone talking about this scent ... I had to experience it for myself. I'm expecting a plant any minute now (impatiently waiting for FedEx) with 3 spikes.

My only question is, Would I treat this more like my run of the mill intergeneric oncidium? (i.e. outside in summer with all my others?) or more like a miltoniopsis and keep it indoors year round with cooler temps? It seems to have characteristics and similar requirements of both.

I have over 250 orchids from Cattleya to Dracula - so I'm sure it'll fit in somewhere care wise ... just ... where?!

Susie11 07-11-2012 11:43 AM

Wow don't you have a lot of orchids?!! I only have about 38 and I am already running out of space for them. I live in a tower block so I do not have a garden to put anything outside in. So, I keep all of them indoors with me. I gave the Burrg. N.I intermediate temps and I basically kept her cool over winter. I gave it no winter rest and I potted her in sphag. I have all of my intergenerics in sphag or bark and they all seem to be doing well in it. The scent is amazing. I can smell it first thing in the morning and I can't stop myself from going over to it and sticking my nose deep inside the blooms to get the full load! Hope this helps.

Franco24 07-11-2012 11:49 AM

I can't wait to smell it. I'm hoping I'll open the box and just be overwhelmed with the sweet fragrance .... or have another gecko launch at my face ( ... yes I've really had that happen). haha. Thats a whole 'nother story.

I might pot it up in a mix of bark, charcoal, perlite, and sphag like all my other oncids and hang it in a tree outside for the summer ...

Susie11 07-11-2012 12:00 PM

Good luck with that. I have noticed that even though two hybrids might share the same name, their fragrance is often slightly different. There are so many different types of hybrids around that even though they might be called the same thing they still manage to be slightly unique?

Franco24 07-11-2012 12:04 PM

I agree with you there. Each orchid is unique. I have many different varieties of Onc. Sharry Baby, for example, and each has a slightly different fragrance (if my memory serves me correctly) I'm hoping to get them all to bloom at the same time to be able compare.

Thanks again for the tips! I'll be sure to share some pictures of my plant once it gets here later this evening.

Rowangreen 07-11-2012 01:00 PM

Actually I think with Sharry Baby it could be different clones. I heard that with Nelly Isler though all the ones you get are the same clone ('Swiss Beauty') as that's the only one of the cross they ever got to grow properly and bloom. Pretty amazing that the one clone that worked out should be SO popular!

Susie11 07-11-2012 02:03 PM

Yeah it is amazing. And then when you consider that one nurseries might smell different to another nurseries even though they are the same hybrid. Maybe culture has a part to play too.

That's precisely what I did with mine. Potted it in similar mix and it has hung outside from a tree branch last summer and this summer. It seems to like it. I think these are sort of like Milts in that they don't like to dry out and don't like extreme heat.

Susie11 07-11-2012 02:52 PM

That is what I have found out to be true too Silken, keep the medium moist and don't over heat them. Mine seems to like it.

You are quite right. I bought mine in October, and have kept it outside until recently. It did great over the winter, and even grew a bit. But once the heat hit, it started going downhill. :( I brought it inside a couple of weeks ago where I think it will recover nicely.

It looks great. The flower looks just like mine but its on a much taller spike! I find the scent a bit sharp as in lemon soap, but they may vary.
