There all in

I spent all week bringing in all my orchids and fine tuning the set up. It got down below 30 twice last week so I scrambled to get them in. I put my larger plants in the bay window which has a southern view, unobstructed. They get a lot of light as well as warmth in the winter. I pull curtains across the window at night and I make sure the humidifier is on the inside so I can run it all night. During these warm fall days I can open the side windows so it don't get so hot. I put all of my minis on the light stand across from the bay window. I have three shelves with 4 48" lights in each. The top has plain warm and cool flourescents, the middle has Ott grow lights and the bottom has cool T8 grow lights. The top can reach a high of 83 and a low of 71 with 48 to 69 percent humidity. The bottom can go as high as 73 not sure yet on how low with a steady 58 percent humidity. I am running a recirculating humidifier under the bottom shelf all day with a rest (for it) at night. I am keeping track of the ups and downs of the temp. and humidity on each shelf. I've taken two clear shower curtain liners and attached mylar on them and hung them around the shelving unit to keep the humidity level high and the warmth in when the snow falls. :_( I don't think I have much more room for any more plants but, I do have a nice variety.

Bay windows are made for orchids!
A beautiful display of your collection :) Congrats on all that great growing :D Is that an alocasia amazonica in the pot in the first and second photos? :hmm Here's a pic of mine :) - http://www.orchidboard.com/community...gone-wild.html - it's the 6th post down :) |
Julie, Very impressive! That's a lot of minis!! I'm going to have to have a look through your plant list.

I can see I'm going to be pestering you for ideas for mini cool to intermediate growers!! In fact, I think I'm going to start a new thread under minis now...
Thanks for sharing your set up, Julie! It really is inspiring. |
Hi Julie, nice job. Are the containers for humidity?
|

Dorothy, good eye. I didn't even see that Alocasia.
My Alocasia as of late has been ravaged by mites. As a result the plant is now only at half its beauty. |
:_( Aw your poor aloca !
Put that baby in rehab! |

It looks like a great setup, but one question. Do you ever bump a pot off the pot is is sitting on? I wouldn't dare do that.

Looking good, Julie
I've also pulled mine in for the nites - lost a few to the critters once again. Next year it's going to be different, I'm building a cage  The tempts have been real nice for the last few days, so they still go out into whats left of the sunshine. By next week it'll be time to cozy up inside for the winter. I do love having them outside, but kinda miss them too. Your grow stand has reminded me to get those lights up - I'm thinkiing a nice weekend project! :D |

Gloria, we've had such beautiful weather since I brought them in. Makes me mad that we had that cold snap but, it just made me get them in a little quicker. It takes a lot longer to water them but, I'm slowly getting a routine going so I can get done a little quicker.

See, that's why I don't set mine out during summer! I don't have to worry about temps when they stay inside!

I can understand that Ross, But see for me - I'm a gardener and have been for so many years it's hard not to see some of my orchids out there, besides I burn less lights this way.
I hate taking the loss of 'chids, but every year I get abit smarter too. Having a fast dog helps  ;) Julie the weather is is still nice, but abit windy - too windy infact which kinda kills me, knowing all that light and fresh air it going to waste, hehe! Oooh that weekend project ... got done last nite, I'm thrilled and the 'chids are happy too. :D |
Gloria, I'm glad that you got your lights done. I'm surprised that you still have good weather. You must not be right above Iowa because the last time we got a blast from Canada we darn near froze to death down here. That's when we got so cold at night. But, on the other hand I really could use a couple of nights in the 20's just to get rid of the mosquitos
