Spring 2012 project- PLANT SUGGESTIONS
Deadline for Suggestionshas passed
First poll is up!! http://www.orchidboard.com/community...ants-only.html Let's get this project underway! In order to let a maximum number of people join in, and to make sure shipping conditions are good for everyone, I aiming for us to be ready to buy the plants around late april. So patience is necessary! :) Once again, I also copied a lot from Rosie's great post from last year. Suggestions should be only from people who are taking part in the project. If you would like to join, SIGN UP HERE Since a 3 plant project may be too much work for me, for now I think we should keep it down to one intermediate temp growing plant Plant Criteria: Species only $20/€20 max. Canada $25-30 because orchids are more expensive there. (shipping not included) 12"max plant size (can be 16" including spike) Blooming Size or Near blooming size Temps: intermediate (buy can vary somewhat. ex: cool to warm growing plants) Available in the USA and Europe. Canada requirements may be added depending on participants. We won't use plants already used in previous projects. Please see link here for a list. Projects - What Are They & Previous Project Plants Info to provide with each suggestion 1. Plant name (and which temperature category it is for) 2. Link to ISOPE (if possible) 3. Link to a USA vendor 4. Link to a European vendor 5. Link to Canadian vendor (if some canadians join) (Vendor links should be to a blooming size plant within the price range). Unfortunately if you live outside of US/EU/Canada, from past experience it is very difficult to add your country as an availability requirement and still have a decent amount of suggestions to vote from. :( Some US vendors (you can use who ever you want just make sure they have good stuff) Orchids By Hausermann = OBH Oak Hill Gardens = OH Andy's Orchids = AO Carolina Orchids Home Page = CO Botanica Ltd. - orchids are our specialty = BO J&L Orchids European Vendors and Search Engine http://www.google.com/cse/home?cx=00...%3Azzs8tf1vx80 Claessen Orchideeen Großräschener Orchids = GO Popow Orchids = PP Orchid Species = OS Burnham Nursary = BN Orchid By Peter White = PW David Stead Orchids = DS Orchideen Lucke = OL Schwerter = SO Elsner Orchideen = EO Nardotto e Capello Shop = NC roellke-orchideen = RO akerne orchids Canadian Orchid vendors paramount orchids clouds orchids orchids in our tropics (outdated website) crystal star orchids Tropical Garden Orchids ForestView Gardens/ (Paph and Phal species) hawaiianbotanicals.com If you know of other reputable growers that should be on this list, please let me know! Hmmmm, I know from the last project that since the costs up here in Canada were higher, we bumped the price a bit. This will probably have no holdings for the US, as the prices are cheaper. Just saying that plants found in the US will likely be a tad higher up here, so that shouldn't stop a suggestion.
|
What is a reasonable amount in Canada then? I'll add that. I'll also have to add Canada vendors, so what growers are thre other than Paramount and Orchids in our Tropics?
|
Nu suggestions so far? Oh, bummer. :(
Too bad I can't give any suggestions since I don't know enough about orchids... |
We only just started! ;) I also need to get a list of Canada growers up in the first post.

I think it's better to let the canadians tell us, because we need good growers. I know of 2 that we always use, and they can probably give us more.

Camille, here you can find a list of canadian orchid vendors:

exciting stuff..........
these projects sound extremely exciting.... have browsed through all the previous on goings.... I"m going to keep an eye on this thread..... take note, and am going to attempt joining in the growing experience..... can't help with any suggestions, but as im on the other side of the planet, i'll join in the fun.... for the fun ... Thumbs up to you guys.... |
Thanks ALOT for starting this project for 2012 Camille! I had wondered if this was going to be happening this spring... I promise I will look into it when I get a chance probably next weekend. Merci encore.
|
I was going to recommend Phrag besseae, but apparently its kind of pricey, and can be a bit large. So, I'll try and get the ball rolling by suggesting some smaller plants
Ceratostylis philippinensis, $18.00 at Andy's Orchids, IOSPE PHOTOS Leptotes bicolor, $24.00 at Andy's IOSPE PHOTOS Edit: Removing Neo falcata, as it was previously used. Inserting: Seidenfadenia (Aerides) mitrata, $26, Andy's IOSPE PHOTOS Sophronitis acuensis or cernua, both at Andy's IOSPE PHOTOS IOSPE PHOTOS |
You can add Akerne to the list of European vendors:
Akerne Orchids: Neofinetia Akerne Orchids: Leptotes |
I initially wanted to suggest Dendrobium peguanum, but I can't find it on any of the Canadian vendors' sites. :(
IOSPE PHOTOS Two vendors in the US: Dendrobium peguanum x sib: Orchids By Hausermann Andy's Orchids - Orchid Species - Dendrobium - peguanum One in the EU: Dendrobium peguanum - Orchideen der Schwerter Orchideenzucht I will keep looking! |
We'll keep it in mind, I'm still waiting for a canadian to give me some recommendations of reputable vendors to add to the list.
|
It's kind of a shame Lycaste aromatica is juuust a touch too big for this project (12-16" leaves), because it's a great plant.
IOSPE PHOTOS Purchase: USA: Lycaste aromatica at Santa Barbara Orchid Estate Lycaste aromatica EU Nardotto e Capello Shop Elsner Orchideen | Lycaste aromatica - Details Lycaste aromatica plants "waiting for stock" Canada - listed at Clouds for $35. |
I think that it could be up for discussion. Lycaste aromatica did pop up in several other projects, but I don't remember if it ever got 'approved' to go to poll. Personally I don't have an issue with the height. It deciduous in the winter, which is when space is most at a premium under the lights.
|
One of its many charms. Watch out for the vicious thorns on top of the PBs after the leaves are shed though. :)

Regarding some Canadian vendors:
Clouds is awesome but many are seedlings, not bloom size. Paramount has a huge selection but a lot of the bloom size plants fall into the $35.00 range. C.R. Orchids has some good plants but his website is horribly out of date. I am supposedly getting a price list in the near future of what he has. Orchids in Our Tropics has good quality but again, website hopelessly out of date and I e-mailed them a month ago and never heard back. Crystal Star is good. Those are the ones I have dealt with. Not too many places for an entire country for choices :blushing: |

Unfortunately for the people that already own the future project plant, you can either sit out of the project, or buy a second plant. I know a few people who have gone for that second option (and that's how I ended up with 2 Haraella odorata!) |

ERIA bractescens
IOSPE PHOTOS Oak Hill Gardens $15 Only two hits from the OB on this one. Looks interesting but not sure of the full size of it. Cant find an EU vendor though as google isnt working and giving me an error for some reason. Dimerandra stenopetala IOSPE PHOTOS http://www.kopf-orchideen.de/ Not sure of this one as I cant read German on the plant list and the excel isnt translating it right. J&L Orchids ~ All Other Genera 2 $20 Scroll down to find it. Not sure why J&L is set up that way. http://www.jlorchids.com/assets/imag...petala_lrg.jpg Camille, I got you on that. The vote will determine the plant choice so Im all good. |
I'll start compiling the suggestion list tomorrow if I have time, otherwise I'll do it Monday since I'm going down to France for the weekend. I get to go to a orchid show on sunday!!

WOW, take me with you Camille!!! LOL...
Such a lot of great suggestions already. I'm going to have to start digging around and add to the list myself. On a side note, I also know of people who had the project plant but would still chime in about how they grow the plant(s), show us activity and blooming as it occured, etc... That way, we could all learn from their experiences as well. I'd hate for someone to feel like they can't participate in the discussion at least. |
Ok, well just to add a few more to the list, while I'm procrastinating on doing real work.
Aerangis hyaloides, 16 at Andy's IOSPE PHOTOS Barbosella cuculatta or handroi, 16/20 at Andy's IOSPE PHOTOS IOSPE PHOTOS Brachiata andina, 20 at Andy's IOSPE PHOTOS Promenaea xanthina, 20 at Andy's IOSPE PHOTOS |
I really like NatalieS suggestion, Dendrobium peguanum. Too bad it can't be found at the Canadian vendors...

Yeah, some of these are great ideas, but have limited availability across all three+ regions. That's why camille and Co needed some help, because you've gotta call the vendors, ask if they have them, ask how many... blah blah blah, lots of time. I would've offered to help, but I'm writing my doctoral thesis right now, and I've only got time to procrastinate on some orchid websites. Not to mention, I'd probably buy a bunch of stuff if I called them, just ask Peter...
Thanks again to those who are helping out! |
