The new 'chids arrived today via 2-day FedEx shipping.
They are both in great shape and the packing was top-notch! They are in 2" pots but came in a large flat box...each pot has a long stake in it to keep them stable during shipping and they were covered and taped with shredded paper.

Very nice...I'd order from them again without hesitation

Do you have one? Is it mounted?

Vanessa 09-08-2007 10:09 AM

Nice price! Were these shipped in the bark shown in your photo or bareroot?

cb977 09-08-2007 11:27 AM

Hi Vanessa :)

When I ordered them, it said "bare-root" but they arrived in beautiful brand new bark mix, in 2" pots.

I put mine into a small plastic basket with a little sphag moss. I'm not sure what my friend Linda will do with hers.

The roots are clean and white with nice healthy tips.

I'm very impressed with this purchase and will pay closer attention to this vendor

Vanessa 09-08-2007 12:10 PM

What a nice surprise to have them arrive that way. Thanks Sue for the heads up on this vendor! Word of mouth is always welcomed when you can't see 'in person' what you are ordering. :)

Dorothy 09-08-2007 12:30 PM

Uh oh .. get them while you can .. the price just went up but I still think it's a bargain!! ... http://www.orchidsoflososos.com/stor...fceefe9e497ce7

Not yet  but it looks like a great candidate for mounting. Maybe one in pot, one on mount? :hmm Did this come up back when suggestions were flying out about project 4 plant? I'd have jumped at this (maybe) - I still love my Aerangis!

cb977 09-08-2007 02:47 PM

Hi Ross :D

This plant was suggested in the process of the project but...I did lots of research on them and found that their life expectancy is only 3 or 4 years. For the project, that wouldn't be good but at this sale price I just had to order them. One is going to a good friend of mine and the one I'm keeping is in a small plastic basket with a little sphag moss.

Thanks for reminding me. I remember some were not considered further for various reasons. I need long-lived 'cause I have been known to kill 'chids with kindness  :blushing:

Orchids of Los Osos

I just placed an order with OLO. I got Beallara Marfitch 'Howard's Dream' AM/AOS, and Sederia japonica.......ON SALE!! Will post pics when they arrive.

Dorothy 10-07-2007 12:23 PM

Woohoo

gmdiaz 10-07-2007 12:36 PM

Oh, how exciting!

Yes, do post pictures. We just love to share in your orchid arrival happiness.

cb977 10-07-2007 04:49 PM

Terri, I ordered two Sederia japonica from them about a month ago...they were on sale for $5.75 each!!!

I was not expecting the high-quality plants that arrived for that price...imagine my surprise! :yikes:

You are going to be very happy

quiltergal 10-07-2007 04:57 PM

Sue, the Sederia is back up to $9.95, but it's potted not bare root. That is still better than full price. The Beallara was only $17.50!! I was all over that one. I've been wanting both of these for a long time. Me thinks this will be the last plant purchase until spring.

IdahoOrchid 10-09-2007 09:22 PM

You will want to repot your plants IMMEDIATELY upon arrival and quarantine them for a couple of months. Nearly every plant I have gotten from them (paphs mainly) has been infested with root buggies. I also got a case of mealies from them that I am still fighting (and slowly winning) a year later.

The only plant I got that did not have roots bugs had bad roots that I did not catch until way too late - on an expensive charlesworthii.

I am certain that many have had good luck with them, but I have talked with a few people recently that have had similar experiences to mine.

Rosim_in_BR 10-09-2007 10:07 PM

I wish I could order Sedirea japonica here. It is very difficult to find (in fact, I have never seen it available). Lucky you!!

quiltergal 10-09-2007 11:46 PM

Ackk!! Creepy crawlies! Thanks for the heads up Steven. I'll get the potting medium ready and the the Neem oil. Wish I had known sooner. Ah well, we shall see. They shipped today.

Don't panic :)
Mine arrived in perfect condition

Thanks for your post Steven...that's the reason everything gets repotted as soon as it gets home :)

quiltergal 10-11-2007 09:13 PM

My plants arrived today. The good news is the Sederia looks good though I haven't repotted yet. Will do that on Saturday. No sign of mealies. The bad news is the Beallara has scale.:(( My experience with fighting scale is it has always been a losing battle. Both plants are in quarantine in different rooms until I decide what my plan of action will be. I'm very disappointed.:(

Hi Terri...

you should contact them about the Beallara. I'd repot the Sederia first in case you find a problem there too :(

We all work way too hard for our money and to get something that is below our expectations should not be taken lightly.

About the scale, I've had success by spraying the affected areas with Listerine (moistens, loosens and cleans the area) and then using a dental scraper to remove the little buggers :)

Please let us know what the vendor has to say if you decide to contact them...good luck :cheer:

quiltergal 10-12-2007 11:44 AM

I emailed them last night. Haven't heard back yet. I think Michael the owner is out of the country. The plant was on sale, only $17.50, so I'm not out that much money. I was just surpised that any greenhouse would send out a plant with scale clearly visible. A newbie may have stuck that plant in with the rest of their collection and had a real mess on their hands.

I don't want to hassle with sending it back. It would have to go FedEx now that the weather is cooler, and I'm sure I'd have to pay for return shipping.

I've heard several suggestions for getting rid of scale. A systemic pesticide was recommended in conjunction with horticulture oil spray. I have Neem oil. Will that work on scale?

IdahoOrchid 10-15-2007 10:52 PM

I believe that neem will work. It should coat and suffocate the scale.

I would spray down both plants with neem and repot as soon as you possibly can.

I just lost another plant to the mealies I got from OLO. I thought I got them off of it but I guess not. Now the watch is on again to make sure they are not spreading.

razka3 03-12-2008 11:56 AM

My Dendrobium kingianum I bought from Los Osos, I just found out, has aphids. I only saw maybe 10 of them. I was wondering why the flowers were closing back up... I thought maybe I wasn't giving it the correct environment to bloom properly. However, upon closer inspection, it's definitely aphids, maybe 5 big ones and 5 small ones. Doesn't seem to be too bad. I'll have to keep a closer eye on it.

Just a heads up, as they still seem to be having some issues controlling their pest populations!

Djarum Black 03-12-2008 12:36 PM

I picked up a couple Zygo's from them at a show. They were already boxed up for me because I had asked for them beforehand. Never again!
When I got home I found they were full of mealy bugs (yuck!)
I mean I know that they say that every orchid nursery has a certain level of bugs that they just find "acceptable". But gosh, you would think that if you are bringing stuff to a show it would be clean.
Best foot forward right? I guess not :(

razka3 03-12-2008 04:39 PM

I just accidentally broke off one of the den kingianum flowers when I was misting another den mounted behind it. So I opened the flower all the way and what did I find inside? 5 big aphids, and a mealy bug!@#$%

So I broke off all the other flowers that were already slightly opened and explored and found more aphids and mealy bugs. So now my plant has no flowers, but still quite a few buds that should hopefully survive and open... and hopefully no more aphids or mealy bugs... I'll keep checking though.

Definitely watch out for this grower... unclem2 on ebay, which is Orchids of Los Osos.

Gin 03-12-2008 05:11 PM

Last spring I bought a Paph. from them on ebay . It arrived and promptly fell out of the pot... no roots , I emailed them no answer , got POed and called . They apoligized and sent a new plant . They did make it good.. the first plant did not make it . If you call talk to the lady that runs the office . Gin

lilricky 03-15-2008 09:15 AM

This is disheartening. I just ordered a couple of Massie's from them. Never had bugs, what should I be looking for?
Is scale a problem with these?
Thanks

quiltergal 03-18-2008 07:41 PM

I would recommend to anyone who purchases from OLO to repot your plants immediately. I'm still doing battle with scale on the Brlla, and the Sediria had mealies. I nabbed those quickly and haven't seen any sign of them since. They never responded to my email, soooo... I won't be doing business with them again.

cb977 03-18-2008 08:35 PM

I guess I was lucky...the two Sederias I got from them arrived with no problems and are doing fine.
I'm so sorry to hear the troubles you are all having :bua:

pale blue 04-30-2008 06:56 AM

When does this place actually ship? I ordered on 4/20, they charged my card on 4/21 and no sign of them yet :scratchhead: I did email them, waiting to hear back now.

pale blue 05-04-2008 07:45 AM

Just a follow-up to my earlier post after I emailed them, I had the plants the next day. Both were in spike and in great condition. No complaints other than that!

quiltergal 05-06-2008 11:21 PM

Megan, I'd still recommend repotting. Better safe than sorry.

I totally repot all of my orchids (including these Los Osos ones) once I get them with the exception of 1. It was a massive phal with 4 blooming spikes but this was from a different vendor I trust.

quiltergal 05-07-2008 10:07 PM

Cowboys East 05-26-2008 12:52 AM

Recently purchased a Sedirea japonica from Los Osos (ebay) and overall I was pleased. The plant had nice roots and was in bloom. However, there were mealy bugs at the base and in two of the unopened buds but I think I took care of that. For the price, I got a nice plant. Shipped with a tracking number and really fast as well.

WhiteRabbit 01-26-2009 07:02 PM

Just found this thread -
bought a sedirea and a zygo a few months back from this
seller.
I repotted the sedirea right away - did not see any signs of anything nasty - nice roots.
Just repotting the zygo now with a bit of trepidation after finding this thread -
Only thing I found in zygo pot besides lots of roots was a small wormy looking critter which I hope is just a small worm!?:hmm

The sedirea still looks good - and has been growing and haven't seen any signs of anything bad.

Just wanted to post my experience with this seller - got worried after reading this thread - but both plants look good
