Nobile hybrids showing buds!
These pictures were taken one month ago.
I have grown them under full sun filtered through window. I burned about two leaves, but that's about it. Then I transferred these guys to my friends apartment where there is a unheated but glass protected balcony since last november. I am going back tomorow to check on the progress. I hope that I will see lots of growing buds, not tons of keikis. lol First three pictures and the very last picture are of Love Memory Fizz. When I bought it last winter, it came with two mature cane, one of which had tons of flowers. It grew 4 canes during the summer. now all 4 of those new canes and one of those mature canes (showing in the picture with no leaves, well, there are two of them, but the shorter one is the one I'm talking about) have something poking out of them along their length. At the bottom, three new shoots are growing fast already. Winter has been quite mild this year in NYC. The next two pictures are of Oriental Smile Fantasy. It came with one broken off mature cane loaded with very exotic flowers and another tall cane that was still growing. It got really really tall over the summer. Towards the end of summer, an unexpected new shoot started and that one got stunted when the cool weather hit. The tall mature cane is now showing lots of little bumps. hopefully flower buds....the cane dropped all the leaves by the way. The next two picture are of Yellow Song Canary. It had quite a few canes when I bought it. Three or four of them had many flowers. One cane is showing a few keikis. It actually grew keikis during the summer as well, but I picked them off. They showed no sign of showing flower buds at the time these pictures were taken. I can live without this one though. hehe Love Memory and Oriental Smile Fantasy are my absolute favorites!!! :) Keeping my fingers crossed for tomorrow I will find out how they are doing! |
How exciting! :wtg:

I hope you'll find lots of buds!! :)
Now that's an idea, sending the plants to a friend's place. I want some nobiles, but just can give them the winter rest they need. But I do know some people that could, hmmm..... |

Camille- Yeah, as long as your friend are very willing to host some plants in there unheated space, why not? hehe I plant to limit the number to three at a time though. This guy has spacious balcony, but he is also a minimulist and easily feel threatened by any invaders. haha but I asked him that my plants only need to spend a couple of months in the winter. Guess what, now he wants to keep at least one for his own enjoyment when they all flower. Now I don't know what to say. I mean I did compensate by buying dinner and stuff every once in a while. Because I do call him about once a week to remind him of watering them, which is too much for him sometimes. well, I will find out how the nobiles are doing. please please lots buds, not keikis! |
Lots of Buds, yay!!!!!
So I went over to my friend's place for dinner around 6pm. While the table was being ready, I quickly turned to my dendrobiums and checked the progress on the little bumps. What a pleasant surprise!!!
There were lots and lots of flower buds growing on all of them. Well, all except for Yellow Song, only two canes of which had 4 and 6 spikes each. None of the newer canes that grew this past summer had anything on them. First four pictures are of Love Memory Fizz. All four new canes still have green leaves on them and all four canes have about 8 spikes coming out. still quite small, though. One old, but previously not bloomed cane has 8 spikes with 3-4 buds on each. One spike has 5 buds on (the first picture, which looks like a little cluster of green bananas), which is the most I've ever seen on this variety! Yay!!! The next three pictures are of Oriental Smile Fantasy. The new cane has about 8 spikes, buds about to open very soon. It looked like a few more spikes are on their way, but the top 8 nodes looked like they will not have anything. I wonder if nursery growers cut the top nodes that are flowerless because some of dendrobiums including this one came with top portion of the cane cut off when I bouthg them. Anyways, what I find very interesting is that the old cane that flowered last spring has one spike initiated at the lower part of the cane, right under the lowest node that had flower spike last year. The last three pictures are of Yellow Song. The performance here is rather disappointing, but there are some buds growing. What is very interesting with this guy is that what was keikis a month ago somehow turned into flower buds. You can see in the pictures that the flower spikes on these canes have little leaves, then four or five buds follow after that. I actually plucked off two keikis back in January. Good thing I left all the others alone. hahaha Overall, I'd say this is a success! |
Great friend! Looks like you are going to have a good showing for sure.
|
awesome!
:wtg: |
Looks like you can look forward to lots of nice blooms!! Did you bring them home with you or are they staying there a bit longer?
|
With the speed the buds are growing on Oriental Smile Fantasy and on one of the canes of Love Memory, I would say they would be in bloom sometime this month.
I left them all there still, mainly in fear of bud blasting due to sudden environment change. Then the whole summer growth and winter rest will be wasted. I think I would leave Love Memory (it will be amazing with lots of canes with buds) for my friend's enjoyment at least for a couple of weeks. I would bring Oriental Smile here to my apartment as soon as it is in bloom. They are magical. the color and the scent...oooooh, yeah! :) I'm rather disappointed about the Yellow Song. It is supposed to be the best bloomer and when I bought it last year, it was just amazing. Maybe it wants to rest this year after such a stellar season. |
Great looking plants! They should be spectacular in bloom. Maybe you'll make an orchid-growing convert by leaving the Love Memory at your friend's house while it's blooming.

I doubt it, he cannot keep anything alive unless I call and tell him what to do exactly. Anyway, my plan regarding this Love Memory den is to sell to someone else as it is getting a little too big for me.
I am going to start over with one of the new ones (two mature canes at the most) I bought this year. they grow so well and so much! :) |
Picture update
As of last weekend, Oriental Smile Fantasy opened up, and this past weekend, Love Memory began to open.
Yellow Song is still in bud. I'm posting pictures of OS and LM. OS looks nothing like what it should look like, but I hope the real color kicks in sooner or later. :D |
Looks like they will be gorgeous in full bloom!!:)

I will! :)

Looks like you will certainly have a healthy blooming! Lots of buds on that Oriental Smile.
|
Yellow Song Canary in bloom finally!
Very pale yellow at first but the deep golden yellow should set in over time.
Not that many buds this year, but still look pretty nice. I will soon post some good picture of the other two as well. Enjoy! :) |
Glorious blooms!
on my Oriental Smile "Fantasy", which is my favorite nobile den. All the buds are open now and the real color kicked in, looking amazingly beautiful to me. I love the color and the scent of this plant.
This picure was taken this morining, but came out rather fuzzy. I will take better ones soon. Yellow Song "canary" is not bearing that many flowers at all this year. Maybe it will grow a few canes this year and produce many flowers next spring. |
More picture update
So finally today, I brought two of my three nobile dendrobiums back from their winter resting place at my friend's.
My friend wanted to keep Love Memory, so I left that one as a gift, which had four canes loaded with flowers. Yellow Song's performance is nothing like last years, but the size of individual flowers is much larger. I wonder if that comes with the condition of winter rest. Actually, all three dendrobiums had increased flower size. Oriental Smile Fantasy is my absolute favorite. It is almost hypnotic!!! so tall and that is a little bit of issue for me. (tips over easily) Ok, enjoy the pictures, everyone! :D |
After close examination of my Oriental Smile Fantasy, I found a few littls bumps on the top three nodes. I think for some reason, the plant decided to make some more flowers, but it is out of chilling period now, so I wouldn't be surprised if they end up as keikis.
There are some more bumps toward the lower part of the cane as well. The older cane that flowered last season is bearing one spike with three buds. This guy has a funny habit. |
That is interesting.
