My First Blooms

4 Attachment(s)
My old place wasn't kind to orchids (not enough light) and nothing ever bloomed. But our new house is great. I now have 4 orchids blooming and more spikes on others. Here are my first blooms:

NoID Oncidium type

Paph. Hsinying Maru x Paph. Ruby Mist

Wow! You have some great plants there.

silken 01-27-2012 09:04 PM

They are all gorgeous. Nice choice of orchids! I really love the NOID Onc. and the Twinkle 'Red Raspberry' I would love one of those two.

billc 01-28-2012 03:59 AM

The NOID oncidium intergeneric is beautiful. Love that flower!

They're all beautiful and the plants look very healthy. I love that dark colored oncidium. Good growing.

Awesome. Well done.

Thanks everyone! I have to thank the orchid board for encouragement and vast information on growing. I would have given up long time ago.

silken 01-28-2012 11:23 AM

Than goodness you didn't give up! I enjoyed the photos of your beauties so much!

bballr4567 01-28-2012 11:31 AM

Beautiful blooms on that noid onc. Love the contrast in it.

Anyone have an ides what it might be. Would like to get something similar if I could find one.

bballr4567 01-28-2012 11:41 AM

No idea from me. First time I've seen one with that coloring. I've seen purple and black, yellow and black but not that.

What I have is a NoID from COSTCO (It had Rocketfarms.com label on it) and there is no telling what it might be. However, last year I saw an orchid with similar (not exact) colorings at Pacific Orchid Expo:
Bakerara Silver Chalice 'Truth'

But this one has much larger flowers.

It looks a lot like my Odm. Margaret Holm 'Alpine'. Can't say for sure, tho.

Beautiful! I would love to have that oncidium hybrid!

Bud 01-28-2012 07:09 PM

I just love your flowers...especially the twinkle in the mug...I am glad you moved and can grow your orchids to bloom

Vanda lover 01-28-2012 09:17 PM

Iv'e seen oncidium odontoglossum type hybrids with the name Cambria that look similar.

Gage 01-28-2012 11:01 PM

Love the Oncidium noid and LOVE the Twinkle! I've never seen a twinkle with such relatively substantial blooms.

JaneEyre 01-29-2012 04:09 PM

Thanks everyone!

It really does look like it. My oncidium will still be a NoID but now i have something else to call it.

Keith Briscoe 01-29-2012 11:50 PM

To me, it looks like Odm. Margaret Holm 'Larkspur' -- I have one just like it. Google a pic of it. Love them.

NYCorchidman 10-26-2012 02:35 AM

Odm. Margaret Holm 'Alpine' is what I thought as well.

By the way, it's amazing what the light can do to orchids. I also moved to a brighter apartment this year and other than keeping my plants watered enough, everyone is doing much better as far as flowering is concerned.
I'm happy for you!

I love your red twinkle in the white mug. I tend to do the same thing with any plant potted in 3 inch pots. They look so neat that way.

Leisurely 10-29-2012 09:47 PM

Beautiful! Number one is choice.

Daenerys 10-29-2012 11:36 PM

I think Odontoglossum Margaret Holm is the match.

The pictures here and here look very similar to yours.

Thanks :) at first I didn't know what to do with extra tall 3" pots as most ceramic pots aren't tall enough but the mugs work perfectly.

I am happy with my new house - the light is making a great difference. I do find that I need to water more often. Took me some time readjust my routine.

My NoID Odm. Margaret Holm is in bloom again :). It got bad sun damage while I was away for two weeks, so I had to remove one of the blistered p-bulbs. It rebound nicely and rewarded me with few blooms.

Yes, they do look identical. Thanks to everyone's input here, I have decided that Odm. Margaret Holm is what I have. I just keep NoId designation next to the tag.

The Orchid Boy 11-01-2012 10:53 AM

I like Paph. Hsinying Maru x Paph. Ruby Mist the best. Great growing!

NYCorchidman 11-02-2012 03:50 AM

Your Margaret Holm has a nice bold pattern.
Wow~ you were gone for two weeks and they were all alive when you got back? lol

Just short of burning is the key I heard. I do burn a lot more leaves in my new apartment, but overall, the plants are doing much better.

ronaldhanko 11-02-2012 11:14 AM

Excellent work, Nastia. Trust you are well.

Thanks Ron :)
All is well with me, just been really busy with work and home projects so I haven't been on OB lately. I try to check in once in a while :)

Thank you. It was my first Paph but unfortunately it didn't make it. It hanged on for ever making me think it was getting better, but eventually one by one each growth turned yellow and died. I'm just starting to recover from the loss and thinking of giving another Paph a try. :)

Yeah, it takes time to adjust to new environments. Glad to hear the plants are doing well.
