Phals in Bloom again!
This is one of the two Home Depot phals from last winter. I was lucky to find very nice and healthy ones.
Flower count is slightly less than the first bloom, but I'm happy with what I have. :) The other one (not pictured here) is about to open its first bud as well. It will be a white/pink candy stripe. In the second picture, the spiking phal behind the white/red lip one is a pure white variety that had five flowers last winter. I'm excited to see how many buds I will see this year. ;) |
Very nice flower!

That's a pretty bloom. All of your plants look robust and well grown. Great job!

Lovely.

Thank you, everyone! :)

Very nice Noid! Some are really worth buying. Unfortunately I've somewhat neglected my Noids, so non of them are blooming this year. First thing I need to do is repot a bunch of them, they've nearly flopped out of their pots.

More pirctures...
The fourth bud began to open up today. It is very cold out and what a nice day to stay in and watch this beautiful orchid blossoms at home ;)
This is probably my favorite phal. I'm also posting pictures of the other home depot bought phal, which I bought along with this white/red lip one. It was my super lucky day that day. This guy was all in bud last week and it began to open just a couple of days ago. It is sitting in my bathroom. What a nice sight when I come home from work in the evening and walk into the bathroom! The plant is much smaller compared to the regular phal and the flowers are bigger than mini phals but smaller than regular phals. I'd say medium sized phal. It grewo 4 leaves this summer, so I was expecting it would send up two spikes, but no. well, well, well... It had 16 flowers last winter, but it now has half the count. I still like it, 8 is plenty enough for me. :) Enjoy~ |
All your orchids look beautiful. Excellent growing.
|
Two beauties! I really like the soft coloring and stripes on the second.
Good growing and congrats on the reblooms Judi |
Lowe's seems to always give away orchids if you just talk to the department manager. I worked there for about 2 months and got both of my large ones for about $2.
Plus, my store just started to carry catts which is REALLY tempting. Love the white one for sure. |
Thanks, everyone!
Josh- We don't have Lowes in Manhattan. It would be nice to find cattleyas at Home Depot here but they only carry phals as far as orchids are concerned, and the plants they sell look terrible usually. It is sad. I wonder how many people actually buy all beat up looking plants. That is why I say I got super lucky last year because I found two very pretty plants that were also very healthy. |
Ahhh, mis-read what store.
Yea, I would be picking up a cattleya if I had a good enough area to grow them. Maybe when I get a light. |
Really nice Phal. One of my favourites has similar colouring and is also a NoID.

fully open...
Both the white one with red lip and the white/pink candy stripe phals are in full bloom with eight flowers each.
I just took a picture of the candy stripe one in the bathroom. For some reason, the flower orientation is reckless while the white one is perfectly facing one direction. Still pretty flowers to look at. :D |
I'm usually no fan of white Phals, but with that lip it's just gorgeous. I agree with Junebug that all your plants look well grown.
I understand why it's your favourite. :) |
I love your Phals. I think I see other healthy looking orchids in the background. What else are you growing?
|
Thank you, all!
What others do I grow?
Well, I have lots of plants, mostly common hybrids, but those are what I love. Lots of dendrobiums, Sharry Baby( a few different varieties) and other oncidium alliance, lots of paphs, and a few phals. I'm sorry the names are not very specific at all, but there are just too many to list actually. hehe I'm in the process of getting rid of quite a few before I move to a new place next month. My goal is to keep the ones I love the most and then start to collect some sun loving plants that I was unable to grow in my current condition. |
Growing season begins!
As the weather gets warmer and warmer, all the phals are sending up new roots and leaves.
The pink candy stripe one is given away, but the while one with red lip is here with me, still in bloom. I noticed that phals tend to adjust my dry condition by losing bottom leaves and keeping only about 4-5 leaves. Each year, they grow two new leaves (except for some that grow up to 4 leaves!) and then lose two oldest leaves. This particular white/red lip one is the only exception. It has only lost one very small seedling leaf and has 9 leaves with it. I grew this one under LED light last year and it was successful I would say. This year, I have it about three feet away from the south window. I will see what difference this will make. love to see a new leaf coming from the center of phalaenopsis! |
