Phalaenopsis Artemis (amabilis x equestris) in its first bloom
8 Attachment(s)
Artemis was one of the most widely venerated of the Ancient Greek deities. Her Roman equivalent is Diana. Some scholars believe that the name and indeed the goddess herself was originally pre-Greek. Homer refers to her as Artemis Agrotera, Potnia Theron: "Artemis of the wild land, Mistress of Animals". In the classical period of Greek mythology, Artemis (Greek: (nominative) Ἄρτεμις, (genitive) Ἀρτέμιδος) was often described as the daughter of Zeus and Leto, and the twin sister of Apollo. She was the Hellenic goddess of the hunt, wild animals, wilderness, childbirth, virginity and young girls, bringing and relieving disease in women; she often was depicted as a huntress carrying a bow and arrows. The deer and the cypress were sacred to her. In later Hellenistic times, she even assumed the ancient role of Eileithyia in aiding childbirth.
My flowers resemble more of the equestris strain... the amabilis shows on the spotting on the lip and the alabaster petals. I never imagined this would bloom since its just a tiny seedling with a leaf barely six inches long...with two spikes at that! I cant wait to present it to all of you even if its got only two flowers in bloom...but I hope all the buds open and give me a show of blooms...I will post those pictures soon |
It is just beautiful.

Lovely thing. I've had one for about two years, and can not get it to bloom. Right now it has a spike about a foot long, but the buds blast just after they appear. What's your secret? Thanks.

Phal bastianii, phal anabolism (variegated leaf), phal celebensis, phal gigantea, phal lobbii, phal manii var flava, phal mariae, stuartians var nobilis, tetrapsis, corningiana....and a few others. How's that for a list?? Any suggestions/comments? I really didn't shop much for myself this Christmas (yes that's how it works in this family) so for some reason I feel entitled! |
