A little non-stop flowering mini phal

I got this little doritis hybrid at a local farmer's market. The name tag says TS Micky and some numbers without any parentage. It is sold at the market pretty much all year around. I was never really drawn to flowers with dots, but one day in August, this one somehow appealed to me and so I brought one home.
It had about 9 flowers/buds on it when first brought home. The tip of the spike continued to elongate making 7 more flowers and it has five of those left on the spike although it doesn't really show there are five in the picture. The tip of the spike looks like it is going to make some more buds. I guess this one is one of those that continue on blooming on an old spike in addition to making new spikes. :)

It is also making a new leaf as well. I think I will keep this one and see how long the spike gets.

It is quite cute.

By the way, I grow this one under a halogen lamp along with a few other mini orchids like Twinkle, tolumnia, and two regular sized paphiopedilums.

Cute! I like the shape of the petals and sepals.

NYCorchidman 12-16-2011 11:40 PM

At first I thought those little wavy grooves on the petals were eaten up by bugs, but they were just normal part of this flower. lol

I like this little guy. The thing is I sort of miss it when it had lots of flowers on it. It looks like once it loses the initial ten flowers or so, it only keeps about four of five at a time as the spike continues to grow and make more buds. well...still cute. :)
I might buy a whole bunch of these tomorrow at a farmer's market and put them all in a large container. They will all have lots of flowers each. :D

I have 2 Doritaenopsis and both are sequential bloomers like yours is. I also have 2 equestris that are also sequential bloomers, one has been in constant bloom since August 2005 !!! When one spike's blooms start ending it's already put out another !

NYCorchidman 12-17-2011 11:08 AM

Flowering since 2005? OMG!!!! I will have to find out how long mine will continue to stay in bloom. 5th month in bloom so far, which is still great for me as all my other phals usually stay in bloom for 4 or 5 months. This one is going to break the record in my apartment it looks like. :)

ronaldhanko 12-17-2011 12:39 PM

Lovely flowers and nice that the plant is in bloom all the time.

camillenad 12-17-2011 03:48 PM

So cute !!

NYCorchidman 12-17-2011 04:27 PM

Thank you, everyone!

I just came back from the farmer's market. They did have more of these little ones, some with even two spikes. Unfortunately, I'm quite picky and didn't find anything appealing. Some were broken due to careless, thoughtless customers.
I should have been out there earlier to pick some nice ones.
Well, at least I brought home some nice amaryllis again. Yay!!! :)

greenbean 12-18-2011 12:46 AM

I wish they sold things like this at my farmer's market! Nice find!

ajdamania2 12-18-2011 09:14 AM

I have a smiliar one.I bought in 2005 and it has never been without flowers. Once , the flower stem last about 9 months. i was so bored of that and in the end i cut the flower stem ( i know it is very mean of me ) but the doritis took his revenge by giving another stem.just couple of weeks later. It must be something in their genera.

I wish my other orchids did that. Wouldn't that be so nice? :)
I think I might cut the spike if it gets too long. It's one of those mini orchids I have sitting along with other minis and too long a spike will threaten the space, which I cannot tolerate. lol

orphansparrow 12-24-2011 02:29 PM

it is very cute. :)

you know, sometimes i just love orchids without spikes or flowers too. that last photo there, with just the leaves, is so pretty isn't it? :)

It depends. I personally find the leaves of phals unattractive, although I like to see it in growth like I do with anything else. There's something about seeing something grow.

I like most of my paphs even when not in bloom. I also like dendrobiums not in bloom, they sort of look like funny looking bamboo.

A keiki would be nice. Where did you cut the spike and where did the keiki form?

I've never seen a keiki on phals although I've seen others' pictures.

The keikis usually form on the very end of the spike after the last bloom. When I cut the spikes I cut them as close to the plant as possible. I don't like to see brown stubs everywhere. The Phals that keiki are both of my equestris, my equestris 'Hana Nguyen' has one right now. I've got a P. Millie's Brown Bacon (braceana X venosa) that refuses to bloom for me and won't quit putting out keikis !!!! I put a major threatening ultimatum on it recently so if it doesn't shape up it's OUTTA here !!! Three years for a LARGE and healthy Phal is bordering on my limit especially since I can use the space !!!! It's in a 6.5" pot !!!

Hmm not sure if mine has equastris in its parentage. will see what will happen in the future.

By the way, I understand plants that are not blooming taking up space. I take them out. out out.

Oh, thank you, it's nice to know!
How come I couldn't find anything when I did the search?

Merlyn 12-26-2011 11:20 PM

Did you look at the RHS site ? I found nothing under Dtps.TS Micky so tried Dtps. Micky and nothing so spelled it out Doritaenopsis Micky and got it. I don't quit with one failure ! Also I can NEVER get RHS to work with abbreviations !!!

NYCorchidman 05-03-2012 04:53 PM

about to start its long bloom season again!

So this little mini phal grew one new leaf while in flower last year. Then the leaf seemed stuck half way. looks funny. all the flowers fell off and the old spike just stayed on. so I just snipped it off last week.

It's been growing another spike since February, and now the buds are visible. should bloom in the next two weeks or so. love this one! :)

NYCorchidman 05-18-2012 06:18 PM

Update

now the buds are colored with some spots. They should open very soon now.

I see 9 buds on this new spike, which is the same number of buds when I first bought this plant last year.
I guess I did everything right, or this little is just a super strong freak! :D

lostonthebeach 05-18-2012 07:31 PM

I love being able to see the spots on the buds before they open. Very interesting.

NYCorchidman 05-18-2012 09:12 PM

Ditto!

NYCorchidman 05-23-2012 02:08 PM

Open!!!

I got lazy and only took one pic. I will take one from the front when flowers are fully open.

This one does so well in my apartment.

NYCorchidman 05-26-2012 03:49 PM

Here's a shot from the front of the plant.

camille1585 05-27-2012 05:45 AM

So cute!! Nice that it spikes again so soon after blooming, you get to enjoy lots of blooms on this one! I missed this thread when you first posted, but I think I was on vacation then.

NYCorchidman 05-27-2012 09:57 AM

Oh, sounds great! I hope you had a nice time off. :)

I think I'm going on a vacation soon. I'm thinking of Hawaii and then end up visiting some orchid nurseries and bring back lots of cuties.

This is the first orchid that bloomed again with the same number of flowers as when first bought. usually orchids tend to have less flower counts under my care. well, it's less than ideal so what can I say? :)

The older spike grew longer and longer producing more and more flowers, but then I just got too tired and it seemed to have a short break, so I just cut it off.

This new spike started to come out before I cut off the old one. it started out quite skinny so I thought I would have just a few, but it has 9!
The spike is still vey skinny at the base and then thicker throughout the rest, yet requires no staking.

I see this same mini phal at grocery stores around the city now, and some are larger with more flowers.
I like this one because it does so well here. no sign of new leaf yet but new roots got going.
