Meet my babies :)

This is Peanut my Black Headed Caique. He's only 10 inches long but has the ego of an eagle!

and Poppy my Red Sided Eclectus hen who simply sits there looking stunning :) I'll get her a husband in a few months.

Beautiful birds. Are they talkers?

Kelo 08-12-2011 03:16 PM

Oh yes! LOL Peanut talks like there's no tomorrow. Never stops. People think that you have to sit for weeks on end repeating phrases over and over. Not true. They hear something once and BAM! it sticks lol. Peanut has acquired two undesirable phrases - not from me I hasten to add - and precisely when you don't want him to say them it's all that he says! :D

Poppy, on the other hand or is it mouth, is a true lady and minds her p's n q's! :)

Funny! Brings back memories...When I was a kid my neighbor was trying to teach her minah bird to greet her husband, Bob. She'd sit for hours saying "Hello Bob", but the bird refused to repeat the phrase. One day my dad, George, went over for a visit. When he knocked the neighbor yelled for him to come on in and when he did her bird said, "Hello George".

LOL! Typical! Mynah birds in Europe cost a small fortune now - maybe around $1,500 - $2,000+.

Wow! How times have changed.

Kelo 08-12-2011 03:47 PM

I think they're on the CITES register now. Used to cost next to nothing too lol.

SOOO CUTE!!!!! I would LOVE to have birds again! Maybe one day . . .

Vibrant colors!

Kelo 08-12-2011 06:53 PM

Here's a pic of a true pair of Eclectus. There are about 12 subspecies. Biologists originally thought they were two separate species and you'll see why. there are minor/major variances in colour but every subspecies has the same basic colour! they are the only parrot you can tell the sexes solely by their colours. :)

Wow! Both your birds are gorgeous! Don't think I've ever seen one like Poppy. She's divine with her pretty blue eyeliner. ;) I've seen plenty of African Greys and Yellow Headed Amazons, even a small pair of Specticaled (not amazons). Poppy is something else!

I read in another thread that you have sold most of your birds. Are these your keepers?

Kelo 08-12-2011 07:14 PM

Peanut and Poppy are going nowhere! lol No amount of money would make me part with them. I'll miss the others badly but it's for their sake that they're going.

beezermommy 08-12-2011 08:40 PM

:hello

My daughter has a male eclectus. He is also gorgeous.

beautiful babies!

Kelo 08-13-2011 08:38 AM

Thank you! :)

What beautiful birds! It's amazing how many people think that parrots just mimick. I had a hand raised Blue fronted Amazon, and I can tell you that they learn language just like a child does. Even my tiny Pacific blue parrotlett is pretty good at comunicating. He says "sleep, sleep!" when he wants to be covered at night.

Kelo 08-14-2011 03:57 AM

LOL yes, you have to watch what you say. I used to have Parrotlets too and bred quite a few. They do like to nip! lol

Vanda lover 08-14-2011 10:16 AM

Mine used to nip in the begining, but I handle him the same time every day and he's real sweet now. He is 10 years old, and they mellow as they age.
