Free to good home in US!
Hi Everyone! I have a few to many orchids and I don't seem to have enough room for them all under my grow lights and I don't have enough time to adequately water them all. So I am offering several Dendrobiums free to good homes but I ask that you please pay for shipping. I can ship them potted or bareroot, your choice. Not sure how much shipping will be but I am sure I could at least get them in a larger sized flat rate box. I have pictures of the plants (no bloom picturs) if you would like to see them just let me know. Like I said I don't have time to give them the attention these poor babies need and they are not in the best of conditions....but some really aren't that bad. So if you love dendrobiums like I do, then this is a score for you! Here is my list with notes/details:
1. Den. Burana Crystal – three new growths – did not repot when acquired in October/November 2010 3. Den. NOID (received out of bloom so the color is a surprise) – Needs TLC…new growth developed rot and had to cut back, but new growth growing from other new growth. Repoted in 4 inch square pot when acquired 4. Den. NOID (received out of bloom so the color is a surprise) – No leaves but has an active eye about to start growing. Also has a basil keiki with roots and stem just starting to grow. Repotted in a 4 inch square pot when acquired in Oct/Nov 2010. 5. Den. Salaya Candy – in spike on newest growth, roots establishing well from newest growth Repotted in 4 inch pot when acquired in Oct./Nov. 2010. 6. Den. HI 306 White – new growth and roots establishing well. Did not repot when acquired in October/November 2010. 7. Den. Woo Leng ‘Short’ – did not repot when aqcuired, new growth with new roots just starting, has back bulb that needs removed due to it turning yellow brown from base and moving up. 8. Dendrobium kingianum – potted in 2-inch plastic pot, three growth keiki, roots well established. 9. Dendrobium Copper Queen. Small keiki division in a 2-inch plastic pot. Needs some TLC! P.S.....hope it is ok with the Mods that I am not posting this in the Classified section....if it is a problem let me know please! Also I forgot to mention that I am not sure if I can ship these this week, shipping would be via priority mail, due to me being un-orginized and I still need to find boxes and all that fun stuff. Sorry to be so un-orginized...it took me a month just to put them up on here as free...lol. Since Monday is a holiday I can see what I can find for boxes on Tuesday but would hate to ship via priority mail past Tuesday since priority mail is not guaranteed to be delivered by a certain time! |
Becca, I sent you a PM. Thanks for your offer and generousity.

I am so glad the kingianum went right away. I have been trying to be good and that would have broken my will.

becca, you can go to the usps.com site, and search thru the priority mail supplies, and find free boxes of several sizes.....i use the shoe box size for most orchids, and there are the 'tubes' for mailing longer plants....they are all free!!! gl

:hello Thank you for the generous offer. I also would be interested. Let me know how you will be sending, what you will be sending and how much it will cost. Thanks.:bowing
|
Well as I was afraid...I brought home the largest flat rate boxes I could find and the dendrobiums are either to tall, or to wide, or both all at the same time for the flat rate box....so I am still searching for boxes to use...I have some stashed away that I will see if I can use, I just want to avoid having to buy boxes if possible. I think the rate would be pretty similar to the flat rate boxes for priority mail shipping since that is the rate used for the flat rate boxes are as well. My goal is to have the orchids packaged Sunday night and get them out the door Monday.
|
Thats too bad, Becca. Not even the tubes would work? Well whatever you have to lay out, you will be reimbursed. And Thank You so much for the extra effort on your part.
Tony |
I didn't see any tubes available at my store but I'm not so sure they would work. I recently received an item in a tube and thought I would reuse it for shipping....and unless the orchid is growing straight up it won't work, and these dendrobium canes grow more at an upward angle to make everything difficult for me to ship...lol.
|
Becca, do not add extra pressure on yourself. You are being very generous and we are all the beneficiaries. Don't stress over it.
|
Becca, you may not be aware of this but if you go to the USPS.com site and register, you can print, pay and send Priority mail packages and save on the postage. And if you spend a few $$ at a local office supply store, they have self-adhesive labels for this specific purpose. I use it all the time and it is great. It also helps if you have a scale to weight the packages so you can apply the correct postage. Then just setup a pickup at your door... no need to even go to the post office. Also, flat rate may not necessarily be the cheapest shipping method. You can calculate postage at the Postal website.

Becca - is there anything left?? I am new around here and do not know how to post a PM. But, let me know. Thanks.
|
I have the same question!

Well I am embarrased to say that I haven't found any free boxes yet to fit the 'chds. Tubes won't work because some of the growths have grown at angles or else they are too tall.....I'll probably have to go to the store and buy the boxes...I'll try and get there tomorrow on my lunch hour and see what is available....I'm looking for at least one box that is 30 inches tall and 15 inches wide....another box needs to be around 25 inches tall and 15 inches wide...the remaining won't have to be as tall or wide...but I just thought I would let everyone know what I am dealing with...lol. Thanks for being patient with my everyone!

Eeek...well I have everything packed...but due to the box sizes priority mail is not an option. For a box under 3 pounds and dimensions of 22" x 10" x 13" usps.com wanted about $23.00! So I have opted for fed-ex ground which quoting me a 4 day delivery time for just over $10.00...my problem with this is that the orchids will sit on a hot truck via fed-ex ground, unlike Priority Mail which is flown by plain I do belive...I didn't think of this until after I just sent out the PM's with the cost of shipping to the individuals receiving the orchids....what to do? Ship em and see if they make it ok? I have to be at Fed-ex in an hour or the packages won't make the cut for the day and shipping tomorrow would probably put them being delivered on Monday...which would be extra time sitting on a hot truck.
|
Oh well, maybe next time. Thanks anyway for the offer.

so any not spoken for?

You should PM them back with the corrections and ask them if they would be willing to pay the $23 or whatever to get them in 1 to 2 day shipping.
Personally, if it's a plant I would really want then I wouldn't mind since they aren't paying you for the plant itself. I know when I purchase from Andy's Orchids or other places, the shipping will be 15 to 20 by itself, so what you're saying is not unreasonable. They do 2nd day Air and I think Next Day is like 25 or so. |
Nothing left over at this time.
@ Paul, Andy's Orchids get's pretty good discounts for the volume they ship, that is why the prices are higher for an individual to ship. I have contacted everyone in regards to the shipping. The plants aren't really anything super special so I guess in my eyes I don't see paying $30.00 worth the orchid! |
Hi Everyone, I just wanted to let everyone know that previously it was asked if any of my free dendrobiums were unspoken for, and at the time there were not, but due to weather releated shipping issues (extreme heat in the Eastern and Midwestern US) to Florida, I still have some left. So unfortunately I have to be selective now due to the extreme heat pretty much anywhere East of me, I'm in Idaho and the package is to large to ship via priority mail so I was going to ship it via fed-ex ground. If I remember correctly the box I have ready to go is around 14.50 (not including the box but I will eat the box cost) and that was going to Florida so I wouldn't think it would be any more to ship to any states to the west of me or perhaps closer East but not in area's having extreme heat right now! So there is just one condition, I have 4 of the Dendrobiums in this box and I do not want to unpack them, so it is an all or nothing deal and this is what is in the box:
1. Den. Burana Crystal – three new growths – did not repot when acquired in October/November 2010 2. Den. NOID – Needs TLC…new growth developed rot and had to cut back, but new growth growing from other new growth. Repoted in 4 inch square pot when acquired 3. Den. NOID – No leaves but has an active eye that thinks it wants to do something. Also has a basil keiki with roots and stem just starting to grow. Repotted in a 4 inch square pot when acquired in Oct/Nov 2010. 4. Den. HI 306 White – new growth and roots establishing well. Did not repot when acquired in October/November 2010. If you live in a state where I can ship to that the orchids wouldn't have to pass through areas of extreme heat in the back of a semi-truck please send me a pm if you are interested. I would really like to get these babies shipped out tomorrow, no later then Wednesday because they have been packed in a box since last Tuesday. Sorry for not being able to ship to those out East! And I already contacted sailortom2 last Friday who had previously inquired if any were left but I have not heard back from him so I must move on to the next available home! Thanks for being understanding and patient with weather related shipping issues! |
Bump Bump! Anyone? I'll bring them to work today just incase someone is interested in them...please feel free to send me a private message with your address for a quote on the shipping if interested! On Thursday, I'm unpacking them and putting them outside in our dry upper 90 and 100 degree weather...and that's a threat...lol!
|
Last call! Wish the weather would cooperate for ground shipping for those over in the Eastern part of the US...I am not happy! I really don't want to have to unpack these four!
|
I would love to help you out, Becca, but I am in the middle of the heat wave and have no room to boot. We have been dealing with heat indexes in the 110 plus range. The kingys are doing well inside though.
|
Wish I could take your offer, but we're also in the middle of the heat wave. Hope they find a home soon!
|
Thanks you two! That heat is exactly why I can't ship your direction! Poohy!
@Paul, I looked up your temps before reposting the package as available...wish it could have worked out! |
Is the heat wave everywhere? It will be 92 here today and 97 tomorrow and the house gets a few degrees warmer by day's end.
Becca, I hope you find homes for your plants. Doing the same though I won't mail them--too expensive. I gave a bunch of phals away at an orchid society meeting and I have a few friends/family that seem interested in the last two, a phal and a sharry baby. Our orchid society will have plant auctions twice a year and I am going to take full advantage of these in the future. Good luck! Leafmite |
No the heat wave seems to be mainly in the Midwest and Eastern part of the US. The Western part doesn't seem to have such extreme temperatures right now. I tried giving them away to my local orchid society members, but our society isn't that large, and most of them do not have the room or growing conditions for dendrobiums!
|
Ok...well I didn't have any takers where I could ship to so I unpacked the poor things when I got home. Some slight damage from being boxed up so long but nothing major! Now I need to get some hangers so I can hang them in the tree's outside for the summer!
|
I would've taken them bit it's to darn hot here!!
You can call me Bob ;) |
I wish I'd checked here sooner. I'm up in the TriCities, WA area and no heat wave here. Would've loved to have had those 'chids.
