Must......not.....buy!

The internet is the devil! I am sitting here at work trying to talk my self out of purchasing a few nice Brassocatleya's I have found.......must...not...buy.....the shelf is to full and finance will choke me....lol.

Flowers 06-27-2007 02:07 PM

If there is more wall, there can be more shelves :).

cb977 06-27-2007 02:39 PM

Becca, you're gonna have to rethink your living arrangements ;)

ladyslipper 06-27-2007 03:17 PM

Before my husband died, i would tell him that the orchid followed me home.....i don't think he believed me although I don't know why? Now that I am on my own, I am trying (trying) to be selective. (its sooo HARRRD!)
regards, m

Dorothy 06-27-2007 04:13 PM

First the bed, now the ?kitchen? bathroom? .. there is always some place for another orchid! ;) :coverlaugh:
Make them minis, Becca .. then you can get even more!!! :yikes:

Gin 06-27-2007 04:44 PM

Oh live it up , I have a habit of not getting something I really want as an in bloom Paph. lowii 3 years ago , still kicking myself .
I did buy a seedling might bloom next year (sigh) Gin

caseydoll 06-27-2007 05:37 PM

Oh Becca, you're just like me! I just bought 3 orchids on ebay last week and that was after I was already waking up in the middle of the night having panic attacks about where to put the ones I already have! I tell myself after each one that this will be the last but it hasn't worked yet. My boyfriend told me that the other day when he was walking through the living room he stopped, looked around and thought "we are living in a jungle!". The bad part is that I have just as many regular houseplants as orchids and those keep getting bigger. I need to join a support group! :yikes:

Sarah

Gin 06-27-2007 05:54 PM

My name is gin I am an orchidholic  There is no 12 step program . Just a one step program buy buy buy :cheer: ...

caseydoll 06-27-2007 06:22 PM

Good one Gin! That's exactly what I was afraid of! This definately wouldn't be the support group to join if someone wanted to stop buying, too many enablers!! That's why I love it here....

Sarah

Becca 06-27-2007 06:23 PM

Gin you are horrible! LOL. I agree with Sarah, there needs to be a support group for those of us you just can't control ourselves!

KC Wong 06-27-2007 08:48 PM

All of us here are just like drug addict. don't know when to stop and how to stop. There is always an urge to drop by the store telling yourself just to see whats new but end up buying. ha!!!! Ha!!!!!

Regards
KC

Oh my gosh Gin...that's the best...knew there was no hope for any of us...It's great isn't it.

Started with two, 95+ 6x8 room, 2 yrs later, eyeing the dining room , the best part about having so many is you can slide that "just one more" in with the other one's and who is gonna know:evil:

Go ahead buy buy buy :bananaslide:

LizT 06-27-2007 10:01 PM

Hi all - long time no input:yawn: too much work & not enough time. Any way onward. I'm sorry to say but once bitten there is no cure:_( Because of room constraints  I choose minis. Now for the bad news: even though I've been having problems with my plants (no one knows whats going on sample leaf being sent to Ag center) I still come home once a week with a new plant. Then there was the sale:evil: my poor brother is stuck with all the new plants till I fix my problem. So the moral of the story is just don't get started:scratchhead: Luckily for me I'm not looking for the cure nor the 12 step. I'm looking for a more appropriate place for my plants:drool:
Typical just when I get on it's time for bed:((

allaKAZAAM 06-27-2007 10:15 PM

Oh god...!...!

What have I got myself into?

There's no cure????
If that's so, then I might as well go with a HUGE :D on my face. 'Cause I don't plan on finding a cure (unless it is getting my Vanilla Planifolia to bloom and getting pods..then making all sorts of goodies!).
I too make excuses to goto floral shops (very limited on where I can get orchids in my area. WHICH is my ONLY saving grace!).

Also since I found this site, it is MY conclusion that I have FOUND a support group...HERE!
Though you ALL seem to want to support the acquisition of getting more orchids...and it is a FANTASTIC group of people here.

Alla - I agree 100% - there are a great number of good peoples here who have a passion and love that is shared! How great is that! There are worse things we can spend our money on and be addicted to ..
For a good laugh . The Orchid Humor link attached below has ancedotes everyone on this board can relate to.
Page 1 is funny definitions and page 2 is 'Definitions of an Orchid Addict' - it had me giggling :coverlaugh:

cupcake 06-29-2007 02:19 PM

 Over here we have a saying, Life is to short to stuff a mushroom!:D Now I have adapted this several ways, Life is too short to pass up an orchid, Life is too short not to treat yourself to an orchid, Life is too short to deprive yourself of an orchid,Life is too short tomiss an orchid. And to husband's, would you rather have an empty space or an orchid and a happy wife!
I went to see an orchid grower on our uk board last week, he'd been to Peterboro. He'd paid $80 for an orchid I'd never heard of, but he was made up with it and said he hadn't told his wife how much it cost! I told him to keep it on a need to know basis! He gave me 4 plants bless him! " days later he had ( inches of rain in the bottom of the greenhouse because of local flooding! The plants are ok and his house just escaped!
Orchid folk are the best in the world! Judi:cheer:

Sure there is a 12 step program. Just buy a new orchid each month. There are 12 months to a year. Worry about next year when it comes. LOL I'm here surfing the net for July's new orchid. Husband is buying me a new bakers rack for the patio. It's his fown fault he gave me a Christmas present of an "Orchid a Month" I get to choose it. If it's little I get 2.
Enjoy them while you can!!!
Lorraine

really gin all you really need is a really good friend and you will have orchids being delivered at least once a month from santa

Lin 06-29-2007 06:02 PM

Give it up, you don't stand a chance. We just enable each other to buy more.

Why else do we post pictures.....to get everyone to  and add to a 'must have' list.

luckygrower 07-03-2007 01:20 AM

I agree with all of you, my answer was to build a green house in the back yard and bring in only the flowering orchids and put the on the dining table, well the table got crowded, then the wife made me build a sun room next to the kitchen, that is getting full, I hope I don't have to buy a larger house.

Gladys47 07-03-2007 10:16 AM

My mother is here visiting. I want to take her to Clown Alley Orchids to visit the green house. She doesn't grow orchids but would be so very easy to convert. ;} Trouble is, I am so very afraid to take myself there. Maybe I could leave my wallet at home and make her promise to not loan me any money. Life is hard. Gladys

Dorothy 07-03-2007 12:01 PM

:coverlaugh: Let her buy you an orchid as she falls into the abyss known as orchid mind control :coverlaugh:

Ross 07-03-2007 01:21 PM

Just had a long discussion with Harry (Andy's brother at Andy's Orchids) and he made an interesting observation - If anyone thinks this hobby is expensive try Racing Cars where a blown engine might set you back $4000 or more. I countered with try offshore "cigarette" boat racing, where to fill the tank once will cost you over 4 or 5 thousands bucks. Now, does a measily couple hundred on orchids sound like a lot? Nope - but where do I put them :scratchhead: :hmm

Mike Davis 07-03-2007 01:28 PM

My house is soon to be overrun with orchids, i say i boot my roomie to make more room lol:lol:

Dorothy 07-03-2007 02:12 PM

:hmm
Mike - You might want to consider making your place an orchid sanctuary and charge people to see your plants. This way you can make the money up you would get from your now ex-roomie :coverlaugh:

OR, I'm serious now, you could put on an addition, convince the roomy (in my case wifey) that we need a full basement under the addition, epoxy the walls and floor, add drain for water, add tons of T5's, add beaucoup orchids... get it?

Dorothy 07-03-2007 02:46 PM

and the wheels grind with ideas of orchid evils
