A Gaming Thread

Following on from comments on the 'Username?' thread, here's a place where all you gamers out ther can talk about your favs, what your playing now, what you'd recommend etc.

The original comments were related to the Final Fantasy games, so we could start there - what's your favourite FF, and why? who's your favourite summon/ aeon? who's your favourite FF character? and, what other RPGs have you played and like?

C'mon, I know I'm not the only computer/ RPG geek out there on the baord! ;)

PS - just for info, I am a real member - this is not spam so please don't report me to Rosie or Marty!!

I play (or should say "used to play" since I have been two months now offline) World of Warcraft.
I have a level 85 warlock and command demons etc, etc...
My character's name is: Mypreciouss

RosieC 04-05-2011 02:53 PM

I used to play a range of PC games, but then orchids took over and I find less time for it (I'm usually reading OB at the times I used to play).

I prefer turn based games (my old brain needs time to think :coverlaugh:). I still play Sims3, I also have in progress games in Heros V which I go back to ocasionally. I also go back on a semi-regular basis to the Civilisation still must be my favourite that one.

Jennyfleur 04-05-2011 03:09 PM

I admit, I've never played Sims or Warcraft! Of the two, warcraft appeals to me more, but I do prefer using consoles to a laptop/ desktop, I find it much more relaxing!

Probably the best game I've ever played is an RPG for the super Nintendo called 'Terranigma'. I was lucky to get it as the guys in the shop I used to go to kept it to one side for me when one arrived from a trade-in :)

Since then, I've really enjoyed Alundra 1 (Alundra 2 wasn't as challenging!) for the PS1 and the Broken Sword trilogy for the PS1 and PS2 and, currently, I'm addicted to the Fire Emblem game on the Wii.

I have to say, I make it sound as if I'm always on there! My other half likes gaming as well (when he has some relaxing time at home, so we can understand each other in that sense). I used to play a lot more as a type of therapy but I don't have nearly as much time or energy for playing as I used to - the price of growing up and having 1001 other things to do I guess!

For FF XIII, my favorite character is Hope, along with his eidolon Alaxander. I like FF XIII for its' storyline best, and I have not finished it yet, so NO spoilers! From FF XII, my favorite character would deffinitely be Baltheir, and the summon Exodus! The best thing about the game is it sheer length and amount of sidequests, I had a game that was 115 hours of playtime and not even close to done! Another good RPG is Tales of Symphonia for the GC, and Skies of Arcadia for the DreamCast/GC. I played through Tales of Symphonia about eight times!

Rex Anglorum 04-05-2011 03:34 PM

Nope, you're not the only computer game geek on this board. Not by a longshot.

Back in the day I played the original Everquest for about 4 years when it came out in 1998, Everquest II, and then WoW for the last 3. I cranked my toons up to 80 but got bored before the launch of Cataclysm and stopped.

Currently I'm leveling 2 toons in Everquest II and having a blast with the "Empire" and "Napoleon" editions of Total War when I don't feel like being social.

Civilization V looks great, but I've yet to pull the trigger and get it. I'm trying to stay away from new addictions!

Hee hee, no spoilers from me! I haven't got an Xbox and I decided to get a Wii instead of a PS3, so I can't actually play it! I will sound quite 'girly' in that one of my favourite FFs was the X2 that they brought out as a continuation of the X storyline. I did like the way it was structured and it was nice to have a female as the main character (on games that used to ask for you to 'input' your name at the start, I always used to call myself Jack as it was less embarrassing when they had the dialogue between the hero and his love during the story!! As a result, my nickname was Jack all through school)

Also, just for info, my favourite 'summon' on FF has always been 'Shiva'

Has anyone played any of the Suikoden games? I have a couple and still kick myself that I ended up a couple of characters short of the full set!! Something else to try again when I have more time

PS Rex Anglorum, I knew I wasn't alone ;)

OOO! You will LOVE this game if you have played any of the previous ones! The whole way you play out the game has been changed a little, but it is SUPER easy to grasp it in a few hours!

RosieC 04-05-2011 04:52 PM

Oooh, I'd not actually realised there was a new Civilisation. I'm still playing Civ IV. Our store has very few PC games these days and I don't play console ones and never saw this one.

I've loved every version of Civilisation since I played the first version. I also loved Alpha century which was made by Sid Meier when he split from Maxis/EA after Civ II. They owned the the right to the Civ name so he based it on having achieved the Civ goal of getting to Alpha centruy and setting up a new Civilisation there. I didn't like the Maxis/EA game that they as a sequal at the same time as Sid Meier did AC (I think it was called Civ Call to Power). Then they got back together again and released Civ III and IV and I played and loved them all.

So... will I love Civ V. It has Sid Meiers name on it and that has been a good sign in the past for these games. I think there is only one way to find out... :coverlaugh:

I enjoyed WoW Cataclysm very much....the new quest lines and the changes in Azeroth specifically.
I just can't play enough to "get ahead" though and I too am bored with it.
My kids play WoW and raid etc and I am in the guild as a "courtesy" so I have friends when I do occasionally log on.
It does not take long to level a toon from 80 to 85 imo as I find the new storylines for questing really coolz so time flies by

definitely not a gamer. My extent of gaming is a couple silly facebook games and this:

Amnesias FlightSimX Paperplane Game

as for my 67 year old neighbor he plays WOW and has 4 different characters max'ed out.

We have two PCs which are suitable for gaming and a PS3 complete with the full Move thing for 2 people.

My GF actually likes playing games more than I do, I think...! :)

I've always loved RTS games, but in the days before online play. I'm one of those annoying turtle people who sit in the base, build up and build up and like 2-3 hours later, wait for all the resources to run out, thrash everything on the screen with an enormous force... :)

The original Starcraft was bloody good; starcraft II is also fun. I hate buying a game only to find they've basically decided online play is where it's at - I like a bit of a story line to a game rather than just "ooh, shiny graphics, now let me start FRAGGING!". Before that I spent far too much of my teenage life playing Wing Commander: Privateer (we figured out how to "hack" the save games with a hex editor and gave ourselves lots of money), Dune II (which pretty much started the whole RTS thing), Command and Conquer and then Red Alert. I also spent hundreds of hours playing Sim City 2000 and Transport Tycoon, where I took immense joy in building diagonal rail tracks (which can't be crossed) wherever a competitor was trying to build anything, forcing them out of business and monopolising everything. muhahahaha. You then started pulling in silly money and could do things like create entire map-spanning rail tunnels for several tens of millions at a pop and hardly notice the change in your bank balance. I even went to the extreme of creating an absolutely flat multi-level map so I could tunnel across the map in several directions without needing crossroads.

We spent Valentine's Day the year before last killing zombies together in Resident Evil 5. :D

I've never really liked RPGs; they tend to be too slow (and the idea of a real world RPG like D&D fills me with instant boredom. Plus, dice hate me).

I also quite like games like Tropico (sim city: dictator edition).

Ahh, the folly of youth :D

I agree that some RPGs can be very tedious at times (I usually pride myself on finishing games but 'Arc: twilight of the spirits' was just interminable!!) - the best are those which have a good blend between puzzles, fights and not extended periods of downtime while the story plays out. I always wanted to play D&D with my brother and his friends growing up but, because I was a few years younger, they never let me join in :( I think I'm still scarred from that! I used to make up for it though by reading/ playing these:
List of Fighting Fantasy gamebooks - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

.... ok ok, I admit it, I still do read/ play these! :blushing:

Discus 04-06-2011 06:50 AM

Heh :) My GF keeps telling me I'd enjoy D&D - I've briefly observed enough of it (with different DMs) that it looks like a snorefest.

Morrowind: The Elder Scrolls. ZOMG. Teh_Slow! Damn, I forgot that thing over there. *cue 50 minutes of real time just walking*. Drat, that wasn't it! *cue more walking*. rinse, repeat.

My most fav and most played game was FFXI. I had a "Tarutaru" white mage/ summoner named "Dashka". I played it at least 3 years. Then I switched to WOW for sometime. Then I tried Guildwars... Eventually I gave up online gaming as it was taking a lot of my time. I've played few PS3 games lately. The most recent is Heavy Rain with Move. I like it.

fishmommy 04-14-2011 01:40 AM

FairyInTheFlowers 04-20-2011 10:45 PM

Well, I thought I would say that I rapped FF13. . . . IT WAS FLIPPEN AWESOME! If you are thinking of getting this, and you like the FF series, GET IT! I was in my opinion the best FF EVER! AND, there is a FF13 2 coming out! I want it!!!!!

fishmommy 04-20-2011 10:53 PM
