Hi Everybody and Happy New Year!
Just wanted to show my Phrag. Sorcerer's Apprentice. It has been blooming since early summer with 20 blooms so far and at least 2 more buds. It has grown very easily in S/H in south window in my home. It is over 6 feet tall!

at the risk of sounding repetitive.. WOW!

CTB 12-30-2010 03:08 PM

What made it grow so large?, I don't grow prags., just unbelieveable, good growing! How old is it?

bellini girl 12-30-2010 03:11 PM

That's an awesome specimen...6 ft tall? I'd heard Phrags grew lots but that's simply amazing

Bolero 12-30-2010 03:47 PM

I haven't seen the stem that long before but I've heard of it happening. I don't think it is anything to do with the media it's growing in though.

Either way it's impressive.

Thanks Carol,
I almost killed it at first but it has but it has recovered from one small growth to the plant in the picture. It has taken around 2 years. This is it's first flowering. It has a new growth that is almost mature. Can't wait to see what happens next. Deb

Could you post the conditions that you grew this under. It would be most appreciated.

I have one that I bought as a seedling about 5 years ago. I'm hoping it blooms this year. I used to grow most of my plants in SH, but media is difficult to buy here on Vancouver Island. No one even has Spagnum!

Hi Donald,
I bought this phrag about 4 years ago and promptly tried to kill it. I repotted into Hydro-stone (s/h) about 3 years ago and haven't repotted since. Since it has recovered from near death it has been very happy. I grow it in or near a south window in normal house conditions. I water it enough to keep it standing in water, maybe every 4 or 5 days. I use our well water which thankfully my orchids like. I feed with fertilizer manufactured by Green Care Fertilizers which I distribute under the name of The Crystal Jungle. You can visit their website to view the label or let me know and I will send you a copy. I feed about once every 3 or 4 months although to tell the truth I can't remember when I fed it last. I flush it with water occasionally. This is basically how I grow all my orchids except the mounted ones and some that require a rest. Any more ?'s I will be glad to answer. Thanks for your interest. Deb

I grew in SH quite a bit, but I may not have used the best brand. It tended to dry out at the surface quite a lot, which made me worry that they weren't getting enough water. I misted the surface often. For the most part, they grew well in SH
I don;t think it would be easy to find here, and would be expensive to ship.

OH MY GOOD GRACIOUS! That is INCREDIBLE!

Vanda lover 01-02-2011 11:35 AM
