Neat. One of my favorites. Mine is in full bud now. It has five buds this year. A record for me. Can't wait!

I just bought a young one of these - it is about 10 inches tall. I have mine under T-5 lights now for the winter. How old were yours when they started to bloom? How tall did it get?

Thanks

Frank

Frank, mine was about the size of yours when it started blooming. The new growth is about 13 inches tall. Don't know for sure if it gets any taller.

Are these hard to grow or require anything different than most cattleyas? I see they get rather tall? But i have several catts that are rather tall too.

tuvoc 10-24-2010 03:28 PM

silken, I find it very easy to grow with my catts. However, I don't let it dry out too much.

One of my favorites. Thank you for sharing! Is this plant compact at all?

silken 10-24-2010 08:52 PM

Thanks for the info tuvoc. I have been considering one of these for a while.

Thanks for all the comments! These Epicattleyas have not been hard for us to grow under bright lights with daily, light watering. They are at least 12" tall with 3 growths when they develop buds, and this particular one is now 30" tall with the blooms!! A real stunner for the collection.

Hi Mike!

There is a Northwest Orchid Society show and sale coming up at Swanson's Nursery on November 6th and 7th. The next show in Seattle will be the Northwest Flower and Garden from Feb. 23 - 27.

Happy growing!
Sadie and Brian

I have one of these I just bought - it is small and probably has a year before it will flower so I want to maximize its growth.

Do you fertilize with each watering like some suggest for other orchids ? I am using MSU type at 125 ppm N on my phals and cattleya

For "light watering" do you mist it?

Thanks.

Frank

Hi Frank,

We fertilize once per week with the same strength as the rest of our Catts -- your fertilization should be just fine while it is growing.

Our light watering is a quick splash on the roots with a hose. Our humidity is about 60%.

We continue to water and fertilize as the buds are developing and then cut back a little when the buds get fat and while the blooms are open.

Good luck!
Sadie and Brian

Stunner it is, but sounds like it will have to wait until I've got my own place!!!
Great growing, and thanks again for sharing!
