Encyclia species
 

I have been on a Encyclia species kick lately and tring to post on forums to trade or buy but i have had very little luck i was woundering do people really grow Encyclia species much anymore because i don't even see pic of them on this and other forums.

I'm afraid that growing species in general is becomming less common (which is a shame). Encyclia is my main orchid family. They have one problem though they are slow growers. So if you want to extend you collection you have look more to traders then hobby growers. I know that there is a fair numbers of species available from Brasil and most European growers will sell some Encyclia's.

I have a couple of the species: Encyclia phoenicea and alata. But are great plants, but they take up a lot of space (especially the alata), which is why I've limited myself to only these two. I think the plants from this genus are beautiful, however, and if I had the space for them I would have a great deal more. I much prefer species to hybrids anyway (and I've yet to see any encyclia hybrids that look any better than the species).

I agree steve if you ever can take a division of any of those i would love that i'm sure i could find some thing you might want in my cluster of orchids.

Eric, I got my Encyclia alata from Odom's Orchids (Florida) last spring. It's still listed on their website if you're interested in purchasing a flowering-size plant. Their description says that the plants are huge, and I can personally attest that they aren't kidding. I received a plant with four older growths (all fully leafed) and three new growths with spikes emerging. The entire plant, measured from the base of the plant (not the pot) to the top of the tallest leaf was close to three feet high (and for $50 that, to me, was a steal). But if you get one, just remember to be prepared to give it a lot of space. The Enc. phoenicea I found on Ebay last summer (they usually appear on a regular basis from growers in Florida). Both plants' blooms (especially the phoenicea's) smell great.

Encyclia species
 

I just bought an E. phoenicia a couple of weeks ago. The plant isn't terribly big, but the 2 spikes are tall and it smells so good. And, for med/small flowers, they are pretty. I got mine from a local grower: Clown Alley Orchids in Pasadena TX. I wouldn't be surprised if he has other Encyclias too.

Clown Alley Orchids does carry several Encyclia species and hybrids. They're great folks with nice plants.

thanks guys i was mainly looking to trade but i did look at the site and had plenty of encyclias.

WOW ...I have 2 encyclias that at their last breath. How do u get them to grow big and healthy???

Pot them in a good draining medium. I use almost pure bark of good hard quality. Let them dry between waterings like a Cattleya.

you could even put them in a net pot so the roots get more air ,but you'll have to water more.

I am sure many people are growing Encyclias, but your post was about trading/purchasing. I have 3 Encyclias but none i want to part with - I saw your post on this and other forums but didnt have reason to respond :) If you are looking to get Encyclias check the vendors sites. Many are readily available.

I didn't want anyone to part with any plants just was woundering if any one had extras or had one big enough to divide . I would rather trade if i can instead of just buy out right then two people are getting what they want . . I have plenty of plants to trade and some i'd just give out right to people . I know theres many of sites out there that sell them and i do buy. But i'm sure i'm just as tight with money as the next guy in this day and age.It like my Mama said sometimes you just have to ask to get what you want.:biggrin::biggrin::biggrin:
