2011 OrchidBoard Calendar Contest!
It's this time of the year again. Time to start the 2011 Orchid Board Calendar Contest. Hoping to turn the 2011 into a very high quality, high gloss version!
2011 calendar will be dedicated in memory of our beloved super-mod Dorothy! 2011 Calendar will consist of 13 images (1 cover and 12 for individual months). All proceeds will go toward supporting OB. We're getting a new powerful server very soon, so the funds are going to be very welcomed & needed. This was the cover of our 2010 Calendar: http://images6.cpcache.com/product/4...x350_Front.jpg Each photo will be captioned with the scientific name of the orchid and the name/username of the person who took the photo. Deadline: Sun Aug 15th, 2010 at midnight Prizes: In an effort to raise some funds for OB, Top 3 voted images will receive copies of the calendar. Please email any calendar entries to 2011@orchidboard.com You may post a sized version (not larger then 640px in width) of your image in this thread for all to see. I will select the final choices and we will vote for the cover and the 12 images together. This is always very hard. Don't forget #5 below! Contest rules. 1. Images must be submitted un-sized and at maximum available resolution. The requirements are 11.5 x 9 in. (trimmed on calendar to 11 x 8.5 in.) at 200dpi. This translates to an image 2300x1800 at 200dpi In other words the bigger the better. (template here) If needed I will size the images, please don't do it yourself. Send the original files. 2. Orientation of the Image must be 'landscape'. Portrait entries will not be considered. (See example here) 3. Once you submit an image you give orchid board the right to manipulate it/size it/crop it and alter it in any way we want in order to use it, and also re-use the image at a later time in conjunction with other Orchid Board activities. 4. Submitted image must be your own work. Plant does not have to be from your own collection. Use of other or copyrighted material will result in immediate disqualification 5. When you submit the photos please be sure to include the following information. Scientific Name: Your Real Name: Your OrchidBoard username: 6. 1 photo per member. Select your best entry and do not send more then 1 image. Previously we allowed more photos, but lets give equal chances to everyone this time 7. Please make sure the photos are free of any watermarks or text. Have FUN & GOOD LUCK! |
Woooo-hooo! Can't wait to vote! This is always fun to see all the submissions. I'll be in the running again this year.
btw, this month's calendar pic is exceptional! ;) |
Awesome!
|
Yes, we will only run it for 2 weeks, so email me your photos... I will send out a general email to get everyone on board.
|
I love my OB calendars...can't give them up :)
|
:bump:
|
This is exciting! I've never entered a photographic competition before. I think I'll have a go!:blushing:
Marion PS: Does it have to be a named orchid? So many of my orchids that are in flower are noids.:( |
I thought I heard them talk about allowing noids last year… but I do not see any mention of it in this years official rules, only the scientific names. Well I better get to work now ! Good luck to everyone.

Also I've noticed that the backgrounds are black, does OB just black out the background on our photos? Or do we have to take them against a black background?
Sorry, I'm new to anything like this. Marion |
Think I'll have a go from over the pond.
Ed |
Please read the rules and only mail the high resolution photos. Anything less than that won't be considered

Backgrounds are up to your discretion. OB does not alter them........to my knowledge. GL Al |

Yes it has to be named. Species or Hybrids are OK, but please NO NOIDS
|
alright, thanks marty!
|
I know that this is specifically not in the rules, but is there anything against entering the same photo as last year (which was not selected)?
I know that it's not very creative, but the reason I ask is because all my photos are on my external harddrive, which I left in france since it wouldn't work on american voltage. I only have a few recent orchid photos on my laptop and I don't know if any are calendar quality. |
If we have already put the name on the photo, and due to the background, could not remove it aesthetically, will that be okay?

I don't have a problem with that...if you want you can enter previous photos... not very original...but OK :)
|
Thanks Marty. Turns out that may not be necessary, I dug up a few nice orchid shots on my computer. Now I just have to decide which one I like best!
|
i just went to a friends gh and got lots o great pics! i will editing them, and then submit one. ill have a hard time picking just one though :)

we need more photos folks...a lot of the submissions are not following the rules. Please read the photo requirements, don't send thumbnails, undersized photos, portrait orientation or watermarked photos. all those will be rejected and not considered. Send the original files that haven't been sized, reduced or compressed
|
thanks marty! i will be sure to do hat when i send mine in :D im just having a hard time deciding :P
|
I'm pulling my hair out trying to decide which photo (out of 3) to send in! I'm going to do this objectively I think; Eeny, meeny, miny, moe...... :coverlaugh:
|
lol! you only have three to choose from? i have at least 6 really good ones!
|
I only have 3 to chose from, because like I said earlier, most of the pics are on my external hard drive in France! Maybe that's a good thing?
|
ahh on the hard drive lol. that should make it easier for you! im having a hard time deciding which would look best on a calendar
|
Well I've decided to enter for the first time this year. I have some nice NoID pics which arn't valid for the contest so there is only really one choice for me. I'm sure it's nowhere near the standard of other people's but I thought I would put it in anyway.
It's a pic of my Pinocchio on a rare ocasion of it having two flowers together (and one of them not being either part open or on it's way out). http://lh6.ggpht.com/_o4OXVkcS2VU/TF...7-30%20023.JPG |
thats cute! i lik it!
|
Nice Rosie, I remember you posting that one when it bloomed. :bowing A bit off topic, but is it still blooming? I know that these guys bloom sequentially for quite a while.
|
me too! i remember when you posted it when it was blooming
im still awaiting the answer from my fb friends who i asked their preference on my pics :) |
Gaagh!!
Why did I have to forget to shoot the tags at the last orchid show I was at? |
