Oncidium Sharry Baby 'Sweet Fragrance' - yet another one from Tatton Park

This was yet another orchid from my wish list. I did quite well at getting wishlist orchids from the Tatton Park Show, infact I think there was only one complete impulse buy out of eight.

This is so pretty

and the fragrance... wow! At the show Nicky told me it had a wonderful fragrance and someone else was saying 'wow what a fragrance' but I could only just detect a very faint sweetness. I couldn't detect anything last night and then this morning it was just very feint again. Then I got home at lunchtime and opened my living room door and the sweet scent just hit me. I really like it because it is not too sickly sweet, just a pleasent sweet scent arround miday and through the afternoon.

It has some massive p-bulbs and 4 new growths ranging from quite large to only just started.

It also has something which may be a new spike but I'm not at all sure. It looks like a spike but is about the same height as the others with no sign of buds forming :dunno:

Wow, they're gorgeous. I'll keep my fingers crossed and if it's a new spike you'll have to post pics when it blooms.

me wants it! lol Sharry baby is high on my wishlist, and now after your description of it and photos Iwant it even more!
It's a really large healthy plant, great pick! Who's the vendor?

nice Rosie! I got one of these last year - they do get quite large! It is a wonderful fragrance, isn't it? I found mine at a store n the middle of a bunch of other orchids - my nose led me to it ;)

Thanks everyone.

I'm not sure about choclately on the fragrance. I would describe this one as a sweet sugary smell.

Camille, I got this from David Stead Orchids who are somewhere in the UK. They do have a website which I have bought from before.

No fragrance just now, and I guess I will miss it during the day when I'm at the office, maybe I'll have to find an excuse to nip home during the day :coverlaugh:

Rosie, I think you added a great one to you're list. Beautiful sharry you've picked up
These are fast growers that love their water and lots of light.

Right now mine has, 4 new growths, 4 loooong spikes. It took about a week before the intense scent of chocolate would appear, before that - a sweet sugar scent filled the room.

Enjoy you're new orchid :)

There's an easy solution: bring it to work!

Actually I did come home at lunch time and it was smelling wonderful

Gloria, I did actually start to detect a chocolate scent today, although my hubby thinks it smells more like Jelly Beans.

camille1585 06-07-2010 02:20 PM

Yummy, jelly beans.... That's not a bad scent either!

RosieC 06-07-2010 02:23 PM

I agree

We've found a new source of Jelly Belly here in the UK... our local garden center sells them! You can't get them as easily in the UK as you can in the USA but Jelly Belly are by far the nicest jelly beans when you can find them.
