Not my pet but close enough!

I spent a good portion of my morning watching this through my kitchen window. The plant in the hanger is a Staghorn Fern and it seems like prime real estate!

DropShots Day

Bird on swing! Thanks for sharing!

Barbara 04-26-2007 11:22 PM

That's so cute! Do you know what kind of birds they are?

We have robins nesting on top of the post of the veranda up front and mourning doves nesting in a tree at the back of the house. Maybe they like the orchids near by.

Tindomul 04-27-2007 12:22 AM

You might be creating a backyard habitat! Congrats Sue!

Hi Barbara :)
Looks like some sort of sparrow but the coloring seems wrong so I'll be doing some research...
by the way, they're back this morning!
Up close and personal...this plant is about 2 ft away from my window!

Tin, Spring Hill is part of Florida's Nature Coast with Florida Birding Trails all around us. We see many different birds flying through :)

Tindomul 04-27-2007 09:58 AM

Have you ever seen that show, backyard habitat, or something like that. It takes your backyard and turns it into a beautiful place for the owners to walk through and at the same time a habitat for wildlife, like birds, amphibians, fish, reptiles and even some mammals.

Sounds like great prospects!

Barbara 04-27-2007 03:24 PM

I was wondering if it could be some kind of wren with that upturned tail. Nothing like we have around here though.

cb977 04-27-2007 08:30 PM

Thanks Barbara :)
I did a little wren research and I found this:

All About Birds

The bird looks exactly like this but the sound is different...at least the sound it was making yesterday is.

Thanks for the hint, it helped

Shadow 04-28-2007 04:30 AM

Yesterday I saw a magpie. It was singing like a whole flock of different birds at the same time. I know it can imitate different birds, but I didn't know it can imitate the whole flock. May be your bird is imitating too?

Tindomul 04-30-2007 09:29 PM

Oh WOW!!!!!!!! :cheer: You really did make a habitat!! That is too cool!!!! Make more videos!!! Make more videos! Don't disturb the nest too much though. The parents might not return. How are you going to water that though?

cb977 04-30-2007 09:31 PM

I didn't touch the nest at all!
I used the zoom on the camera to get that :photo:

The Staghorn doesn't take lots of water, I just mist it once in a while with my sprayer so I can avoid the nest :)

Tindomul 04-30-2007 10:06 PM

Oh, good. That second pic the old staghorn leaves kinda looked like someones hand. :blushing:
I just think thats too cool!!!

:cheer: Check out the link below :cheer:

It's So Easy to Garden for Wildlife - National Wildlife Federation

 Maybe the National Wildlife Federation will certify your staghorn fern as a wildlife habitat !!!:Tup:

Tindomul 05-07-2007 11:30 PM

She is soo cute. Have you been able to ID the species of bird?

Tin, they are Carolina Wrens...

and the babies have arrived!!!

The thumbnail pic was taken within an hour of them hatching and the link will bring you to a video. Once you see them jump, there's not much more so you don't have to watch the whole thing ;) There will be more videos coming in the next days :D

I counted 4 or 5 eggs (didn't want to get really close to the nest) and there are a bunch of babies in there :D
We seem to have two hams right up in front of the nest :photo:

AWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!
I remember last year when I took care of a small bird that fell out of the nest, after letting him go .. the tug I felt to my heart :_( ..
I still picture little Jack Sparrow out there flying high and free. :)

Tindomul 05-29-2007 02:54 PM

Congrats Sue for helping nature make a home out of one of your plants!

cb977 05-30-2007 05:12 PM
