My Orchid Walls

People have been posting such neato projects lately that I thought I'd share mine with you all.
I started them about 6 months ago because I was tripping over many of the smaller seedlings or knocking plants over on the floor. I figured I needed to make some space, and then I got this idea...Why not make mobile walls?

So I got this silly idea I wanted them suspended from the ceiling, so that when I filled up one, I just make another. Sorta like hanging canvas from the ceiling.

Anyway I went to home depot and bought a couple prefabed shower panels. The type of thing that you use when your making the back wall waterproof. Some screws and a good deal of chain. Also some hooks for the ceiling. I built a wood frame around the back of the shower panel so it was sturdy like mounted canvas. Then screwed in the bolts and the chains on the top. It's then looked like this (excuse the working mess) :blushing:

Then glued moss all over the front and then stapled a thin netting from top to bottom to make sure the moss stays.
Then it looked like this

Then I hung it up and started putting my plants on it! It's really freed up a lot of space in my green room! I can either mount directly into the moss on the board and the roots grow into it, or I can just hang my mounts from it too.
Heres a photo of one nearly full.

So far I've only made two but they have worked pretty well thus far! The best part is they are very mobile. If they need to go outside for some reason, we just unhook them from the ceiling and carry them outside. They also lay perfectly flat so they can be placed in the back of a truck. (As you can tell im ploting for my vacation) lol

WoW DJ, very cool idea, Looks great too! You must have gone thru alot of moss

WOW! So much space! But you have only one lamp. It looks like plants at the bottom doesn't receive enough light.

Yeah, it does look like that but the image is decieving. I took the photos at night using my flash on the camera. The room that the orchid walls hang in are entirely made of glass windows except for the back wall. During the day the room is extremly bright. I have the lights above in that area more so I can see better when I'm working out there at night then anything else ;)

WoW!! Nice one. What if you used tree fern panel, much thicker substrate for your orchids. Plus I feel that you have plenty more room for at least another 50 orchids :D
Thats just me though. I know lots of people don't like to crowd their orchids.
How do you water them? Is it done automatically? Or you just hose them?

smartie2000 04-23-2007 01:54 PM

:D now that is something what will look very cool! I think you have much more room on there for more orchids ;)

How would something like this work with Cocoa-fiber mat? Just curious.

Elena 04-23-2007 03:02 PM

That's a very neat idea!

Yea, thats what I ment. I was thinking you glue that onto your slab, and then you have a nice thick humidity storing growing substrate for your epiphytes. What you have there works fine, thats what I have in my vivariums. I often wish they had more substrate to work their roots into.

I'm just spraying them when they start to go dry. I wish it was done automaticly lol. Hmm that might be the next project!

Ross and Tin,

That would be interesting to try, but I had trouble trying to find anything large enough to cover the area. Any ideas? I wonder how large tree fern slabs or other such materials can come in? I also thought epiweb too, but that might get pretty expensive.

I bought roll of cocoa fiber mat 24" wide from a local vendor and glued it into my orchidarium back with silicone adhesive. Let's see if it holds!?

Tindomul 04-23-2007 06:21 PM

My local Hydroponics store sells a roll that is 4 foot by 4 foot by 1 inch thick for $50 US.

That sounds like it would work. It won't be long enough but I could start another roll towards the bottom I guess! Thank you for the idea I will look for some

Check Google for Cocoa fiber mat and see what else is available. I found several combinations a while back, just don't remeber where. The one I bought was right for me, but you might want some other size.

How often do you need to do that?

It depends greatly on mother nature :D
Last week the weather was ugly! So I only had to spray them 2 times the whole week. This week is proving to be a bit warmer so they are drying out much faster. I'll probably end up spraying them 3-4 times this week.
