Another nice phal to my collection

Hi there Ob,

I popped into tesco's today and couldn't resist buying another phal. this is my forth now.

This one had loads of aerial roots so i wet them and teased them into the pot, also gave it some orchid focus feed, i've had really good results with that.

Very pretty plant. nice plumy/orange colouration.

I'm not an expert, but i think aerial roots are supposed to stay out of the pot. If you put them into the bark medium they may rott.

I think as they have developed to take moisture from the air that is their dedicated job. If you submerge them in medium the get/stay too moist and may die back.

But if you have done this before and had no problems, then go for it.

I'm sure others will chime in. Good luck with them!

Hi Sammy,

The roots will be fine, i didn't push them into the bark i just twisted them around the other aerial roots in the top of the pot as there are loads of them.

A couple of the really long aerial roots were snapped when i got it but most were fine.

It can be a problem for arial roots to rot in the medium, but I have found it is not a problem if they are near the top and/or still get plenty of air. I think they are more likely to rot if they are smothered and can't breath as they are used to being in the air.

One thing i'd like to get other peoples opinion on is when you guys and gals water your phals do you water the aerial roots out the top of the pot or just the ones in the medium? as i always do.

RosieC 05-05-2010 08:02 AM

If I am watering at the sink I always run water over the arial roots as well. If I'm filling the pot from a watering can, then tipping out the water a few minutes later then it again depends if I am going to the sink to empty them (if so I poor the water I'm emptying out the pot over the arial roots).

Some of mine are so used to that that the arial roots turn a lovely green when I do, other Phals that had existing arial roots don't seem to absorb as much that way but I still do it.

That's a real beauty. Good luck with it.
