Wow!! Thats one huge and happy orchid!!!!!! From this distance, to me, it could be anything with a pseudobulb. Maybe a Catt type.

justatypn 04-12-2007 06:55 PM

Wow, so huge, know what type??? When it bloomed in 2004 what color were the blooms. Definitely a old Fl home:biggrin:

Ross 04-12-2007 06:55 PM

No, Tin - look at those old flower spikes. Looks like a very large Encyclia type to me :scratchhead: :hmm

flhiker 04-12-2007 06:59 PM

If I remember correctly they were small yellow flowers, I really wasn't into orchids then.

Tindomul 04-12-2007 07:11 PM

Oh, I didn't notice those before. Good eye!!!

Djarum Black 04-12-2007 07:26 PM

Holy cow! I want to be the owner of that house just for getting the orchid in the deal! lol

smartie2000 04-12-2007 07:30 PM

Whoa that is one heavy orchid hanging there!

dave b 04-12-2007 09:24 PM

Its a Cattleya. A pic of that was posted here maybe a month or so ago. It was covered in blooms. Ill see if i can find it.

OK, i was wrong. The pic posted previously was also by you, flhiker, and was a Cat. (bowringiana??). But, different tree, location, etc.

Im too bold i guess. Id just go up and knock on the door and ask if they knew what it was. Either they too are orchid lovers, or just happened to purchase a home with monster cats growing on them.

IdahoOrchid 04-12-2007 10:50 PM

Yeah, I am DEFINATELY into mini catts now!!!!

I'd do the same! I'm sure they've had lots of folks asking about the beauty on the tree

flhiker 04-12-2007 11:34 PM

Ok I ask!

Shadow 04-13-2007 09:31 AM

Looks like one of Schomburgkias. For example, Schomburgkia crispa. Seems to me it doesn't get enough light to bloom.

Actually it looks like there are [spent?] flowers spikes on there. I'd kill for a tree like that in my yard!

In this case I'm happy that I'm not an owner of this tree.

 Wouldn't an internal courtyard with a clear roof be cool with trees in it that you could attach orchids to?

It's ok Shadow.. go ahead and do it. I won't tell anybody it'll just be out little secret ;)

flhiker 04-13-2007 04:04 PM

Ok I stopped at the house, turns out the man who started this orchid live next door, He told me that he started it 8 years ago and it would be bigger if it wasn't for hurricane Willma. He said it is not a Cattleya but couldn't remember what it was. I took a good look at it up close and it has new spikes coming out. He also told me that it blooms every Father Day. He said he will look for pictures of the flowers so I can post them.

Ross 04-13-2007 04:07 PM

I'll still bet Encyclia. Just for the record.

Shadow 04-13-2007 05:44 PM

And I'm still sure that it is Shomburkia....

IdahoOrchid 04-13-2007 06:25 PM

Well done! Looking forward to seeing the flowers on it  Was it bifolate? Did the spikes originate from the bottom of the sides of the bulbs or from the middle in the top of the growths?
