Diagnose this?
4 Attachment(s)
The underside of this phal leaf has what at first looked like "honeydew" droplets. I knew that it was something else and wiped them off with alcohol as I was worried it was eggs of some kind. Now they're back, only on this one leaf. Plant is in spike and not really sure what I have here or how to procceed

Plants sometimes secret excess sugars. If it's sweet to the taste, it's just sap. There's really nothing to do about it. Maybe grow it in slightly dimmer lighting, idk.

I have a couple of chids that do the same thing, just sap, wouldn't sweat it, but keep an eye on it for any changes.

Oh, ok. Is it strange to only be one leaf?
|
well if it's little droplets, then no worries. I call it happy sap :) It mans your plant is Happy :)

With my Phals the sap seems to show up on the older leaves rather than the newer ones, usually just the bottom 2.

Anytime I see sap on the underside of leaves I always double check for scale, or other insects that are leaving the sticky, shiny stuff behind. I clean off with insecticidal soap solution and keep a close eye on it just in case. I spray every 7 days for at least three time. If it is just 'sap' it won't hurt it but if it is some bug, it should get the life cycle as well as the exhisting bugs. I also put it in an area away from close contact with other plants so if it is a bug it will not spread as easily. Check your other plants to see if it is present as well.

All good input, thanks all.

i agree with the prevention approach....give it a shot of insecticide and keep it clean with soap....

I'm surprised nobody has asked about the leaf discoloration around the sap drops? Or is that nothing to worry about.
|
Remember to use the soap or insecticide at least three times one week apart. You need to go through at least a reproductive cycle of the bugs or you will just get the adults and not the immature bugs. If I see bugs I start with a good dose of Safer soap and drench the whole plant, top, bottom, pot and all every 7 days, three times..

Are there some little white things along with the sap? I can't quite tell from the picture. If there are, it's probably mealybug, and well worth treating. Another possibility is mites, which you might not see...
Either way, I'd probably isolate it for a while to see what happens. My favorite treatment for mites, mealies and scale is to mix isopropyl alcohol and water half and half and add a little surfactant (read: Ivory liquid). I wipe the underside of the leaves gently but thoroughly to remove any adults, and then spray the upper and undersides of the leaves until they are well soaked. Some spray will get into the medium, too. That's good. I repeat the spraying 4-5 times, 2 days apart. |
Ultra Pure Oil....our local orchid grower, Orchidaceae, swears by it. Not as toxic as Neem.

I have had great luck with Garden Safe Fungicide 3 it works great. I controls all types of critters. Do you see the white spots in water floating and jumping on top of the water? You can find it in all stores. Pam

All plants need light to grow, even those marked as "Low Light." There is no plant that will thrive in a dark corner or hallway. If you want to keep plants in places such as this, you'll have to rotate them regularly to a well-lit spot for at least a week at a time and then back to where you want them. It may be more convenient to buy artificial plants for such areas instead.
