Are there any blue paphs?

I love blue color, it's my favorite, I would love to have a blue paph in my collection if there exists one. I've never seen blue paphs out there, so it looks like they are very rare:( Do they exist at all? And I mean blue, light blue, no purple or red reflections like purple or blue. Guys, help me find one out there! Maybe someone already has this beauty?

smartie2000 04-02-2007 10:57 PM

well there is a purple phrag called phrag kovachii. There's no such thing as a blue orchid, but rather violet;)

Pupka 04-02-2007 11:01 PM

Here, they say there are no red or blue paphs...:(

Orchid: Paphiopedilum

I dreamed about one that is of the similar color, like a vanda on this pic::idea:

How about vanda on the pic above? It looks like blue indeed, though I've never seen a blue vanda personally, only on photos. But it's very true blue!

smartie2000 04-02-2007 11:06 PM

Phrag kovachii isn't exactly that shade either...
I've heard of someone who dreamed of a blue slipper and ended up dying in the hunt for it in the rainforest

Pupka 04-03-2007 09:51 AM

Ha ha, I'm not yet to that, I mean hunting for it in the rain forest. I just wanna find a name of a blue slipper, if there is one, and then buy it from somewhere.

Shadow 04-03-2007 04:15 PM

I don't think the blue slipper exists. We discussed the same question earlier, at the Russian language forum and we didn't find any blue slipper. I wish I had one too. It should be so nice. Too nice to be a reality...

Yeah, I guess you're right, there are no such things as blue slippers, however, having one would be a really nice opportunity.

Did you mean this topic?

Maybe in the future they will have blue Paphs. They just need to work with Kovachii a little. Or manipulate the genes a bit. They were doing some genetic work with some white flowers(I don't recall the name) or something like that, and brought out a blue gene for the normally white flowers.

dave b 04-03-2007 10:14 PM

No blues paphs, nothing even close. I agree with the no blue orchid comment, only bluish shades of purple..

Eric M Muehlbauer 04-03-2007 11:21 PM

The only way to get a true blue paph, or any other orchid, is through genetic engineering. The "true" blue color we hope to find in a flower is usually produced by the chemical delphinidin. Its a very rarely produced pigment in flowers...Delphiniums have it, so does Meconopsis, the Himalayan Blue poppy. No orchid has it. Even blue Vandas, and I have 2, are not "true" blue...just bluish shades of lavender. With paphs, in particular, it would be difficult. Paphs don't even have a true, bright red...even the "reddest" of paphs can't compare to a besseae or one of its phrag hybrids. Definitely plants in the earth-tone range, along with deep purples. Even genetic engineering may not help. I'm currently reading the book Flower Confidential, by Amy Stewart...about the commercial flower industry. Even when the delphinidin gene has been engineered into carnations and roses, the result has been purplish, not a true blue. Take care, Eric

Great information Eric....thanks.

smartie2000 04-04-2007 12:17 AM

Thanks Eric. so there are no true blue orchids;)
Well they did make a dend glow in the dark by genetic engineering...

Yes. It's incredible but you found it! Do you understand Russian?
As you can see there are few photos of almost blue paphs but all of them are results of good work with Photoshop.

Shadow,

I am from Ukraine, too:) But I live in US.

Sorry for off, thank you guys for the information. It's so pity we don't have blue orchids... When my white paph will open I'll color it with acrylic blue paints. Sounds, like an idea, uh?

Eric M Muehlbauer 04-04-2007 08:59 PM

Pupka 04-04-2007 10:00 PM

Ha, ha, Eric, of course you do!!! How's your Russian?! I guess we should open a new topic just for Ukrainians:lol:

Eric M Muehlbauer 04-05-2007 12:10 AM

I know very little Russian, despite hearing it all my life from my mother and grandmother...most of the words I know can't be printed here....and I learned them from my students, not my mother....Take care, Eric

I believe that thelymitras are one of the very few true blue orchids, and even the blue forms are quite rare with them....

Sometimes when you take a picture of the orchids with purple color they can be easily reflected by light in such a way they become like blue. It depends on the angle of light. But still, if they have a purple by nature, why is it so difficult for breeders to make a blue from it?

Tindomul 04-05-2007 04:28 PM

Wow! Gorgeous! I had no idea that those existed.
