Help my Baby it has mold!
3 Attachment(s)
Please! I need help! I love orchids and I gotten orchids as a gift, an onicidum heaven sent. For some reason the leaves are brown-yellow and there is white-puffy-mold growing from the roots and went to my plants. My bulds fell and so have some leaves! I have been reasearching for solutions and I herd about cinnomin spice and hydrogen peroxide... can these two things help my plant kill the mold? should i repot the plant? HELP! :bua: I have picture of how my oni looks like
|
I use rubbing alcohol on mine. I also see some rot developing. For that I would water with a solution of Thiomyl (or Phyton 27 might work as well.) You want a systemic.
|
Thank you so much for replying! Can I save my babies or will it be too late? I have researched that I need to get phyton 27 for them... Should I repot them though?
|
Opps another thing, how do i do the alchol thing do i just pour it like i would with watering my plant or do i just take like and ear pick and rub the infected area?
|
I use an eye dropper for the alcohol. Yes, you should be able to save it.
|
I did the same thing with my Max. It got moldy so i mixed up alcohol and hydrogen peroxide in a sprayer and went to town. Then I sprayed it with Physan 20.
I figured that if that didn't kill the plant, it sure would kill the mold. It took 2 applications plus I put the fans up one speed in the GH and the mold went away. Good luck. |
Does it kill fungus too?
I found out one of my orchids a Blc mem had black at the top of the PB and some leaves fell off. one PB was soft - I pulled it out of the plastic pot and smelled a bit moldy. weird because i have no such problems with others [that are most in hydroton SH] this was in bark from parkside... Once i sprayed alcohol because a mandevilla had aphids and it made the leaves dry and fall off. so i wonder if alcohol may be too strong. so what should i do with the Blc? i washed the roots in water / peroxide / listerine [which is basically diluted alcohol]. or should I use a systemic fungicide? I bought some Daconil spray but it is very dense not a mist. hard to apply. stefano |
Thank you so much
|
actually would peroxide by itself be enough?
|
I had just tryed the alcohol today... How many applications do I put in and how many times a week (incase)? I removed them outside to get fresh air, repot them, and removed all the old leaves and dead-infected parts of my omnici. What i did is that I skurt it on the infected area (black) then I just put in a little bit of water to run it down after a couple a minutes, (do I do that?)
|
I haven't had this problem yet, but what kind of alcohol? Isopropyl? Ethanol? Other?
|
rubbing alcohol ISOPROPYL,
|
Natalia,
I didn't apply any water after the alcohol/peroxide and physan sprayings. I let the fan kind of dry out my Max and then applied again 1 day later. I went back to regular watering 1 week later. (I use semi-hydro) I saw immediate results because the mold did not come back....i.e. no white etc. Good luck. :) FYI- I have used both 70% and 90% Isopropyl rubbing alcohol. I haven't seen any ill effects. |

(** first three images) Another problem i have is that i have a small phal plant my uncle gave me, sick, dried up, i have been wattering it but for some reason no more roots are growing 1)whats happening 2)what can i do 3)can it still survive. (** second six images) |
Hi Natalia. They all look dead to me. But maybe we can help the next one.
Where, how and well anything you can tell us about your method of growing please. 1)What city 2) inside or outside of house 3) sunlight or artificial light 4) How strong is the light, direct or indirect? 5) Watering, how often 6) Are you adding anything else and if you are how much... |

1) Florida
2) inside, heat is too strong outside 3) sunlight 4) indirect sunlight on window, curtians are opened to britien the room, there is also a fan on 5) water, 10-14 days because its in the house 6) I do have fertilizer for my orchids but i only had used it once for when they had flowered. Another issue i have, my best friends bought me an orchid, and it was dried, so i had watered it today on Sunday, 9,2010... how ever the leaves are statring to take me into cuation theses are Phals aswell. |
I live in Miami. The phals I have I grow outside in the shade and they do really well. I water once a week. Sometimes twice depending on rain. I have one on a tree with no media which I water every day.
What I think you may be having a problem is they are stressed plants or their media might need replacing asap when bringing them home from the place of purchase. Your watering sounds good at 10 days if you think it takes that long for them to almost dry up completely. |
Yeah, i want to leave them outside to get fresh air, but im so nervous with the heat. but what do think of the other phals leaves i have images of?
|
I think they are asking for help too but I don't know if they came like that to you? Were they healthy looking when you got it? Did you check the roots and medium when you got them?

well they were better looking then that :( , no leaves were wrinkled and yes i check the media, it looks rather odd, but nothing i thought would take me to caution.(more images)(1st three are the one brownish-yellow leaf)
(2nd four is how the media looks like) i wraped the baby one phal(small, purple looking one) in sphagnum moss and repotted it. hopefully it grows new roots. |
Natalia, I don't know what to say except that I had a Phal that had leaves do that and one by one they died and then the plant died.
It is a sign of waterlogged (overwater) and it might have already started before you got the plant. Mine was my own fault (my first Phal learning experience). Once the leaves peeled off then the crown started to rot and mold. I think your plant was not healthy to begin with. It may have looked healthy up top, but I suspect the roots near the crown are dying from rot. This is exactly what happened to mine. I will have to leave suggestions to the experts because I was unsuccessful in saving mine from this problem. Good luck...and so sorry. :( |
Oh no actually they were dried up hen i got it, so i watered them sunday, they are getting strudy. but yes i dont overwater them in any case. i always ask the bredders if they have watered it fertiziled before i bring it hom. =) but i wont lose hope im saving mines asking questions and everything! =)

Wait patiently and see.

yes, I recently had a phal with crown rot, the whole plant rotted away, but the roots looked good, so I just continued to care for it, and now about 2 months later it has a small basal keiki.
