albino squirrel
This little guy is technically not my pet but I was surprised and delighted to see it eating outside on my deck this morning. So I took a video shot with my digital camera. It is one of the many little guys (birds, squirrels, chipmunks) that stop by to look for munchies at my place each day. Some of you may find it cute or repulsive or even tasty.

Since he's not digging up my cypripediums my vote is 'cute'.

Bonjour Linh!
Very nice squirrel indeed! (as is your photostream on flickr which I admired). Do you grow ALL those orchids and flowering plants? I live in a tropical climate (Phuket Island/Thailand) and get to grown all my orchids outside. I've added you as a friend/contact on flickr, my name there is HARIPUNCHAI, here it is Ephemere and in reality Michael! Cheers from The Land of Smiles! |

Albino squirrel
What a cute critter. I hope he has a long and happy life. One sad thing, however, is that albino animals often do not live long due to the lack of natural camoflage coloring. Their predators can see them too easily. Do enjoy him while you can.
We have seen black squirrels in Huntsville TX and in a town in Michigan (name escapes me). They are really beautiful. We have the little grey (or cat squirrel) and the red (or fox squirrel). Funny, right here at the house there are greys but less than a mile away, on our same street, there are reds. Beverly A. |
Several years ago a neighbour caught an albino chipmuck in a live trap and we kept it as a pet for a few months. It had brown eyes.
Black squirrels are pretty common around here in Western MA, but I've never seen an albino squirrel. I can't tell from the picture, but are the eyes pink? I'm with the "it's cute" contingent  |

albino squirrel
He's probably looking to see just when he will get his next handout.
Years ago, my FIL had one (just a regular red) that all he had to do was stick his head out the back door and call "here Petey" and the the squirrel would come running to take the food out of my FIL's hand. Of course, this was in the city where they are protected. One year the city even asked people to feed them because the acorn crop was bad. A friend had a bag of black walnuts on her porch and a hungry squirrel to match. Critters are so much fun. Beverly A. |
I have plenty of greys whom I try to divert from the bird feeders by giving their own stash of critter food (this ain't too successful by the way). Down in Granbury TX where my late mother lived, there were lots of red squirrels. While playing golf at Granbury CC the squirrels would approach the golf cart looking for handouts - but they were particular, not just any ol' thing would do, it had to be pecans! I remember one round where we were attempting to putt (now I have to tell you that the greens at Granbury CC are about as big as a living room rug!) but we couldn't because the squirrels were standing all over the green between us and the cup. Anyone remember the ruling for moveable obstructions!

There's a big population of melanistic (black) squirrels in DC, too.

This story so sad.....
White squirrel death goes global Abli, Snowy or Percy lived in a churchyard off Dorking High Street Residents in a Surrey town have expressed their amazement at the global response to the death of an albino squirrel in a road accident. The squirrel, known as Albi, Percy or Snowy by different animal lovers in Dorking, was run over in October. A shrine was set up in his honour at St Martin's Churchyard, where he lived, and press and TV covered the story. "It is amazing. We have had e-mails from all over the world," said Rick Parish, chamber of commerce president. The squirrel had lived in the churchyard off Dorking High Street for five years and was a favourite with local children and wildlife lovers. Squirrel offered In the United States, Fox News covered Albi's death, with anchorman Shepard Smith describing the "recent tragedy in the small town of Dorking, England". "The Chamber of Commerce in Olney, Illinois offered to ship a squirrel across to us," said Mr Parish. "Apparently they have 200 albino squirrels living there." A pub in Dorking has been selling squirrel memorial shopping bags and mugs and councillors have discussed erecting a statue. Mr Parish said the town already had a cockerel as an emblem. "Now it sounds as though we could end up with a white squirrel instead," he said. "It is a fantastic bit of fun and has really pulled everybody together. "It has taken everybody by surprise how much Albi caught everyone's imagination." |

This is my little friend. I call her Cristabel She has an injured right paw. Lives in a huge photenia next to the house. Comes when she hears the bells jingle. I love her.
The other day she thought my finger was a peanut. She would not let go. I had to bite my tung so I would not scream. She did not know. My Fault. Lori:biggrin: |
The eyes don't look pink, so it may not be a true albino.
In the area around Brevard, NC, there is a population of white squirrels. They don't interbreed with the "normal" squirrels. As for tasty, well, a lot of people prefer white meat! |
Awww cute!

cute!! i want one! :P

Wow, I completely forgot about this thread of mine. Thanks to everyone for sharing their squirrely comments and cute squirrel stories!
