Not AGAIN!!!!!
Yesterday began as a nice, quiet one. The wife and younger residents were out and about, so I had the house to myself. Spent time watering orchids, then sat on the sofa with a glass of limeade to choose between television and a nap. The nap was about to win when the phone rang. It was, of course, Juli. "I'm at PetSmart. I found the cutest little dog, a lab mix. He only has three legs!" Uh oh. Poor little baby was run over by a car. Three of his legs were broken but two healed while the third had to be amputated. He also had broken ribs and a few other injuries.
So I drove to PetSmart. I figured I might have a chance, still. But there was Juli, already with the puppy on a leash and playing. Thinking perhaps I had one last out, I asked the adoption people about the puppy. They said he had some agression issues with other dogs because of how a female pit treated him in a foster home. "Well, go get Sully," Juli said. Sully, you may remember, came to live with me in October as a birthday present to myself, and had his own agression issues for me to work through. Well, Sully and I walked up to Juli and the puppy when I got back, and the puppy immediately snarled and bared his teeth. Sully looked at him like he wanted to laugh, then lay down on the grass. And then the two were playing and rolling around. And I knew I was defeated. When we got the puppy (he came with the name Daniel) home he and Sully played and played and played, until both were too tired to move any more. And last night he slept on the bed, basically wrapped around my head. Gets around pretty well for a three-legged dog! Oh, so now we have six dogs. Here's Daniel (isn't he a cute thing!), and also Daniel with Sully: http://www.orchidboard.com/community...mbs/pals11.JPG http://www.orchidboard.com/community...mbs/pals10.JPG http://www.orchidboard.com/community...umbs/pals9.JPG http://www.orchidboard.com/community...umbs/pals1.JPG |

Cutie pies! What a lucky little feller to get a great new home and family. Nice pics!
|
He's just soooo cute!!!

Daniel is very fortunate to have overcome his injuries and to have found a happy home with you and your brood. He and Sully are both adorable. You did good!
|
Woow, you are amazing! I'm so happy you gave Daniel a permanent home! A friend has a bunch of Greyhounds (rescues from the racing tracks) and 2 of them are three legged. They are as fast as their 4 legged pack members and deal very well with their handicap.
I wish you and your pack a long and happy time together! Nicole |
John, bless you and your wonderful wife Juli...and Sully...and ...and...and...well, you get the point ;)
Anybody who has such a huge heart with animals is tops in my book :cheer: |
How could you ever turn down those puppy eyes!? What a cutie.

What a sweetheart!!! Looks like he fits right in! He is so lucky that your wife found him!! Congrats on the new baby!

Sure looks like he has made himself at home. He is such a lucky pup.
Kudos to you two.... It takes special folks to do what you have done. Sheridan |
This puppy just amazes me. The adoption center warned us that he is agressive toward other dogs because of a dog in his former foster home which was mean to him. To check him I went and got Sully, who came from the same center and is BIG, rough, and came with a similar reputation for agression. (Sully, by the way, is Mr. Mellow now that he and I have worked together on his issues.) Within minutes the two dogs were playing, and have quickly developed a wonderful friendship.
But what really amazes me about Daniel is his spirit. When the car ran him over, I've been told, the driver intentionally hit him. In fact, swerved toward him. He was laid up for months. Three legs were broken, along with some ribs and internal injuries. Daniel, though, decided to recover. He's got a lot of the puppy-age uncoordination still in him, and that adds into his trouble learning to walk, run, and play with only one front leg. But when he falls, he springs right back up and keeps going. There is a joy, both on his face and in his soul, that is rare! Already, I can't imagine how we managed with just five dogs. Each brings a gift to our home. Daniel's gift, though, is strongest - it's going to be pretty hard to have a reason to feel sorry for myself about anything when I watch this bundle of happiness and energy totter along on three legs! |

I'm not sure if those are more tears of joy and admiration or tears of sadness because I can't get my hands around the neck of the idiot in the car. Please keep us updated on Daniel's progress. I'm sure with all the love he's surrounded with, he'll be teaching the old dogs some new tricks ;) :bowing |
You and Your family are very special people to open your home and hearts to the unwanted ..Wish there were more people like that .. :) Gin

What a sad story about Daniel's life. Why would people intentionally steer towards a dog! I can't believe how rude people can be. :( Nicole |
It's so sad to hear that someone could intentionally do that.
It's so good that there are people like you to counter it and take in animals who have been treated so badly. |
This puppy is a riot! I got home yesterday, and was at once pleased to see that there were no, uh, messes to clean up. Also, nothing had been chewed up, torn apart, or otherwise destroyed. Well, so I thought....
And then I got to my bedroom. The cover and top sheet had been pulled back off of the bed. The remains of a rubber dog toy, chewed into extremely small fragments, were strewn all across the sheets! So I changed the sheets, remade the bed, and all was good. Naturally, as I was leaving the house this morning, there sat Daniel, atop the bed and with a couple of toys at the ready! |

What a great story jk!! Fantastic that you rescued him, shame about his injuries but he looks like he is gonna be just fine. Animals sure are resilient aren't they? My parents recently adopted a five year old cat that had been seized from a puppy farm, poor thing was 5 years old and had never done anything but live in a small cage. But two months later in a happy home and you would never be able to guess where he came from! Once again, great story!!!

I agree, K. Animals have a much stronger will than people, I think. They could live on love alone (though sure like food).
