Equitant award

This little guy was awarded this weekend. HCC/AOS. I posted a different picture last week or so, and decided to take it to judging Saturday.

Waiting for Orchidom to give me a name for the grex, it is Rdcm. (Orchidom Red Love x Aleka) 'Littlefrog Sweet Caroline'.

Rob, that's stunning! I need one of those!!!
Congrats to you on the award!

littlefrog 02-19-2007 11:44 AM

Well, I've got lots and I think I'll order more...

It may be because they do well for me, but I think equitant oncidiums are some of the most rewarding plants I own. They grow well, stay pretty small, and bloom like weeds. I'd trade virtually all my other oncidium hybrids for equitants in a heartbeat.

I'm going to your site right now...one of these babies has my name on it! :cheer:
Thanks, Rob :)

Rob, I don't see this particular one on the site...am I looking in the wrong place? :scratchhead:

Ross 02-19-2007 12:16 PM

Rob, would you hold one of those for me? I'll come down and pick it up in April.

littlefrog 02-19-2007 12:21 PM

I only have the one really nice one, and I'm not ready to divide it. But I probably have several of the same cross, if that is good enough. They are quite variable.

On the website I just have listed 'growers choice'. I have about 10 different hybrids and it was easier that way. But if you wanted a specific cross, you could just make a note of it.

Actually I've never bloomed an equitant that wasn't worth having...

How about I come down to Lansing in April after my Florida trip and we'll discuss? I'd really like to phase over to smaller plants and I REALLY like that Red!

Congratulations Rob ...
That is one flat flower! How many flowers, buds per inflorescence? Measurements? Obviously, I'm eager to read the award description.

Hi Rob :)
It's the bold red of this bloom that blows me away! Do you have any others of this color?

You know, I don't think I ever got the award sheet for it. Hmm... I didn't measure it, so I don't know. Two spikes, both about equivalent, so you could count the flowers and buds in the picture and double it.

I've never seen anything quite this color (and without markings) before in equitants (that I own or at shows). So I think it is definitely special. Its sibling has even more intense red/maroon color, but the form isn't as nice and it has a yellow mask. I'm considering a sib cross, it would be so cool to bloom out a couple hundred of the sib cross to see if I could get the color of the sib on the form of the awarded one.

I'll try to make a division but I don't know that I'll be able to sell any for a while. I think they will be busy procreating... Fortunately these things grow fast. I guess they can be mericloned, but I still haven't found anybody to do that for me.

cneos 02-20-2007 10:12 AM

I'm guessing it's 8/7/1 with 3.5 cm x 4.5 cm ns. Any idea what grex will be? The color is really vibrant on 'Littlefrog Sweet Caroline' - are others of the same cross far off (color)?

Whenever they're available...I'll take one! :cheer:

Rob you have out done yourself, please send a bit of your orchid thumb this way...great color, and for show, nothing bets yours...nice job.

littlefrog 02-20-2007 10:40 AM

Well, here is this plant and one if its sibs.

http://www.orchidboard.com/community...oncidiums.html

The cross has been widely variable, as are most equitant crosses... I think most have been red with markings (yellow usually). Form on most hasn't been spectacular but the colors are nice.

Waiting for the hybridizer to give me a name. And they are out of the cross, it looks like. I was going to order more...

Congratulations Rob, it's a striking flower! Do you know what the score was? My guess is that it needed a few more flowers to get a higher award.

76 points? If I'd been scoring it, I'd have come in around 79-81pts, I think.

Beautiful Rob. Nicely photographed too. That color is fantastic, so vibrant.
